The US says Turkey’s operations are not “directed” at Islamic State and the Pentagon would like Ankara “to do more” both in the air and on the ground. It has also failed to control its borders “effectively,” Secretary of Defense Ash Carter told Congress.

“I have been urging, actually, since I’ve come to this job, Turkey to do more,” the US defense chief said.

Carter stressed that Turkey’s geography – “right there next to Iraq and Syria” – makes it an especially useful asset to the US-led mission against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), but its NATO ally has failed to pull its weight so far.

“Most of their air operations are not directed at ISIL,” Carter said. “They are directed at the PKK, which we understand their concern about — it’s a terrorist organization within their borders — but we would like to see them do more against ISIL.”

The Pentagon wants Turkey to focus primarily on “its own territories,” i.e. go after “tentacles of ISIS” in Turkish territory and better control its borders with Syria, “which it has not done effectively since ISIS arose,” according to Carter’s testimony.

“We would like them to operate more both in the air and on the ground,” the Defense Secretary said.

In mid-November, the US and Turkey “entered an operation” to entirely close off the border of northern Syria, the territory long contested between Kurdish militias and IS fighters. The agreement came not long after Ankara declared its plans to “act militarily” against Islamic State.

Even earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had stated that he would “do what is necessary,” including using force, to combat the Kurdish “mindset” of autonomy in Syria.

Since beginning its military operations, Turkey has been accused of targeting Kurdish militias that are fighting IS but also aligned with Turkish Kurds against the Turkish government.

The Kurds have also been involved in the fight against IS in Iraq, where in November they launched an offensive to retake Iraq’s northern city of Sinjar, which had been controlled by Islamic State for over a year.

The operation, dubbed Free Sinjar, included the Turkey-based Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), among several other factions.

In his Tuesday testimony, Carter also announced the deployment of special forces to Syria to “conduct raids, free hostages, gather intelligence, and capture ISIL leaders.”

“That creates a virtuous cycle of better intelligence, which generates more targets, more raids, and more momentum,” he added.

Wesley Clark: ISIS "Serving Interests Of Turkey And Saudi Arabia," "Someone's Buying The Oil ISIS Is Selling"

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Wesley Clark explains that the existence of the Islamic State helps Sunni countries Turkey and Saudi Arabia geostrategically, by countering the shi'ite powers: Iran, Iraq and Syria.

"All along there’s always been the idea that Turkey was supporting ISIS in some way… Someone’s buying that oil that ISIS is selling, it’s going through somewhere, it looks to me like it’s probably going through Turkey, but the Turks haven't acknowledged that."

“Let’s be very clear: ISIS [ISIL] is not just a terrorist organization, it is a Sunni terrorist organization. It means it blocks and targets Shia, and that means it’s serving the interests of Turkey and Saudi Arabia even as it poses a threat to them,” Clark said.

"There’s no good guy in this, this is a power struggle for the future of the Middle East," concluded Clark.

'We reject the premise that the Turkish government is in league with ISIL to smuggle oil,' State Dept. says

World Bulletin / News Desk

The U.S. on Wednesday sharply refuted Russian allegations that Turkey is facilitating ISIL oil sales.

“We reject the premise that the Turkish government is in league with ISIL to smuggle oil. We have seen no evidence to support such an accusation,” State Department spokeswoman Julia Mason said in a statement.

“Turkey is taking steps to improve the security of its border with Syria, working with international partners. One goal of this effort is to cut off ISIL smuggling,” Mason added.

Following the downing of a Russian warplane that violated Turkey’s airspace near the Syrian border on Nov. 24, Russia announced sanctions against Turkey and President Vladimir Putin has alleged Turkish involvement in oil purchases from ISIL.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has challenged Putin and said he will step down if Russian claims that Turkey buys oil from ISIL are proved. He called on Putin to do the same if they are not.

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Warren also dismissed Russia's claims as "preposterous" and "ridiculous".

"We absolutely flatly reject that notion," he told reporters via video conference from Baghdad. "The Turks have been great partners to us in the fight against ISIL."

