An Urgent Decision On A Job Offer by Anonymous1900: 11:33pm On Jul 29, 2015
Hello Everyone

Let me start by saying this is not an opportunity to judge or criticize my decisions or lack of it there of. I would also try to be as open and forthcoming as possible regarding all information to help you offer any opinions either from personal experience of inferred ideas.

I already have a direction am inclined to lean towards but its not set in stone and am very much open to ideas from others (I actually welcome it as i like to be thorough and get all the information i can have before making decisions)

I was recently offered a position in Nigeria due to start in a month at the latest however i am currently rounding off a research program in the united states (6 months to finish). The prospective employer will not defer the position till i finish in 6 months time. I had interviews with the vice president of the company when i was in Nigeria last year and a couple of other interviews but i guess due to the instability of the economy (elections and all), the offer never materialized till now. i consider the offer a place to start and while I cant be specific about the exact figure here, its upwards of 250k/month after Tax.

Before you make your decisions based on the offer or my current academic situation, here is a little about me. I have a BSc (Nigeria), MSc (Uk) and MEng (USA).... All in engineering (so i wont consider the figure impressive however its not an entry position and that is my basic pay so there are other benefits). i have paid work experience in the Uk and US and took up an unpaid work experience in an Oil & gas servicing company in Nigeria for about 6 months. needless to say i am well educated but without enough experience in my chosen field and this offer hopes to fill that void.

if you also want to ask why am i not eager to come back to Nigeria? the economy seems fairly unstable now, Iran deal is sure to devastate the oil sector further and destabilize the Nigerian economy even more for those that understand the vicissitudes of the Iran deal. I do have access to getting residency papers in the USA which will coincide with the time i finish my research or a few months after without doing anything shady or sinister (most of my family are here anyway). I am also fully aware that with or without papers, jobs are not automatic any where but you will agree with me that its a little easier abroad than in Nigeria. a good example is the current offer i am considering where i still needed an introduction to setup the interviews and even though i did all the grunt work, i wont have even gotten in the door without knowing someone. The company as a matter of policy does not even advertise positions.

A little about the company: international company with huge investment portfolio in the millions of dollars, where its based should not be important but its on the island. cant reveal more than that about the company.

please let me know what you think or what you would do in my shoes. Also i would be happy to answer any questions that help you offer better advise provided its something i can reveal

Thanks in advance

You don't really have a problem. Your heart already favours one of the options. Just toss a coin. while it is in the air, you will find that you are unknowingly hoping for a particular outcome

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't return to Nigeria since I have a legit means of getting my residency papers.. Have you tried searching for work over there? At least you have some international work experience/education. .. Or getting a job over there seems harder?

Except you have other ties here in Nigeria, I see no reason for your return. . To me, the job alone isn't worth it.... People with jobs that pay way more than what you just mentioned scramble for Canada skilled immigration programme and Us visa lottery when it was still on...

Also, our present economic situation seems to be getting worse.. how much is $1 in Nigeria? ... With average earnings in the US, your money turns to millions of Naira..... We keep hoping things get better though. ..

The decision is yours, all the best....

Well based on what you said, your experience and education background. You think the offer is little. The truth is this,in Nigeria most companies pay based on local content policies. Do you wish to really come back to settle in Nigeria? The economy will some day get better.....unless you have your fears and de comparism between naira and dollar. What extent of tax do you pay over there?Do you think there are better chances there. To me if you are still single come back and take it up. You mentioned future prospects. Seriously a good paying job like that is not a bad start. No matter how many years you live abroad, one day you must come back.
Finally choose based on your priorities....Thank you

Thanks for your input. I am working in some capacity but once am done with my present program in 6 months, i would be seeking other employment unless i chose to stay back with the research (which is a no no).

Getting a job everywhere is hard and by no means automatic. several of my friends and people i know just recently lost jobs and this are people with considerable experience over here. The good news is they are able to find something else within a few weeks or months but not the same for people relatively new.

I do have ties in Nigeria (a fiancee) but that does not affect my decision hugely ( plans were already in motion and almost concluded to relocate her over here before the offer came in).

Yes the economy is a real concern...

Yes i do have a strong desire to come back and settle down in nigeria if the opportunity presents itself however i also have STRONG fears about what direction we are heading with the economy. I have lived in several countries and trust me when i say its not the same thing... dont get me wrong about these countries, they have great perks but it just feels like something is missing sometimes......

but thanks again for your input, appreciated

I understand your fears.it is not only you that have such uncertainties. But the truth is that presently things are really bad.the worst thing you will do is to compare naija with those developed contries........it can be mind buggling.I feel you are still reluctant to come pick the job.

So your fear now is the probability of getting a job there in the US?

I think you'll get something in due time.. You should probably start tendering your applications now instead of waiting till your programme ends or their recruitment process doesn't take long?

If you leave the US, your chances of ever getting a residency permit may be slim but if you stay there, you can still return to Nigeria whenever you wish, dual citizenship is cool....if the former is wrong, then I'll say you come back to Nigeria, take up the job, garner experience and leave if you still wish to. ... It will also give you the opportunity of testing the waters and making a more informed decision. ..

But The truth is that our economy isn't encouraging, politicians and other wealthy individuals have their families in more stabilised countries. .

You can even start up a company in Nigeria from the US but I don't know how easy it is starting one in the US from here.... The advantages to me far outweigh the disadvantages. ..

However, you know the kind of person you're, I mean if you so desire staying in Nigeria then do so atleast for your own fulfillment. ...

All those your degrees you stated there don't move employers in Nigeria....most employers. It's experienve and performance they seek.

The Degrees you are getting is to get a good job. But the downside is 250 is low if you have about 2 yrs experience coupled with the degrees.

If you have ur complete papers, better sit down in the Usa. I don't think getting a 250k job should be a problem. Even banks pay that

Good morning,

I advise you to complete your research program, It's obvious your credentials are top notch for you to be offered in absentia but no offer is guaranteed in Nigeria , to your surprise, the job offer might even be distributed amongst many candidates where they do 'first come first serve' and might require an interview, this is Nigeria, ur American accent won't be needed.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Option 1.250,000 a month with other allowance...Option2. To complete a research in US. Complete your research and stay back in US after all the pasture in US is greener ...things are hard down here.. Imagine u have a wife, children, and other who depend on you for support.. That ur 250k was the same amount my neigbour bought a laptop with yesterday.

Op, our ideas will not necessarily make you conclude. I think you already know what you want.

Prioritize, that's all I'd say. You're the one putting on the cap, you know it's size and limit. Be sure of what you want to achieve. Dont just consider the ""Now"" consider the future also.

All the best in every decision you make.

Mere thinking of coming back home now with the prospect in the place you are presently,I will assume the witches in your village are using your picture to fan themselves..

#250k is less than $2000,guy stay there abeg, there are some places better than home..then you retire to Nigeria at old age.
