Hi everybody,

I am new to Nairaland and I think I like what I see and read on this forum.

I would like to know if anybody is knowledgeable about the soap business in Nigeria.

I think I would like to start my own soap company soon but on a small scale and mostly household soap.

I am currently handling a project of this kind and may be able to share some info (which i cannot post on this forum). u may want to google some info on soap-making, that will be a good start. also consider what kind of production u want to achieve - top quality, medium quality or low basic quality; how much do u want to produce and at what rate - daily, weekly or monthly; do u want to start-up in ur home or purchase a production plant; what unique quality will ur soap possess to compete in the market? it is not an easy start-up though, this enterprise; i must warn u. so brace urself and start to research aggressively if u want to develop ur interest. wink

Hi Babyjay,
I make and sell soap as a side gig. I specialize in soap for drier skin types and sensitive skins. I 've been doing this for about 2and half years now.
You can build a successful business doing it from home, you don't need any major investment in equipment,
In europe you have to have certification for your products and so it is important to do your research, I don't know if this is also the case in Nig, but even if not, you want to be careful that what you're selling is safe.
Luckily for you, raw materials/ingredients are at your disposal in Nig so you 'll have one major hurdle crossed.
As eol has suggested, research reseach and some more before you put your soap on the market. The soapdish forum is an excellent resource but be sure to use the search feature before posting queries else you could get flamed! wink

baby Jay. Good that you have this zeal. I have worked on the project before. I still have the research on the diskette. i went as far as possible in getting company that can fabicated needed machine. Talk to Engr. Akinfewa @ techno-Equip. I can really remeber the adress now, but i know it is at Ejigbo or thereabout. There can offer you machine on installmental payment. But I will advise you start from home test running whatever fomula you have for your soap. Also work well on your marketing strategy. If you would mind try seeing the MD of DUDU OSUN at TOPASS Plaza Agidingbi Road, Ikeja. He will be of great help to you cause you will need a mentor to really break through.

Dear Readers,

I have just come across this forum and I know these posts were from last year. I live in Nigeria and operate a company which has the experience to put up soap (toilet soap, laundry soap, hotel soap, etc. ) and detergents (powder and liquid) plants on a Turnkey basis in Nigeria.

If this interests you, you may look at my profile to get my email address to contact me. (I don't think they allow posting of emails within the messages).
Thanks.

Hi, I don't know about soap-making in Nigeria, specifically, but I know that you can get all the supplies that you would need for that business online. A good company that sells soap making supplies can probably give you all the info you need to actually start producing your own soap. This place is great because they even have all sorts of packaging that you can order for selling your finished product. Good Luck!

good inputs from different people with different idea.

Anyway, just as any other business, you can start big or small depending on your available resources and your dream/vision but may I advice you to start small and build it gradually!!!!

Soaps are in different types, shapes and forms i.e. bar soaps and liquid soaps which is further divided based on there uses i.e toilet soap, laundry soap e.t.c which can further go down to specialisation which is based on for example skin types for bathing soap!!!!
Likewise, soap production make use of different formula/ingredient even if two people are producing the same type of soap they can use different formulation for it.

In any case, it is an art that has to be learned!!!!!!!!
Whether you want to do it big or small, you must learn from those who have done it or doing it.

I produce liquid detergent on part-time basis/low basis.
Find attached my production!!!!

Cheers!!!!

Making soap is not the main problem. It's running into a hick-up that's the real problem.

Does anyone know how to dissolve thick solids in a liquid soap production?
Re: Soap-making Business In Nigeria by hannie: 1:51am On May 06, 2011
^ u use the latest type of Natrosol abi?

get a sieve  grin

The reason why you got those colloids was that u sprinkled the Natrosol too fast, next time u sprinkle slowly and be ready to use more Soda ash than usual to build the production wink
Re: Soap-making Business In Nigeria by aowasiu(m): 7:56pm On May 06, 2011
I'll keep that in mind Hannie. And thanks for making jest of me smiley smiley
But, HONESTLY, i've been considering buying a sieve. 'Just haven't had the time to go to market.
It's good to know their technical name. Now i know they are called "colliods" and the cause.
However, i use STPP rather than soda ash. Do you think that might have had a contributing effect on the production.
Re: Soap-making Business In Nigeria by hannie: 12:14am On May 07, 2011
^ Jesus wept!

u have been producing rubbish!

STPP and Soda Ash work for different things and they arent by any means subtitutes to one another!

Soda ash, on its own is supposed to be the builder in ur production process.
