The Nigerian political class is gradually embracing social media as a valuable tool to reach out to members of the public.
Social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Goggle + have been used frequently by politicians to keep the public abreast of all their activities.

While some politicians are still reluctant on channeling their energy towards the use of social media, others are actively using it to engage and reach out to their followers, admirers and indeed, Nigerians.

Naij.com has been monitoring the activities of politicians on social media, and now bring to you five of them that are actively using the various mediums frequently and effectively.

Read below:

1. Governor Nasir El Rufai:
Those who know the diminutive governor very well, knows that he has been very active on social media even before he became the governor of Kaduna state. As an opposition leader, he was a thorn in the flesh for the government of the day as his stinging criticisms were frequently countered from various government offices. Expectedly, his tone has now changed, as his focus is now to inform Kaduna citizens and indeed Nigerians on his activities and policies as the state’s chief executive.

2. Senator Bukola Saraki:
The senate president, just like El Rufai, was every active on social media before he became Nigeria’s number three citizen. As a senator and chairman of the senate committee on environment in the 7th senate, Saraki was always updating Nigerians on the activities of the committee, their legislative backing to government policies and his own contributions to the upper chamber during plenary. As the senate present, it is only natural that his social media pages will be more active and indeed they are.

3. Senator Dino Melaye:
He is one of the most popular senators in Nigeria. And his activities on social media helped him to attain popularity among Nigerians. Interestingly, one consistent feature of his social media pages, is the fact that he usually use the mediums to pray for his followers especially on Sundays, bringing him applause and admiration from many Nigerians. Melaye is also very engaging, as his stand on various national discourse are always from an interesting angle.

4. Senator Ben Murray-Bruce:
A very consistent contributor to Nigeria’s political discourse, Bruce has gotten to a point where many of his followers always look forward to his own stand when a major issue comes up in the polity, before they comment on the issue. His thought-provoking ideas and creative suggestions are monitored by many newsrooms in the country, because his views always start a debate among Nigerians. Class!

5. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode:
It will be a political suicide to preside over Nigeria’s mega city and not be active on social media. The governor’s media team is definitely aware of this fact and they have ensured that the governor’s activities are well documented via his social media pages. To show that he is being monitored closely, a recent issue that embarrased the governor’s media team came to light, when his Instagram page handler failed to acknowledge Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo. Trust Lagosians to point out the error, after which it was rectified.

Worthy Mentions

1. Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila (Majority Leader, House of Representatives)

2. President Muhammadu Buhari

3. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo

4. Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state

It takes a lot of guts to own an account on twitter if you are a politician. Those guys dey vex.

The scrutiny and abuses can be overwhelming for some folks. You 'll be surprised you 'll just make an innocent comment and someone will come out to tell you the story of your life.

Especially those guys that have built self-contain, bungalows, three bedroom flats and even estates on twitter. Those guys live on twitter streets.

I think the OP should also have mentioned Fayose,Atiku, muazu and maybe dele momodu, if you regard him as a politician

Among them, it seems like it's basically El-Rufai who updates his social media profiles personally, the rest uses a P.A or SA

This public figure that are active on social media as soon as they say what they are not supposed to say they will call on their spokesman and say that the account is not genuine or it is hacked instead of leaving communication to the commissioner/minister of information or their spokesman.
