Have you ever been to an airport that you’d consider dangerous? Flying is statistically the safest form of travelling. Despite this, many people have a fear of flying. Perhaps it’s the lack of self-control or maybe it’s just that some airports are just plain terrifying! Here’s our list of the 25 most terrifying airports that are best avoided.

25. JFK International

This airport may well be a surprise inclusion for some. While many of the airports on this list are poorly situated or in poor shape, JFK is here because of the sheer volume of air traffic it experiences on a daily basis. It’s therefore essential that traffic controller and pilots work together to avoid any potential mishaps.

24. Agatti Aerodrome

The only airstrip in the archipelago, the Agatti Aerodrome can be found at the southern end of Agatti Island. Constructed in 1987, it’s surrounded by the Indian Ocean and has just one asphalt runway which can prove testing for even the most experienced pilots. Fortunately, there are plans for expansion.

23. Ibrahim Nasir International

The main international airport in the Maldives, Ibrahim Nasir Airport is well connected due to its popularity as a tourist destination. It’s a gateway to the Maldives and is located on Hulhule Island. A lack of space for planes to manoeuvre as well as a constant risk of floods means that this airport is not without its fair share of dangers.

22. Barra Airport

Barra Airport is particularly unique for one reason: it’s the only airport in the world which has a beach for a runway. Located on the island of Barra just off Scotland, the sandy runways naturally get flooded from time to time by the tide. This can cause flight times to changes quite considerably.

21. Catalina Airport

This privately owned airport can be found on the island of Catalina, just off the Californian coast. Although the airport is open to the public it tends to see only more experienced pilots. This is because the airport’s rather short runway has a steep drop off. All surrounding roads to the airport are also notoriously steep.

20. Princess Juliana International

You may well have seen photos of planes coming in to land at this particular Caribbean island´s airport. It is famous for its particularly close proximity to a local beach. In fact, tourists of Saint Martin often visit there in order to get up close and personal with aircraft which fly just over their heads. There are several signs which warn of the dangers of the jet blast.

19. Los Angeles International

You may also know it as LAX; Los Angeles International Airport is one of the busiest in the USA. Every year it sees tens of millions of arriving and departing passengers. Unfortunately, several air crashes and incidents including terrorist bombings have resulted in this US airport being labelled one of the world´s most dangerous.

18. Svalbard Airport

It’s easy to see why this airport could be dangerous. Surrounded by the ice cold Greenland Sea and snow-capped mountains, it is the northernmost public airport in the world. The airport has seen two fatal crashes. The first killed six passengers in 1986, the other took place ten years later and saw the deaths of some 141 people.

17. Kansai International

This particular airport is somewhat unusual in the sense that is on an artificial island connected to mainland Japan. The main problem for Kansai International Airport is its low elevation. The possibility of earthquakes and other harsh weather conditions do pose some risk. Despite this, relatively few incidents have occurred since its opening in 1994.

16. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport

The fact that it has the shortest commercial runway in the world should tell you all you need to know! Situated on the small Caribbean island of Saba, it is surrounded by hills and cliffs. It is for these reasons that the airport is only used by smaller aircraft. However even these have some difficulty landing on the 396m runway.

15. Gibraltar International

Handling just a few hundred thousand passengers per year, Gibraltar International Airport intersects one of Gibraltar’s main roads. As a result, the section of road has to be closed off every time a plan lands or takes off. Though this sounds particularly dangerous, the few accidents at this airport were unrelated to this.

14. Wellington International

Flying into the capital of New Zealand can be a somewhat daunting experience. Strong winds and a funnelling effect from the Cook Strait result in some particularly turbulent landings. Furthermore, Wellington International Airport’s runway is particularly short and bordered by the ocean. Despite these hazards, there have thankfully been few incidents of note.

13. Kai Tak Airport

Considering Kai Tak Airport sat in the midst of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and mountains, its no wonder it was closed in 1998. Its single runway was on Victoria Harbour – such a short and narrow stretch made landings particularly difficult. Needless to say Kai Tak experienced its fair share of accidents before it was replaced by the Hong Kong International Airport.

12. Ice Runway

If you’re looking for extreme, look no further than Ice Runway in Antarctica. Used by the US Antarctic Program, the runway is constructed each year before the start of the Antarctic field season. It’s discontinued when the ice begins to break in December. The main danger of Ice Runway is apparent – the harsh Antarctic weather!

11. São Paulo/Congonhas Airport

Congonhas Airport is named after the neighbourhood of Sao Paulo where it is located. It is one of three commercial airports serving the Brazilian city. Situated in a downtown city area, it was constructed back in the 1930’s. The increasing urban sprawl surrounding the airport has significantly reduced landing space over time.

10. Tufi Airport

One of the smallest airports on this list, Tufi Airport is located in Papua New Guinea and serves the coastal town of Tufi. It’s plain to see why this airport could be considered daunting – the runway is nothing more than a dirt track. However the airport does hope to become an international airport with connections to Cairns, Australia.

9. Sandane Airport

This regional airport is situated on a peninsula in Norway and has just one asphalt runway. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named it one of the world´s scariest runways. Nestled between two fjords, strong winds and severe turbulence make this one of the most challenging airports in Europe.
