Aguiyi Ironsi Never ever cancelled the regional system. What he did was to unify the civil service in all region under the millitary command to maintain order after the nzeogwu led coup

Do you know who actually destroyed the regional system? It was GOWAN. Yes Gowan did it. He dissolved the regional system during the civil war and began to create useless states and lgs.

The only mistake Ironsi made was not arresting nzeogwu because that made it look like a planned Igbo coup even though the real counter-coup was also done by Igbo generals.

Before the coup, regional govts were not reporting the the central Federal Govt and Mr Ironsi by fiat said, going forward all regional heads must report to me.

That singular acts abolishes regionalism and instils unitarism, which is the whole language of the military.

By extension, Mr Ironsi an Igbo man abolished our thriving regionalism and introduced unitarism. Gowon merely up-scaled what Ironsi introduced.

Be that as it may, regionalism still remains our best bet for this country and a faster route to actualisation of secession dream.

Take away your tribalism for once and put yourself in Ironsi shoes. He governed the country in a chaotic period the only way that made sense to him which was using the military command structure. What would you have done differently if you were the highest ranking military officer. In fact one of his closest friend at that time was Danjuma who later killed him in the fake counter coup. If it was Igbo coup, he would have made sure all his associates where all Igbo. The second highest ranking officer at that time was a Yoruba man. I forgot his name but that was the man ojukwu told Gowan to step down for. But Gowan refused. Mind you in Thailand, the military takes over periodically whenever the civilian government becomes chaotic and restores civil rule onces things get sorted out. No civilian population gets massacred.

Dundee, what's the use of region when it's not practising federalism and had the head of state foisting leaders on them? Do you know the creation of states doesn't stop the states from practising true federalism if allowed?
Let me ask you, What business do the goat, Ojukwu have with governing the north under Ironsi regime, especially after the same ibo killed their sarduna?
As a matter of fact, the creation of state is the best thing to ever happen to Nigeria in the sense that it prevented ibo thieves from claiming peoples' land and region!

1. Maintain civilian rule at regional level

2. Speedily prosecute the coup plotters.

3. Institute a clear cut road map back to democracy

Things would have been totally different because everybody would have been placated one way or the other.

The Thai military that takes over regularly do not kill the leaders of other regions and protect the people that are of ther own ethnicity. It makes it easy for the citizens to accept the govt fully in the interim, pending when power shall be returned back to the civilians.

The government of the Federation of Nigeria having ceased to function, the Nigerian Armed Forces have been invited to form an Interim Military Government for the purposes of maintaining law and order, and of maintaining essential services.
This invitation has been accepted, and I, General J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi, the General Officer
Commanding the Nigerian Army, have been formally invested with authority as Head of the Federation Military Government, and Supreme Commander of the Nigerian Armed
Forces.

SUSPENSION OF CERTAIN PARTS OF THE CONSTITUTION

The Federation Military Government hereby decrees:

a. the suspension of the provisions of the Constitution of the Federation relating to the office of President, the establishment of Parliament, and of the office of Prime Minister;

b. the suspension of the provisions of the Constitutions of the Regions relating to the establishment of the offices of Regional Governors, Regional Premiers and Executive Councils, and Regional
Legislatures.

APPOINTMENT OF REGIONAL MILITARY GOVERNORS

b. that all holders of appointments in the Civil Service of the Federation and of the Regions shall continue to hold their appointments and to carry out their duties in the normal way, and that similarly the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Special Constabulary shall continue to exercise their functions in the normal way;

c. that all Local Government Police Forces and Native Authority Police Forces shall be placed under the overall command of the Inspector-General.

INTERNAL AFFAIRS POLICY

The Federation Military Government announces, in connection with the internal affairs of the Federation:

a. that it is determined to suppress the current disorder in the Western Region and in the Tiv area of the Northern Region;

b. that it will declare Martial Law in any area of the Federation in which disturbances continue;

c. that it is its intention to maintain law and order in the Federation until such time as a new Constitution for the Federation, prepared in accordance with the wishes of the people, is brought into
being.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS POLICY

The Federation Military Government announces, in connection with the external affairs of the country:

a. that it is desirous of maintaining the existing diplomatic relations with other States; and
