A Deputy Director in the Procurement Department of Ministry of Defence, K.K. Crubio, is one of the parents whose sons lost their lives in a bid to secure admission into the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, on Monday.

Three of the intending cadets, Daily Independent gathered, died on Monday while taking part in the 3.3-kilometre race made mandatory by the selection board as part of requisite for admission into the prestigious military school.

The incident is reminiscent of hundreds who lost their lives during the 10-kilometre jogging exercise conducted as part of requisite for recruitment into the Nigerian Custom and the Nigeria Prison Service late last year.

The incident drew public ire, prompting the National Assembly to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The dead, it was learnt, were part of the over 1,000 candidates who, having passed the written examination conducted in March this year, were invited for the mandatory physical exercise which must be passed before admission is considered fully secured into the school.

Rules and regulations guiding admission into the school, makes it compulsory for all intending students to present certified medical certificate of fitness before being allowed to take part in the exercise. The deceased too, it was learnt, presented certificates obtained from different government-owned hospitals.

It was gathered that the casualties were recorded among the first batch who took to the road early in the morning as sources disclosed that about 10 of those who collapsed as the race was drawing to a close.

is it poverty or miseducation ?

I remembered the day i went for Gulder Ultimate Search 3 selection in Union Bank sport complex, Surulere Lagos. We were made to run an unending race. It was not that easy. . . . .many people collapsed on the way. Though I ran till we were made to stop but i could not catch a breath until after 5 minutes or thereabout. May the guys RIP.

I doubt they were in the best physical condition before they started the race, and to think a hospital had given them a clean bill of health.

They are training to become soldiers; a profession that demands the best physical state. Its only logical that the circumstances they will face when (if) they eventually assume duty be equivalent to the rigors they are made to undertake during the traing process.

I'm not an expert on the Nigerian armed forces, but if the evidence on display is to be considered - where officers parade massive pot bellies with the suspicion that many join for possible future political opportunities (though I hear the army is now more "professional", then this exercise may have been the most exerting physical hurdle they were likely to ever face.

Sad news though.

It's all a big shame. Many of these applicants were not obviously fit, but why didn't government provide and expect this type of emergency
Did they have a medical team on stand-bye?
Were there ambulances?
What about adequate preparation?
Somebody at this institution should definitely be punished so that next year year we'll not be told that 10 died trying to gain admission to NDA.

I personally do 3.5 Miles which is 5.6 Kilometers almost on weekly basis.
I even think the 10 km should be for the soldiers.

Everything is upside down in Nigeria.

Anyone who is not physically fit ( and I don't mean on paper by doctors office , I mean really practically fit) should never go for such recruitment exercises.

We mustn't all be soldiers.

It is the training or punishment that killed them, not any running. Some of the things that are done there are just barbaric and need modernising.

Some of the best Biafran soldiers ( as I heard) were women, and I doubt they were ever subjected to such "training or punishment".

I suspect they were possibly dehydrated and did not get treatment immediately. 10Km is not impossible to run for anyone. I do about 3 times of that each week, sometimes on an empty stomach . . . the key is to make sure to hydrate as much as possible.
