I'm not trying to hate, but this was how my CV looked years ago. It's good and I landed a job with it. Just be creative in building yours. Focus on what employers want to see and have a professional way of presenting it and you should be fine. I don't believe in that term "CV format". Those who create it are human beings like you. Write yours.

Most employer will give u specifically wt dey want in ur CV wen dey advertise d vacancy .

Visually impressive CV might work in the hands of a recruiter, but most times CVs get screened by an ATS, in which case it's difficult to pick out the needed information.

Adding state of origin makes this a mediocre resume. Who cares about your state of origin except you are talking about a govt job, for which in fact you really do not need a resume to land.

Plus, a glimpse at your Facebook page by an employer could spell your doom, even when a content was only shared, and not originally posted, by you. It is unwise to add a Facebook identification to a resume. Ever heard of LinkedIn? It's more professional

The key to an effective CV is knowing your target audience.

To all those asking people not to put their personal information, note that some organisations REQUIRE such information as a prerequisite for selection.

Most Federal Government organisations recruit by Federal Character. Sometimes, new potential recruits have to be from certain states or regions to be eligible to apply. CBN had a recruitment specifically for Yobe, Zamfara, Bayelsa and one or two other states about two years ago. Don't think that organisations such as these will email you and ask you for your state of origin if you omit this information from your CV.

Same goes for DOB. Heard of age limits for certain job positions? KPMG for instance strictly abides by its '26 and under' recruitment policy for entry level hires.

So beware. Know who, what you're applying to and for, and adjust your CV accordingly

I think I agree with you in some areas. However, I don't understand why it's like that in Nigeria though. Most employment related laws around the world frown against employers discriminating against potential employees on the basis of sex, religion, age etc.

The KPMG you mentioned is a global firm, and would dare not request such info from job applicants in the US or several other countries. That's already a ground for many lawsuits based on laws already in place against such potentially discriminating requests. Nigeria on the other hand may not have employment laws, and workers probably end up being treated however employers wanted.

If we critically look at it, your sex, religion etc should not dictate if you can do the job or not. Your professional experience and how well you perform in your interview sessions should speak for themselves, not necessarily the extras.

I remember me and some associates bidding on a project in Abuja lately. Prior to us coming down for our presentation and demo sessions, we were told we had to completely change our resume to include certain contents like dob, sex, states of origin, local government areas, religion etc. I could relate to that cos I grew up in Nigeria, but my associates couldn't understand what that was about.

Mind you, prior to the new request, after so much research efforts, we thought we came up with the most formidable team against other competitors. Our team included known professionals from the US, Switzerland, New Zealand, India and Pakistan. These are professionals with reputable firms. Ofcourse it sounded weird to my associates when I broke the news and was trying to collect the dates of births, states of origin, etc. They simply said they haven't experienced that before in all other engagements they've been a part of globally.
In this scenario, what exactly would whoever reviews professional experiences be doing with the date of birth, sex, nationality, local government areas, religion, counties etc from folks from the mentioned countries?

Keep in mind, a job application is different from a Resume or CV, on a job application, you fill out your personal info. but on a CV it's very unprofessional. For jobs were you submit a Resume or CV and no job application, a cover page is definitely a must! On a cover page you would include your intentions, personal info. and other things that might distinguish you from the rest of the applicants. We all know some jobs don't follow proper protocol but majority of jobs in Nigeria won't require you to put your religion, age and so on in your Resume.

Believe me, I have worked in recruitment capacities for different organisations. If a government agency is recruiting for certain states or region and your state of origin is not on your CV, then you are disqualified. No one has time to read your cover letter and no one will email you to ask which state you're from. Your CV will be discarded.

Obviously not all organisations require such information. I have gotten a job with a one page CV that listed just my contact details, academic qualifications and work experience and I have also just gotten another with a four page CV listing everything including samples of research I undertook at postgraduate level.

The key still remains this: know your target audience (potential employee) and prepare your CV accordingly.
