We are a country where the highest educational attainment is synonymous with a good grasp of English. There seems to be conflict of whether traditional languages are sidelined for English and it's still seen as a foreign language besides that. However, all over the world, many are making effort to introduce English into their schools and institutions, English is seen as an 'international' language of business in short. So should English speaking Africans be proud of having the English language and maintain its use, regardless of the situation of indigenous languages?

English is the language enforced on Nigeria's people through slavery of the white man, there is no pride in losing your native tongue because the slave masters enforced it on you regardless of economic or international reasons, english can always be a second language. Nigerians have many interesting languages, look at Somalia and Ethiopia, no slave master managed to enforce his language on us

Well Arabic is an official language of Somalia, plus the Islam, and some Ethiopians might argue that Amharic is an imperialist language. Besides that point, people in Africa should have gotten past that point about seeing English as a 'forced' language and starting to use its advantages. Many countries around the world like China and Japan are trying to get their citizens to learn English, some countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are former British colonies but use English to their advantage now, regardless of the fact that the main language is Chinese. If you go back further enough, enough of culture was probably introduced to various people through imperialistic of enslaving methods, including some major world religions, or a better example of Latin in the UK which enriched the language.

Not really, in Somalia the first language is Somali the 2nd language is Arabic. like I said earlier, there is no problem in having english as a 2nd language since its the international language of business. In Somalia Arabic is the 2nd language because of religious and cultural reasons, but european languages had been forced on African populations.

you can use it as an advantage in this age, but your first language must be your native language. Not the one forced on populations. Am sure that in Hong Kong people in general speak Chinese, English is secondary for business.

In terms of ethiopia wether they use Amharic or not its up to them to resolve that thinking between their tribes, the point is their language originates from within Ethiopia's borders and wasn't forced on the populations by foreign invaders.

This incorrect, go to somalia or to any somali 90% don't even speak Arabic, they know couple of phrases here and there and thats it.

Somalia made Arabic the second official language for pretend in 11970 , since we joined the arab league for political & economic reasons.

Just like we adopted Communist, marxist ideologies for pretend so we could draw support and ally with the Soviet and China.
