I have keenly observed that the world is a place of achievement. A place where people are at liberty to showcase their innate abilities. Each individual is left with the choice of whether to be an achiever or to remain seated in the crowd as a spectator. There is also the option of whether to achieve to a certain limit and become comfortable in life or to be an extra ordinary achiever and stand out from fellow achievers. To belong to the crowd/masses requires no risk whatsoever, but to be an ordinary achiever calls for some level of risks. To choose to be an extra ordinary achiever entails that you must be up against daunting odds of different shapes and sizes. However, some people have decided to leave their options open, hoping to make up their minds at their own sweet time. These groups of people keep procrastinating until it is too late to do anything. That is why it is advisable to strike while the iron is hot.
From research and inferences, 95% of the world’s population represents the masses, 4% are the comfortable, while only 1% represents the extra ordinary achievers. This infinitesimal percentage of people in this 1% category will never be held down until every unused capacity has been marshaled for service. You and I are essentially infinite choice makers. We should understand that the right to choose our own path is a sacred privilege. We must use it. It is the power of choice and the exercise of choice that make us humans. According to Thomas Jefferson, ‘’without the power of choice, a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing’’. Whether you decide to be in the crowd, an achiever or an extraordinaire, your own choice is your glory. If you desire to stand out as an achiever and you are afraid to be skating on thin ice, you are not pushing hard on the objectives. Great achievers are willing to through anything. Temporary pains or discomfort mean nothing to them as long as they can see that the experience will take them to a new level. They are interested in the unknown and the only path to the unknown is through breaking barriers, an often painful process. Have you ever bothered to imagine how this world would have been if no one has the courage to do anything ---- off course, very bitter and dull. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conquest of it. Achievers bring excitement to the world. In Nigeria today, there is an ambiance of peace, joy and unity. This homely atmosphere would not have been possible if we had all sat down in our comfort zones, waiting for fate to bring it to pass.
Out of about 170 million people in Nigeria, one man with courage, determination and sagacity stood up to make the difference. Nigeria has produced great men and women who have achieved more than a lot in their different ways and styles. The great and the good that have walked the surface of this country with outstanding achievements. Today, we have this super weight with peerless performances under his belt. He is a fearless crusader, a veteran politician who has greatly endeared himself to his people of the South West and Nigerians in general. He is a man so full of the milk of human kindness, a broad minded, selfless and intelligent leader, always on the move to break fresh grounds. He is a hero who has the interest and love of Nigeria and Nigerians at heart. He is the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. This rare icon doesn’t go where the path may lead, rather he goes to where there is no path and leaves a trail. When you are telling him, ‘’the sky is the limit’’, he is showing you footprints on the moon. He said ‘’no’’ to status quo and eventually brought home the bacon. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was the only one who understood the philosophy that we are not here to accept a fate imposed upon us; rather, we are here to create our fate. He has created a new and prosperous fate for Nigeria. Without mincing words, he told the former incumbent President that he would unseat him and PDP Government apologists thought he was adumbrating the impossible. The people at the point of power dismissed the statement as ‘’castles in the air’’, even when it was crystal clear that the country under their watch had gone downhill. They based their argument on the power of incumbency in Africa. Question is, ‘’why is it that this man prospers in everything he lays his hand?
Since the exit of the great Awolowo, the Yoruba race had been searching for the great Awo’s replacement. Leaders have been coming and going but none was nobly qualified to wear the big man’s shoes. What made the condition so difficult is the old saying that a prophet is not honoured in his own land. The Yoruba race has produced great men and women who were recognized outside Yoruba land, but they were not accepted at home. A leader who is accepted by his people must have exceptional qualities that speak for him. Incidentally, the late sage who set this record died in May 9, 1987. As a matter of fact, this shoe had been on ice for 28 years and the unseemingly unending lacuna was giving the race a course for concern. Nevertheless, there is always an end.
The Lagaban of Borgu Kingdom, the Asiwaju of Lagos, Ahmed Bola Tinubu has given the Yorubas something to be proud of. He did not only match the record, he set a higher one. A new record in the political landscape of Africa. An incumbent President was dethroned by his Common Sense Revolution. The great Awo will be rejoicing in the grave, that one of his sons is not only qualified to step into his shoes, but he has brought home new shoes more magnificent and resounding. This rare icon is not only accepted by his people, but also has millions of followers in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s uncommon greatness started sending clear signals during his school days in both Richard Daley College, Chicago, Illinois where he earned himself a place in the honours list of the college, and Chicago State University, Illinois, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Accounting and Management). While yet in School, he was honoured with the outstanding Student’s Award; The University Scholar’s Award and the Certificate of Merit in Accounting and Finance. With these early fascinating records, you don’t need a prophet to tell you Tinubu’s destination in life.