"Any thought that the Turkish government is somehow working with ISIL is again, it's just preposterous, and completely untrue," he added

Originally appeared at The Washington Times

Based on reported information, the Turkish shoot-down of a Russian SU-24 jet bomber along the Syrian border on Nov. 24 points to a preplanned, contrived incident that had to be authorized by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. While Turkey is a NATO ally, Mr. Erdogan is a very dangerous individual, who is a committed Islamist and has essentially transformed what was once a secular nation into an Islamic state.

The claim that Turkey authorized the shoot-down only after repeated warnings within a period of five minutes is immaterial. Standard, internationally recognized response to a slight incursion into another nation’s airspace is to issue warnings, then escort the penetrating aircraft until it exits restricted airspace. According to a U.S. CENTCOM spokesman, it remains unclear which side of the border the Russian bomber was on.

Immediately after the incident, Turkey sent a letter to NATO headquarters in Brussels, describing the Russian jet incursion of being “less than 2 miles and lasting 17 seconds.” Clearly, there was no direct threat to Turkey’s sovereignty. President Obama’s support for the action of his close friend, Mr. Erdogan, in defending Turkish territory was misplaced.

There is no question that we have a convoluted, multifaceted situation in Syria. Turkey is an ally of the so-called Free Syrian Army rebel opposition group fighting Russia’s ally, President Bashar Assad. Turkey, according to Vladimir Putin, is also an ally of the Islamic State, or ISIS. He bases his claim on the fact that ISIS reportedly smuggles large volumes of oil via known trade routes going almost exclusively through Turkey. Further, it has been known since 2014 that ISIS supply lines originate in Turkey and, according to one German reporter, Tony Cartalucci, hundreds of trader trucks per day transit Turkey to support ISIS.

Since ISIS is a sworn enemy of the United States and Mr. Obama’s latest strategy is to “contain and destroy” ISIS, the question must be raised: Why hasn’t Mr. Obama demanded that Mr. Erdogan cut not only the ISIS supply lines going through Turkey, but also terminate its purchase of black market oil? Another question: After a 16-month U.S. air campaign to destroy ISIS, why haven’t the organization’s oil facilities been destroyed? Why are we now just getting around to destroying ISIS’ oil trucks?

A CENTCOM spokesperson announced with “some pride” that prior to destroying 160 oil trucks recently, U.S. planes dropped leaflets telling the drivers that we were going to strike those oil trucks. We then apparently made several low passes to further scare off the drivers. This “faculty lounge” logic makes absolutely no sense. This type of so-called “humanitarian concern” only will jeopardize our own pilots and aircraft. It is only a matter of time before ISIS uses such prior notification to guide its shoulder-fired missiles, causing the loss of American pilots and aircraft.

This is the same type of illogical thinking that went on in Vietnam. Secretary of State Dean Rusk would pass to the Swiss Embassy in Washington the targets we were going to strike the next day with instructions to pass them to the North Vietnamese through their embassy in Hanoi. The logic was that we hoped North Vietnamese officials would tell their workers to stay home that day, since we didn’t want to inflict civilian casualties.

The North Vietnamese concentrated their surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery around those targets and that’s why our pilots encountered such devastating resistance, which cost the lives of many American pilots and POWs. What Rusk and the Johnson administration did was unconscionable, and they should have been tried for treason. We are seeing this same nonsense today in Iraq and Syria. If the Joint Chiefs of Staff don’t formally object to these type of procedures, then they must be held accountable.

Syria is the site of a traditional Sunni-Shiite conflict. We have the Islamic State with its declared caliphate against all other factions. The United States opposes ISIS but supports the Free Syrian Army. Both Russia and the U.S. are conducting daily airstrikes in support of opposing factions in a relatively confined airspace. To prevent incidents, a memorandum of understanding was fortunately signed on Oct. 27, which outlines rules and procedures for sharing airspace over Syria. The United States signed the memorandum on behalf of its anti-Islamic State coalition, which includes Turkey. Clearly, if Turkey shot down the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace, then this would be a violation of the memorandum, and Turkey must be held accountable.

