Get a job in U.S and ask your employer to begin the initial application for you. This is what is applicable in UK, i should think it is the same for US too.

I studied civil engineering

Then for example you need to research suitable companies and apply to them on line or by post sending your details and qualifications.
If they offer you a job then they can sponsor a visa for you.

The US work permits available are a H1 visa if a company based in the US gives you a job and agrees to sponsor you or a L1 visa if you work for a company in Nigeria with presence in America and they transfer you over.

The H1 is very difficult to get as the company must be able to prove they couldn't find an American and also you must meet certain criteria such as minimum salary etc. The worse part of the H1 is it is based on a quota of 65k a year, but for the past few years has always been over subscribed by about 150k plus within a few days so it is based on a lottery among eligible applicants.

There is no quota for the L1 visa but you must have worked for the company in your home country for a year I think and they must be willing to transfer you over to their US office. There are other requirements such as demonstrating specialised knowledge etc but the main thing is to get a job with a company willing to transfer you.

You can try applying to companies in the US but the chances are slim especially if you do not have solid in demand experience.

Another option will be to go to the US to study the apply for graduate roles (depending on your experience level) in the US. You ha more of a chance than applying from nigeria.

Why don't you try the canadian skill workers program or better still the express entry. With you level of education and specialty of discipline, you should be in demand over there.

With canadian permanent resident you get 10 yrs u.s visa to travel back and forth to canada. All the options mentioned by members are not easy to get by more coming from nigeria.

Go to CIS website and check out the two programs I mentioned. Check which one fits your need.

Did you study civil engineering in the US or Nigeria? If the latter applies, then US employers would be reluctant to offer you employment because engineering is a regulated profession in North America.

I will say the truth, unless you are a highly skilled expert in a unique field, say Nuclear Weapons expert or a Huge Coy in the US like Exxon Mobil, Microsoft or even NASA files for you, an H1 Visa is not a jollof rice affair "From Nigeria" ... Even if all conditions are met, basically the coy files for you etc, those folks at the US Embassy are another hurdle.
Trust me, it's easier going to Canada from Nigeria as a skilled worker.

As much as i would not say it is impossible to get, i would say the chances of you getting an H1 visa from Nigeria is like the proverbial Camel passing through the eye of a needle. Companies here in America put it boldly on their career page that they dont offer sponsorship to get H1 visa or simply put they say "Would you at anytime during the process of this application require sponsorship for H1 visa" if your answer is Yes i guess they just send your CV to recycle bin.

I was reasearching for a friend who is planning to move his family here from the UK, even with his Phd in Computer engineering with specialty in Operations research, he was still turned down but i believe he still has a slim chance, we just have to persevere.

Anyways, check out websites of companies and apply to them, if you have what they need and thye cant get here which i doubt, they will consider you, its always a case of demand meeting supply.

I am not saying it's impossible, but it is almost impossible- look at it this way; She said she studied Civil engineering, unless nobody in the whole of America studied Civil Engineering (Which is impossible) before the company will assume she suits a position.
Even if she had a Phd in Civil Engineering, H1 Visa's are not easily filed for, unless on very rare occasions.
It's only Canada I know that makes skilled labour hiring look easy, but USA naaaaaaaaaah... If you ain't in the US, fuhgedabowrit.

US HARDLY hired medical doctors without any formal education (tertiary and special) in US.

I wouldn't have getting a job in the US from Nigeria with the hope of getting a H1 visa as my main strategy to get to the US because chances are very very slim. She can always try of course but she should look at other more viable options such as via F1 or look at Canada and Australia who have more favourable requirements at the moment.

Correct analysis. I already wrote on my previous writings, that canada is a very good option for her with better health system.

Nothing wrong in trying u.s still as her first choice.

Please is good you make some research your self. Uscis has a website where most of your questions are answered.

We don't know the type of visa or authorization card you are looking for as there are a lot of those. Yes you mentioned employment from.an employer but there are still different types of employment based visa

I'm currently residing in Nigeria and a Nigerian citizen as well, I'm at the verge of being offered a job at the United States but my potential employer is asking that I get a temporary I-551 stamp on my Nigerian passport or temporary I-551 printed notation on a machine readable immigrant visa. Attached with this mail is the document sent to me by my potential employer with what is required of me encircled. Please can anyone guide me on how to go about this and what are the requirements needed for me to attain this status.