In 1992 during the Third Republic, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu won election as a Senator to represent Lagos West Constituency. In the Senate, he distinguished himself as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, Appropriation and Currency. Incidentally, it was short-lived due to the annulment of June 12, 1993 election which was irrefutably won by the late MKO Abiola. The annulment of that election ushered in complete disorder and confusion in the land. Then Tinubu became a founding member of National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group which mobilized support for the restoration of Democracy and recognition of the June 12 1993 results. The Government of Abacha came on board with a draconian template. Abacha ran a repressive military Government that held the people down. Many prominent Nigerians were arrested and thrown into jail with reckless abandon. Tinubu went into exile in 1994 and continued fighting the course from there. The Government instilled so much fear into the hearts of Nigerians that those opposed to dictatorship at the beginning compromised their positions and became government’s lap-dogs and their apologists, but Tinubu and his NADECO members refused to go off the boil, rather they kept the pot boiling. He returned to Nigeria in 1998, after the death of Abacha, which ushered in a transition to civilian rule. I believe it was in recognition of his undaunted and undeterred efforts and his huge financial commitments during these struggles that earned him victory in the AD gubernatorial primary in competition with Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu. In April 1999, he was elected the Executive Governor of Lagos State.

AS GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE
When a leader surrounds himself with excellent hands, the citizens live happily. Governor Tinubu surrounded himself with the best. As an exemplary, resourceful, perceptive, detribalized and intelligent leader, his cabinet was an assemblage of think-tanks, seasoned politicians and technocrats from Lagos and other parts of the Country. His ultimate goal was to give Lagos State the best. Below is the bird’s-eye-view of his cabinet make-up, aside Lagosians. Mr. Dele Aleke(Ekiti); Pastor Ben Akabueze(Anambra); Engr. Rauf Aregbesola(Osun); Mr. Wale Edun(Ogun); Professor Yemi Osibanjo(Ogun); Mr. Bayo Adewusi(Oyo); Chief Ebenezer Akinbolade(Ondo); Opeyemi Bamidele(Ekiti). Each of these men is a distinct personality. As a master strategist, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu harnessed their skills and achieved monumental growth in every facet of the economy of the state.
Tinubu is a dynamic leader with an infectious ebullience that inspires all who work with him. He laid the foundation for the transformation of Lagos from a metropolitan State to a model Mega City in Africa that it is today. As a first class financial strategist, Tinubu, overhauled and rejuvenated derelict areas of government and Revenue collection in the State. His great new ideas resulted in the astronomically high rise of the State’s monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), from the region of N600m to about N7b, by the time he was leaving office in 2007. His successor, Fashola stood on the foundation and improved on that when he came on board. Tinubu and his team gave a good account of themselves as the world’s excellence when the Federal Government under Chief Obasanjo took great exception to his creation of 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) in addition to the existing 20 Local Government Councils and seized Lagos State Allocations. The State under Asiwaju continued in progress and development. Many thought that Lagos State was in trouble but the great Financial Strategist and his team of experts rose to the occasion and kept the State afloat. He also initiated new road construction projects required to meet the needs of the fast growing population of Lagos State.
Knowing that a nation’s greatness or the greatness of a State is determined by how it treats its weakest members, he made good his promise of 10,000 housing units for the poor. His administration also established the office of the Public Defender (OPD) and the Citizen Mediation Center (CMC) during which time, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, our current Vice President was the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu excelled far more than his peers as Governor. His success was unparalleled. His policies were unmatched. He made sure that Lagos State remains on the path of political stability, growth and development.
