My take is: they are!

They've been around before humans appeared on the planet. They've always been around and are still around, although they prefer as much as necessary to remain hidden.

They will become more and more visible in these End times as the world becomes more corrupt and wicked. The entire Enterprise is to get the world ready for the Beast of Apocalypse, the Anti-Christ.