Of course, the question that needs an answer is why Turkey in this volatile situation would deliberately provoke such an international incident. The answer may be found in the fact that Mr. Erdogan supports the Muslim Brotherhood plan for Islam’s goal of world dominance. The Muslim Brotherhood fully supports the ISIS declaration of an Islamic caliphate — it coincides with al Qaeda’s seven-phase plan for total victory. The plan states that the caliphate would be declared during Phase Five (2013-2016). Phase Six (2016-2020) would be a devastating war that leads to an Islamic victory.

A case can be made that Mr. Erdogan of Turkey provoked this incident in an attempt to bring NATO into a direct conflict with Russia in the confused multifaceted conflict in Syria and Iraq, thereby, moving to the Muslim Brotherhood’s sixth phase of total war. If this, in fact, was the objective, then Mr. Erdogan’s contrived shoot-down failed, and Turkey must be put on notice that its status as a NATO ally is in jeopardy.

Turkish troops are presently in Iraqi territory uninvited.

Not a word from the pro-Turkish bandwagon!

Fact is, Russia has provided satellite imagery of the massive oil smuggling exercise from stolen Syrian and Iraqi crude oil overseen and enabled by member of the Turkish government, yet these images have been waved aside as "fabrications"

Members of the Turkish press, parliament and military are being jailed or silenced for outing the complicity of the Turkish government and/or refusing to follow orders and yet these are waved aside also as irrelevant events. These arrested individuals we must accept are paid Russian trolls or bots just like the rest of the hope.less bots we find aplenty here on Nairaland. They are just "making mouth" with no shred of evidence that Turkish goverment is complict in this conspiracy.

Several Western (British, American, German, etc) news media have carried these reports of the massive oil trade being carried out across the Turkish border and how the Turkish border guards look away or allow their posts to be thinly manned but these are disregard as unfounded rumours and Russian propaganda. As a matter of fact, Turkish soldiers have been videod at the border fratenizing with ISIS foot soldiers but we gotta assume that these must be some sorta Russian voodoo trick.

A reporter, Serena Shim has mysteriously died while reporting on the illict trade between ISIS and the Turkish government. What's more, the investigation (or lack thereof) of her death has been beset by secrecy and intimidation but hey, who gives a hoot! This is the Turkish government we are talking about here; vetted and protected by NATO enagaged in a noble war against the "Russian aggressor"

The US VIce president himself has accused the Turkish government has far back as 2014 of aiding and abetting Islamic fundamentalists but hey, we should pay
no attention to that raging lun.a.tic who undoubtedly suffers bouts of dementia.

At the end of the day:

Lavrov: Turkey Has Long Supported Daesh Oil Trade, Terrorists' Efforts

While Russia only recently revealed evidence of Turkey’s involvement in terrorist oil smuggling, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow has long known about the issue, but until recently did not want to believe that Ankara was as deeply involved as it seems to be.

As Daesh, also known as ISIL/the Islamic State, spreads its terror across the globe, its operations are financed primarily through illegal oil trade. Extracting crude from fields in Iraq and Syria, the terrorist group earns, roughly, $3 million per day.

Earlier this month, Russia presented satellite images which show how that the oil is being sold via smuggling routes through Turkey.

While Ankara has denied its role in Daesh’s oil trade, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said these allegations were a long time coming.

"Frankly, we have known for a long time how Turkish territory is being used for commercial operations with ISIS (Daesh), for the transfer of weapons and terrorists to Syria, as well as to provide extremists and militants with an opportunity to heal and rest, and then get ready for new operations, not only in Syria, but also in other regions, including our North Caucasus," he said in an interview with Italian media on Wednesday.

Lavrov also linked Turkey’s illicit activities to the downing of the Russian Su-24 warplane in Syrian airspace last month.

"We see no other explanation other than a desire [by Turkey] to disrupt counterterrorism efforts and make them less effective, or to prevent the Russian Federation from working in Syrian airspace, or perhaps even to derail the political process beginning to take shape on the basis of the Vienna agreement," Lavrov said.

The foreign minister also asked "why is it [Turkey is] not bombing terrorists as such, but the Kurds instead?"

A number of other countries have also put forth evidence of Ankara’s dealings. Most notable, perhaps, are allegations from the Iranian government.