For his phenomenal performances, he received several awards which include: Best Governor for the year 2000, by Nigeria – Belgium Chamber of Commerce, 2002 Best Practices Price, in improving the Living Environment by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the UN Habitat Group. 2000 Best Computerizes Government in Nigeria, African Service Leadership Award (Ghana) and an Honorary Doctor of Law degree by the Abia State University in recognition of his immense contribution to Democracy, good governance and development in Nigeria. More honours were still coming even after he left office as Governor. Leadership Newspaper said it best when it conferred on him, ‘’Person of the Year Award’’, in 2011. In October 2014, he received the Honorary Achievement Award from African Youth Entrepreneurs (AYE). This award was for Entrepreneurs and Business people that have made a huge impact on the African continent.
WHY THE BACKLASH?
I have noticed with dismay, that in some quarters that when lovers of good things talk about Tinubu’s achievements, some people react badly and I say to myself, ‘’WHY THE BACKLASH?’’ A man who should be applauded and rewarded for displaying all the attributes of a great leader. A man whose life is characterized by bravery and courage that defies imagination and who is always up against daunting odds. A man who has suffered persecutions, several arrests, harassments, embarrassments and detentions, not for offences he committed for personal gains, but for fighting for the common man, for justice, peace and progress of Nigeria. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Why denigrating a man who has just scored a golden goal that saved Nigeria from cataclysm, disintegration and decay? A man who has brought meaning to hard work. Why have you chosen to blacken his reputation by misguided insinuations? In the midst of all this, a young man had me in stitches. He said people are jealous because when they speak in public, what they get is a brief round of applause but when Asiwaju mounts the stage, he receives a tremendous and standing ovation. Well, it is very simple. He paid for it. He has built an Empire by dint of hard work, dedication and determination, which will always grow from strength to strength. The rest of Nigerians didn’t have the courage and the confidence to challenge the status quo.
There was a crying need for a knight in shining armour. The Country was sinking deeper and deeper into the pit of Corruption, Impunity, Unemployment, Poverty and gross mismanagement of our God-given resources. We were losing billions of Dollars hand over fist. Government officials were busy siphoning money away by dubious methods and under false pretences. Renowned Economists and Technocrats were writing and warning that the Nigeria project had gone badly adrift, but the government of the former President continued to play the ostrich. This devil-may-care attitude is rather infra dig for a leader who the people reposed too much confidence in. The former political office holders lent the imprimatur of their exalted offices to crimes which decent and committed leaders and men with conscience fear to touch with a ten meter pole. Corruption was at its peak. While citizens were languishing in poverty and want, the government officials, their families and cronies were living in the lap of luxury and in baronial splendor. There was a wide gap between the rich and the poor. It was a purgatory too hard to contemplate. America had in 2007, predicted Nigeria’s possible break-up come 2015. The signs were all over the place. Apprehension, fret and trepidation were already in the air, but the people in government were busy boasting that PDP would rule Nigeria for 60 years.
Little did they know that Ahmed Bola Tinubu in his sagacity had a card up his sleave. He took up the gauntlet, not because he has a particular axe to grind, but rather with the best of intentions. He began his rescue mission by travelling and traversing the length and breadth of Nigeria, having meetings with progressive-minded Nigerians, elder statesmen, human rights and pro-democracy activists, journalists, legal luminaries and labour unionists from across the nation. He also met with different opposition political parties namely, the ACN, CPC, ANPP and APGA, to form the All Progressive Congress (APC). This merger was to rescue the Country from sinking and disintegration and to restore a powerful Nigeria. The contest was very hot between the PDP and the APC. It was time to sort out the men from the boys. In the end, PDP, was beaten hollow. APC beat them at their own game with Mohammadu Buhari as the President. Those boasting to stay in power for 60 years returned from the outing empty-handed and crestfallen. It is said that when a man gets too full of confidence, he leaves himself wide open for a sucker punch. APC gave PDP a punch that turned the party topsy-turvy. It was a crushing defeat that destroyed their pride and confidence. They have become a bundle of nerves because a Daniel has come to judgment. Nigerians and indeed the whole world embraced the new Government with unmitigated delight. If one single individual is to be named as the power behind this victory, it is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Tinubu is a man of definite purpose, a leader worthy of emulation, a quintessence of a world hero. He is resourceful, responsible, effective, complaisant, competent, energetic, compassionate, genuine and selfless. His selfless and complaisant approach to life has endeared him to millions of supporters across Africa. In spite of his invaluable sacrifices, he was not keen to go into the contest, rather he supported Buhari every step of the way, to be in the saddle. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
He chose to be in the 1% category and he is always ready to confront the evil dragon of injustice, misrule, impunity and victimization. SO WHY THE BACKLASK?
