International Masters Program...to Pursue Or Not? by Nefo: 12:43pm On Dec 06, 2015
Hi Nairalanders, please I need your advice. I am currently stuck in a job for 5years now and I think it's time to move on. I have given my best and there is no much to give any more. The pay is not bad but I feel everything now is a routine. There are times I will wake up and not feel like going to work. In fact there was a day I decided to stay at home and didn't bother calling in sick either. At about 9am, my boss called and asked why I wasn't at work yet and I told him I was on my way and ended the call. I was hoping for the Heavens to fall when I got to the office around 11am but he didn't utter a word throughout operational hours. I was expecting a query or something over the next few days but it never came. In fact I heard he told some colleagues that I am one of his strongholds and he would want to keep me close.

So, I decided that I will quit my job and pursue something else. I wanted to leave the country and pursue an International Masters Program. I started applying to various schools and admissions started rolling in. I also started saving up money for the next move because I knew I will need quite alot. I started contacting my buddies who have completed or pursuing their Masters degree abroad. The first guy I contact told me he had finished but yet to get a job. He made first class in Petroleum Engineering from a well known University. He complained so bitterly how rough things were in Europe and I parted with €100 to reduce his suffering. He wasn't begging me for money but he is my guy so I should know what to do. The next guy I contacted also told me same stories of woe and how he has been unable to find employment ever since. Finally, a friend who just completed his masters called and requested I pick him up at the airport which I gladly obliged. On our way home, I hinted him how I want to quit my job and pursue a masters program abroad. He gave me a stern look and said, please don't go...ITS NOT WORTH IT!!!. I asked him why, he said if you think Nigeria is the only country with employment problems then you have to wake up. A Masters degree program is good but not a pathway to success or better job. He also added that so many people have refused to come home while some have attained two masters degree programs and yet no job. House I need your advice, should I cancel or pursue. I have tried getting another job but it is not forthcoming.

My candid opinion cos am in same shoes as yours. Change direction, apply for your masters here in Naija. I did same. After hearing tales of woes from friends alike, I decided to apply to uniport for my masters while still at my job in d same port harcourt.
