i came across this

How to get the perfect team mate for your startup.

I agree, running a startup is like running a small and effective military unit. At least, that's what many advisers and startup writers say. But that's not entirely true.

In a military unit
Every member of the team knows their part fully well.
Military units operate in a fashion that every member of the team knows 100% what they are supposed to be doing at any particular point in time. They also know and understand the jobs of every other member in the team, such that if they loose a member someone automatically fills his position.

In a Startup team
This is the same with a startup. You must make it clear to every member of your team, every employee, what it is they are supposed to be doing.
As a startup you also need generalists. People that are good in multiple fields. Programmers that are versatile. A good example is a PHP programmer that knows web design, photoshop and android development.
This helps you survive shocks of loosing one or two members in the team. People will always loose faith in your startup and walkout when you least expect it. Fields will open where you need someone who is good in it to work it out. Generalists save startups.

When you grow into a bigger company you can then start recruiting specialists - people that know only one path very well. Eg. User interface design

In a military unit
Every member of the team obeys orders 100%
In a military team, every member of the team obeys others and never ever argues. They report observations and think as a group. Whatever the group agrees is what everyone does. That's why you hear a lot of "yes sir!" in military units. Every man is a robot there.

In a startup team
This is where startups differ a little:
Startups thrive on successful and ground breaking ideas. You will re invent, pivot and improvise several times while looking for the pot of gold. The original idea may not even be useful or successful.
This demand for ideas makes it disastrous for you to employ 'robot' people. You need team members that can stare you in the eye and disagree with your opinion constructively during brain storming sessions.
You need people who can question your actions, build prototypes over night and submit to you in the day. They are very much loyal, but they are not afraid to think outside your box.

You need people who can come up with a different argument. Not arogant, but also not afraid to air their opinions.

Those are the people that will save your startup in terms of generating the right ideas or modifying existing ones. But as long as you give the final order on what direction the company should follow, they fall back in line and work with the rest of the team.
I call them good rebels.

Cor.ky Builders
Yes of course, there are people who are just arrogant and filled with too much pride. People are different. If the person still ends up coming up with amazing ideas, my suggestion is, they should stay. Just learn how to work with such people. What your startup needs is idea engines not measuring the level of pride in people.

Destroyers
There are also destroyers, people who will argue endlessly, aimlessly and in circles. They will scatter the meeting and you would end up not achieving anything. They are bad rebels, my suggestion is, they should go.

You need good rebels in your startup, not 'yes men'.

Thanks, have a nice day.