"Iranian military advisors in Syria have taken photos and filmed the routes used by ISIL’s oil tankers to Turkey," Iran’s Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaie told reporters on Friday.

"If the Turkish authorities are unaware of the Daesh oil sales in their country, then we can provide them with such intelligence."

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has also supported Russia’s claims. A statement on the prime minister’s website "stressed the importance of stopping oil smuggling by the terrorist gangs of Daesh, most of which is smuggled through Turkey."

Turkey, part of the US-led bombing coalition, has denied any affiliations with Daesh, and has instead blamed the Syrian government of dealing in illegal oil. Ankara has not offered any evidence for those claims.

'Turkey Has Become a Danger for Everyone' - French ex-General

Turkey's Erdogan has become a global danger, as he prefers fighting Kurds and engages in double-dealing with ISIL, according to retired French general and analyst Vincent Desportes.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's double-dealing with the Daesh (also known as ISIL) terrorist group is a danger for the entire world, retired French general and analyst Vincent Desportes told Sputnik France.

According to Desportes, the current crisis surrounding Turkey's actions toward Russia, Syria and Iraq cannot be resolved until Turkey decides which side it it is on, and who its true enemy is. Kurdistan remains Turkey's biggest source of worry, Desportes said, adding that Erdogan's "real enemy is not the Islamic State, but the Kurdish independence movement."

"The duplicity of Turkey is in that it is in NATO, yet absent from it, that it wants to be in Europe, but while together with it, it is double dealing with Daesh," Desportes said.

A group of coalition forces, which includes People's Protection Units (YPG) Women's Protection Units (YPJ), Sutoro militia, a pro-government Syriac Christian movement, and other forces, monitor the area in al-Hol in the Syrian Hasakeh province, some 650 kms northeast of Damascus, near the Iraqi border on November 2, 2015

Turkey recently downed a Russian plane over Syria, and has invaded Iraq's Mosul region. In Iraqi Kurdistan, Turkey reportedly bombed the Qandil mountains, where it believes camps of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, an opposition group banned in Turkey, are located. Syrian Kurdish forces, which receive aid from the US, have also been under attack from Turkish-backed rebels in recent months.
"Turkey actually presents a danger for everyone. To resolve the crisis, Turkey needs to be brought to reason, so that it understands its true interests, and not the short-term ones," Desportes added.

According to Desportes, Turkey's isolation is also unhelpful to the situation, as the country's behavior is main problem the international community must now solve.

The Kremlin’s propaganda continues to advance by leaps and bounds. Instead of being embarrassed by the constant stream of debunked news stories, Russia’s agitprop machine is on the offensive. The principle of “mirroring” is a common Soviet/post-Soviet tactic employed by the Russian Federation, brazenly accusing opponents of the same actions Moscow is undertaking. Russia’s talking heads and Internet trolls have taken to accusing the West of inventing “the myth of Russian propaganda.” The Kremlin’s official and unofficial spokespersons disingenuously accuse Ukraine of “faking the news.” The stream of phony “experts” delivers deliberately false narrative to please the likes of RT and Sputnik. Russian media outlets tirelessly disseminate various hit pieces, targeting reporters and researchers who successfully debunk Kremlin propaganda. They’re aided by hordes of paid trolls. Nonetheless, this elaborate smokescreen is not sufficient to override outrageous misrepresentations and outright fabrications birthed by Russia as a diversion for its covert offensive in Ukraine.

Having been debunked on so many prior occasions, Russian news outlets have largely changed their previous tactic of using photographs and videos from other regions and time periods, while falsely alleging they pertain to the current hostilities in Ukraine. Current propaganda tactics rely on various strawmen (such as stringers, bloggers or “experts”) to deliver fake or misleading news coverage. Russian networks in turn use this information “as reported by” various third parties, in an attempt to distance themselves from the content that is subject to being debunked.

ISIS is selling oil to Syria, the very country the militant group is trying to take over.

Apparently, ISIS makes $1.5 million a day by selling oil, making it a strategic priority to take over oil fields and refineries in Syria.

The Syrian government, ruled by the brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad, is currently engaged in a civil war with various rebel groups, as well as a war against ISIS, which is trying to establish a caliphate in the region.

