ABUJA— Respite seems to be in sight for Nigerians over the unending fuel scarcity witnessed across the country, as the Federal Government, yesterday, said it has paid N407.077 billion to oil marketers for their outstanding subsidy claims.
Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja stated that the Presidency had directed that the payments be made immediately in order to bring to a quick end, the lingering fuel crisis which has caused great suffering to Nigerian families and businesses.
She said the payments include arrears from the 2014 financial year as well as payments for the current year, while she appealed to major oil marketers to reciprocate the action by doing all they can to bring the fuel scarcity to an end.
She also stated that despite dwindling revenues, the government is committed to ensuring continuous availability of fuel to Nigerians.
She said: “It is expected that the recipients would ensure adequate supply of fuel to end the persistent fuel shortage in the nation, especially as this  action shows that government is fully committed to meeting its financial obligations in respect of fuel subsidy.
“Details of the approved payments under the subsidy scheme will be published in the national dailies as has been the practice.”

If only the government was sincere to herself they would have paid since without exposing us to untold hardship in getting fuel and transportation which have had a serious ripple effect on our economy.

You'd recall that the previous government made no enough budget allocation for subsidy. These same cabal marketers have always done business with government being owed. It's their kicking against the current government that has been making them hold the country to ransom. Buhari sent supplementary budget to National Assembly more than two weeks ago. Instead of them to speedily approve, they didn't discuss it. Instead they were sampling whether to invite Buhari to ask him what is happening. They just approved the supplementary budget this week. Naturally, things will be back to normal this weekend.

N.B the DPR's inefficiency was exposed during this fuel crises. The work load was overwhelming for them.

So they have finally paid the money, finally gotten the money and finally resolved the matters connected there to.

I don't want to buy fuel at over 100 naira again.
It has never happened that fuel crises can be this biting and last this long.

Even if subsidy is removed, which I think the present government should leave this shows of 'slowness' and 'inconclusiveness' and throw away subsidy, we won't still need to buy fuel for over a hundred naira!

I agree this payment should have been made by now. However, with cash hard to come by these days verifying the claims is a must.

GEJ le shoeless allowed the marketers turn themselves to GOD, to reset them to default will take some time but it is obvious to even the blind that PMB is winning the war.

sorry to say this, you be confirmed mumu. What did Buhari say during campaign? He said he had only N1m so he had to take loan to obtain the nomination form. He had just 150 cow. One house in katstina etc. When he won and declared his asset did it tally with his previous statement? Deal with the reality on ground and leave a man who owes you nothing alone.

Google is free for searching, always try verifying things before conclusion. Buhari sent the supplementary budget to NASS as far as November 18, more than 3weeks ago. It was in the news. Unfortunately, the Presidency and his media team and information minister have been too silent in telling people the state of things.

Can you listen to yourself? Buhari sent supplementary appropriation to NASS more than two weeks and they approved 'this week', were they supposed to rubber stamp it for Buhari that same day? If Buhari appointed himself as the minister of petroleum and perhaps drawing ‎salary and other perks there-from, who should the national assembly summon to come and defend the budget on petroleum subsidy.

Buhari clearly lacks the capacity to function in a democracy and it's affecting Nigeria badly. How can someone even justify sending an appropriation bill to NASS just two weeks ago when the marketers have been demanding for their money since early June while the real fuel scarcity started more than two months ago? ‎

BTW, didn't you people say Buhari was 'saving money' for his 'own' 2016 budget; that he has no business with supplementary appropriation?

Someone like you was blindly arguing here the other day that Buhari could care less about the rest of the year from May 29th since he wasn't responsible for the current budget. He said all Buhari was doing was sitting idly by for the 2015 budget to 'run out'.

Why kind of governance method is that?‎‎

Well, we can blame them for that, but we should also appropriate the blame and fault of the National Assembly in been lax to approve. Marketers in Nigeria are kings, they strike at will, unfortunately they did early.

They should have expedited action, not for Buhari but for the Nation. i'm sure Buhari did not feel any fuel crises, it is the nation the masses that bore the brunt. Instead, the NASS were busy behaving like the ostrich burying its head in sand. They knew the next thing to do, they had the supplementary budget to approve, but they were passing motion on whether they should invite Buhari to come and tell them about the fuel crises or not. That's politics, should we test our power or flex our muscle on whether Buhari will be summoned or not? The solution was in ther hands but they were playing politics. The contents of the supplementary budget are very straight forward and there was no reduction made at the end. In fact, they ended up adding to it so why the initial waste of time?

Buhari clearly lacks the capacity to function in a democracy and it's affecting Nigeria badly. How can someone even justify sending an appropriation bill to NASS just two weeks ago when the marketers have been demanding for their money since early June while the real fuel scarcity started more than two months ago?

There you go, evidently you are prejudiced already. It's not the first time government is owing marketers. Government has always owed marketers, even NOI said that during the May fuel crises. The money paid has been owed since last year 2014, it's not just June, there's always been a backlog. The current FG is not taking it easy on the marketers and that is why the marketers are not taking it easy with the FG too. Cancellations and renegotiations, rebiddings and restructurings are ongoing‎ and the marketers are fighting and holding the nation to ransom. The so called CABAL is being tackled, instead of you to excercise patience, understanding and support, you are here talking rubbish. This isn't about APC and PDP or being anti-Buhari or pro-Buhari. Let's do things that will free this nation and move it forward.
NOI said earlier in May that they have always owed marketers and Nigerians should not allow themselves to be blackmailed. She said the process of paying marketers is always a rolling process and there has never been a time government reduced its financial obligation to marketers to zero .
Do you have any blame for the past government that budgeted 100billion naira only for subsidy in the 2015 budget?‎

Why kind of governance method is that?‎‎

i do not know who you refer to as 'you people', neither am i aware of what such people said. Stereotyping anybody who isn't anti-government is not intelligence neither is it the way forward. The past government handled the fuel crises worse than this in May, they left the country in total standstill. As at April 29, there was already a long wait at petrol stations, and the assurance was given by government. i believe you remember that crises lasted till June. Here is what NOI said in April, yet the crises continued and worsened over a month later "I am about to go and sign, to get that paid and I think that Nigerians can see that the government is making maximum effort to accommodate the oil marketers. They are also Nigerians, and they need to also cooperate with us.
It was still the same story by May 4 despite several meetings. By May 15, situations had worsened and the marketers were demanding for another 200billion naira. It's just this year, if you have forgotten, others have not. The marketers/cabal is what we should fight jointedly instead of making political statements that serve no good purpose. The fuel marketers DECIDED to shelve their swords in June. They decided to bring out that sword again last month. i think we should be patient with the new government.
