Learn Igbo (or Yoruba) by Mercie88: 3:10am On May 13, 2009
Hey everyone,

I wanted to post about learning Igbo. As most know there aren't many places to take an Igbo class in the US.  sad Some colleges have them like Penn (Uni. of Penn), Boston U, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, Cal. State-LA, and Yale (sometimes). Outside of those schools the class is very rare or non-existent. So, I wanted to give everyone a head's up about SCALI/FLAS program. It's basically an intensive language class offered over the summer that offers many other languages.

There are two University-run Igbo classes this summer: UCLA and MSU. Ucla site is http://www.international.ucla.edu/languages/news/article.asp?parentid=97643

You can pay for the class or get a fellowship. Fellowships to MSU are for graduate students only.Sorry. The first round of fellowships have already been given out, but Michigan State Uni (they're hosting) still has some more to give -- ask me how I know grin Anyway, check out their site: http://africa.msu.edu/scali/index.php

Also, UCLA is offering an Igbo class this summer. Undergrads can use their summer aid packages to pay for it so it's a good deal! But, they might cancel it b/c registration is low. If we want our languages taught, we have to show it!

If you decide to take the class either at UCLA or MSU be sure to call/email (http://africa.msu.edu/scali/interest.php) them and tell them of your intent first or they'll cancel the course (b/c they think they won't have enough students etc.)

Happy learning.  smiley

***MSU is also teaching Intro. Yoruba.

Please, if anyone knows of any other Igbo classes this summer or fall, post them. Thanks!