THE SALT OF THE EARTH
The Holy Book made it crystal clear that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Every man of definite purpose is the salt of the earth and the light of his generation. Without controversy, salt is used to bring out the good taste of food, etc. Salt is also used to preserve something from decay, while light drives away darkness. This means that life itself will not taste better for some people without you; also darkness will continue to hinder some people from achieving their sweet dreams if you are not there. Many peoples’ lives and destinies are attached to you and they are waiting to be affected by what God has placed within you. You are destined to give their lives a meaning.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a child of special destiny and a man of definite purpose. That is why he is not afraid to have responsibilities dumped in his lap. Essentially, destiny is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. Hard work and discipline is the key to wake it up. Some people often pray to God to order their footsteps when they are not ready to move their foot. People also make achievements to an extent and get satisfied with what they have done. The folks in this school of thought compromise their stand when the chips are down. They lack courage, because at a still deeper level, they lack the immense energies which a tough and risky programme demands. They’d rather back down than spend two days in detention, to fight a good course to the end.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has a lot of people attached to his destiny from creation and the man is not resting on his oars. He is not failing them one bit. Many people today are destined to rule but their huge efforts to emerge as Presidents would always meet with a blank wall unless the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom is involved. Many potential Governors cannot be in the saddle as Governors , unless Asiwaju of Lagos is involved. Likewise potential Vice Presidents, Senators, Ministers etc. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is an extra-ordinary destiny helper. SO WHY THE BACKLASH? Tinubu derives joy in doing good. He has affected many lives across and beyond this country in a most positive way. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
One of the virtues that Asiwaju appreciates most is ‘’Forgiveness’’. In a function attended by both Tinubu and Chief Obasanjo, Asiwaju Tinubu told the world that former President Obasanjo’s action of withholding Lagos State Allocations was not with evil intentions. He said it was discipline from father to son which eventually brought out the best in him. Before this time, the impression in the minds of people was that both men were still at daggers drawn, but this statement has helped to clear the air. In the same vein, when APC won election, his astringent critics and opponents who were bent on getting his good name impaired dumped PDP for APC. He did not show them the door. He welcomed them with an expansive gesture and a happy smile. As a great leader and world hero, he understood that the practice of forgiveness is the most important contribution to the healing of the world. Moreover, it takes all sorts to make a world. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Asiwaju Tinubu is one of the most detribalized citizens of this Country. His cabinet make-up as a Governor attested to the validation of this claim. Furthermore, the one-day Governor programmes of the state ------- Spelling Competitions, were won by Ibos three times in a row during his tenure. The boys were not denied their scholarships because they were Ibos; rather they enjoyed all the benefits as worthy sons. Today, they are doing very well in life. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Tinubu is a friend and father to both the outstanding and the hoi-polloi. As a Governor, he built 10,000 housing units for the poor. His administration also established the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) and the Citizen Mediation Centre (CMC). SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Some say that backlash stems from, making way for his wife to become a Senator, etc. These family members are also destinies attached to his. Besides, if he had endured persecutions for the sake of Nigeria, his family members are also Nigerians and they have their destinies to fulfill. If he has given them a leg-up to realize their dreams, he has not derailed from his wonderful calling. Moreover, his wife is a witty and immensely erudite woman, who is making great impacts. SO WHY THE BACKLASH?
Why casting aspersions on the honour of a man who has sacrificed so much for this Country. Nigerians today, are beaming with satisfaction over a new and focused Government because Tinubu dared to think creatively along uncharted fields. No darkness was able to resist the powerful light in his Common Sense Revolution. This is the first of its kind in Africa. To knock a sitting President off his pedestal is no mean feat. He has proved to Africa and indeed the world that he is a hero.
As a Senator, he was Resourceful; As a Crusader, he was fearless and uncompromising; As a Governor, he was ebullient, exceptional and unique; As a National Leader, he is a hero with a difference; As an African Leader, he is a rare icon. His life is in many volumes, which can only be told with care and time, of commitment and focus, integrity and discipline, and an unbroken love for the highest ideals of our shared humanity. The words of Albert Einstein said it all, ’’Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth’’. And if I may be bold to offer my last piece of advice, Rather than criticize and misplace insinuations, why not choose to find out those unique qualities that make him rise above the rest. It will help you unlock your own greatness.
