In Malawi, for example, missionaries encouraged the British government, through a series of letters, to put down the slave trade. (Nevermind that the British government was a slave trader) The British
government intervened in the 1880s. Yet the motivation for Great Britain to send troops
and become involved in the region was not really the lingering slave trade in Malawi.

Great Britain was concerned with the presence of the Portuguese in Mozambique. The
letters of the missionaries merely served as a convenient excuse to enter the region and
establish British interests.

2. What motivated him to leave the comforts of his place?

William Carey came to know of places in India through the publications of an secular explorer and Carey saw the spiritual need/condition spurred him to seek to take the Gospel to such places! Now will it be just in a court to hold that the explorers went to pave way for the missionaries? NO. Vice versa.