Syria needs oil to fight these wars, and since ISIS controls a significant amount of the oil production infrastructure in the country, they are forced to buy oil from ISIS.

In addition to selling to Syria, ISIS also sells oil to black market traders in the region, who sell the oil to rebel groups or people living in areas that ISIS controls.

A Syrian businessman described as the "middleman" for oil deals between ISIS and Bashar al-Assad's regime will be targeted for European Union sanctions on Saturday.

The listing of George Haswani, the owner of HESCO engineering company, sheds more light on financial links between Syria's regime and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS or Isil or Islamic State or Daiesh).

In public, the two belligerents claim to be sworn enemies. Isil has vowed to topple Mr Assad and transform Syria into an Islamic "Caliphate". But the rise of the jihadist movement has served Mr Assad's interests by allowing him to pose as an essential bulwark against Islamist terrorism.

Isil fighters captured the oilfields of eastern Syria in 2013. Since then, the regime is believed to have funded the jihadists by purchasing oil from Isil. But those links are understood to extend further than was previously thought. Instead of merely being a customer for Isil's oil, the regime is understood to be running some oil and gas installations jointly with the terrorist movement.

Mr Haswani's company, HESCO, operates a gas plant in Tabqa, a town in central Syria which was captured by Isil last August. Officials believe this installation is being run jointly by Isil and personnel from the regime. The gas facility continues to supply areas of Syria controlled by Mr Assad.

Other oil and gas fields in Isil's hands are thought to be operated by personnel who remain on the payroll of the regime's oil ministry. The oil is then sold to Mr Assad, who distributes it in areas he controls at relatively low prices, helping him to win the loyalty of local people.

Another fabrication:

Czech President: Turkey Acting Like Ally of Daesh, Shouldn’t be Part of EU

Czech President Milos Zeman has allegedly slammed the idea of Turkey joining the EU, stressing that Ankara appears to act as if it was an ally of Daesh (the Islamic state) militant group rather than that of western powers.

The remarks by the Czech leader were made at the end of his visit to the country’s north Bohemia region, where Zeman reportedly condemned EU authorities’ decision to provide Ankara with $3.2 billion aid package for keeping refugees fleeing violence in Syria on Turkish territory and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe.

"The Roman Empire, before it collapsed, too, paid tribute money to barbarians [for them not to pilfer its territory]," Zaman claimed, adding that Turkey usually acts like a Daesh ally rather than that of the West, despite being a NATO member.

Zeman explained his stance, arguing that Turkey can accommodate Syrian refugees on the grounds that majorities of populations in both nations have a common religion – Islam — and there is no cultural barrier between accepting and receiving sides.

“The danger does not rest in Islam as such but in transferring these [Muslim] habits to Europe,” he pointed out.

President Zeman also said that Brussels must regard Ankara with "caution," underscoring that Turkey is not purely a European nation and, considering this, shouldn’t be treated like every other EU country.

Zeman is not the first European politician who is skeptical of Turkey joining the EU.

According to PJ Media outlet, Geert Wilders, the head of Dutch far-right party (PVV) that has led the polls in the Netherlands for several months in a row, sticking to a similar position. He reiterated that even not radical Muslims moving to Europe bring their beliefs — which are not westernized and not enlightened enough – there.

Earlier in November, Ankara inked a deal with Brussels suggesting that Turkey will assist in tackling the flow of migrants to Europe in return for €3 billion package and the revival of negotiations on the country joining the EU.

Mounting Evidence: Ankara 'Playing Not a Very Clean Game' With Daesh

"Mounting evidence" suggests that "Turkey is playing not a very clean game" with regard to Daesh, Iraqi MP Mowaffak al-Rubaie asserted, accusing Ankara of smuggling oil stolen from Iraqi and Syrian oilfields, as well providing medical treatment to Daesh fighters.

Turkey has been recently embroiled in a number of scandals, with its dubious ties with the brutal group taking center stage.

Turkey's illegal oil business is a major area of concern. Ankara is "smuggling Iraqi oil and Syrian oil through the borders and selling it on the black market in Turkey," al-Rubaie, who served as national security adviser, told RT.
