10 Genres Of Music And Their Favorite Fans by funmo(m): 7:46pm On Sep 20, 2015
Music is life!!! And with countless genres of music available to fans, chances are that a single individual loves many genres at a time. But one will always be his most-favourite genre. Mine being hip-hop/rap. However, I listen religiously to almost all genres, including Kwaito, Hiplife, and Mosquito-tunes. With more than 2 decades of being a self-certified musicologist, I came to discover a genre of music is often associated to a particular people. And here are they:

AFRO POP

This is the most populous genre in Nigeria at the moment. The Remedies and Plantashun boys helped established it, and the typical Nigerian teenager/youth is a fan and avid lover of Afro pop. That's why 8 out of 10 randomly chosen phones/music playing gadget of a 10-35 year-old Nigerian will have a WizKid, Flavour, Davido, Psquare or Olamide on it. It's the most money-making genre also.

R N B

Rhythm and Blues! Slow, witty, romantic and melodic... that's how they go. It is beginning to experience a dearth and death in Nigeria. Someone recently heartbroken or newly in love or wedded is the typical R n B fan. Those smooth lyrics are just Aphrodisiacs for them. Love is a beautiful thing mehn!

RAP/HIP-HOP

Hey yo 1, 2, 1, 2 mic check.... hip-hop purists and heads are intelligentsia. Fans of hardcore/undiluted rap have great I.Q. Because rap lyrics (not these watered-down ones mainstream rappers have o o) aren't straight forward to decipher most of the times by just anybody. Punchlines, Puns, Metaphors and even the syncopated bounce type of flow require in-depth and great deal of knowledge to comprehend. Rap aka Hip-hop is solely for the wise. Not just anybody can fall in love with this rhythmically applied poetry of a genre.

GOSPEL

I really don't see Gospel as a genre of music. Being that all other genres can be tagged Gospel provided the lyrics reflect it. However, true Gospel music is rare these days, but the few ones with the calling and anointing to minister through music have their fans in the faithfuls.

REGGAE

Boom! Yah Mon! Bad mon ayard and ina ah farring! Yes I! With roots in Jamaica, Patois is the official language of reggae music. Reggae fans all around the world could be noticed for their dreadlocks, rastafari beliefs, weeds, or just purely a sense of consciousness in them. Dancehall or roots reggae, all reggae fans love Robert Nesta Marley.

"After the reggae play the blues... even your beau e get beau..."

HIGH LIFE

Ghana highlife or Nigerian highlife? This genre is mostly appreciated by the Eastern folks in Nigeria. Most especially those that love hearing their names being sung in praises by the musicians. Safe to say highlife is strictly for the rich and affluent.

WAKA/FUJI/SENWELE/APALA/JUJU

Area!!! Fuji, Waka, Senwele, Apala and Juju are old Yoruba varieties of music. The last 4 are major for old folks, while Fuji, which was birthed from the fusion of these other genres, is for the young and restless street folks. Simply put, the genres are for the groovy Yoruba people. I was gonna say Fuji is for area boys, but I love the genre too.

JAZZ

This could be boring to majority of the people, especially if it's the traditional type of jazz. Jazz is for the gentle and calm folks who just want to relax. It's the opposite of those Yoruba genres mentioned above. A fuji lover can never love jazz, and vice versa. A juju lover may be an avid lover of jazz though, since both have same meaning in pidgin.

ROCK

Rock music is for wrestlers and violent people! That's all!

AFRO BEATS

Arararara! Ororororo! This sound of conscious music still reminds us all of its pioneer and Creator/Originator. Ardent lovers who frequently frequent the shrine on Fridays nights are definitely people that can "shewere, shewere, shewere, shewere, shewere" till the following morning.

At the end of the day, so many factors influence our taste of music. But one thing remains, Music is life!!!
