this thread is not about bashing any ethnic group...so bigots should keep off

out of the 36 states in Nigeria, I take pride in the fact that I have been to almost 2/3 of them, as a matter of fact I have been to all geo political zones in this country......thanks to business, education, etc..

during the course of my travels, I have come in contact with so many people from the different ethnic groups that make up Nigeria and one thing I noticed is that the igbos have this nick for learning, speaking and ( almost) perfecting other people's language more than any other tribe in Nigeria,

for instance my own dad can speak hausa just like any hausa man I know (even the rankadede part way dy sweet me die) but I have not been able to see any hausa man who can speak igbo...,my yoruba neighbor can speak a little igbo but that's just it....my question is : is there any reason for this?

I know this. Not every southerner brands all northerners Hausas - I know who is who. I also know there are young Hausa men and women born and raised in towns and cities and even villages in the southeast who speak Igbo without any trace of a non-Igbo accent. Some of them were my playmates in my childhood days in Enugu.

Even in my home town, there are young Hausa tenants living in my uncle's compound who speak my 'native' dialect better than myself.

Then they're Igbos as far as i or any other Hausa is concerned. ethnicity without culture is worthless.

I'd love to meet them though.

Really?

Would you consider the hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of Kano-born, Kano-raised Igbos who speak fluent Hausa and no Igbo as Hausa?

And I never suggested that the Igbo-speaking Hausas who I know have no exposure to their own Hausa language and culture. Most of them speak Hausa with their parents and live like every other Hausa. All I said is they speak effortless Igbo, so I don't quite get what you mean by 'ethnicity without culture'.

nope, no i would not. its up to you guys to decide who they are.

its impossible for someone versed in hausa the hausa dialect to speak effortless igbo like youre saying. as the language structures are different he must be betraying one of them.

not denying their existence by the way, i've met some that understand parts of igbo, just that theyre very scarce. for one, even hausas who work in the east prefer to leave their family in the north, we like to keep in touch with our culture. Also, hausas are not concerned with or interested in learning other nigerian languages, I've be it fulfulde or yoruba, its actually a flaw but thats the way it is.

FYI, that Igbo is too 'wooden' to be written by me. And I can't type a phrase in Hausa even if my life depended on it. But you are welcome to continue making assumptions like this. After all, assumptions and deliberate attempts to irritate people are things you seem to enjoy doing on this forum.

If telling you that I know Hausa boys in Enugu and Awka who are fluent in Igbo 'forces' you to act like a douche, then you need to do a self reexamination. You could be a douche for real.

well, almost everyone on NL has multiple accounts and yes they do come in handy for them in these situations when trying to prove a point.

you're the one with the dim witted thought process, probably because you haven't been here for long or youre just, you know....

I think it's almost impossible to find a hausa man who speaks Igbo.

Lots of Hausas living in the east speak Igbo fluently. You just don't find them online. Neither would you easily find them in the North or West. You need to be in the east to see them. I grew up partially in Owerri and in the state capital, the Hausas have a thriving settlement called 'ama awusa' in Igbo meaning 'Hausa settlement/area', where they live, trade and co-habit peacefully with the Igbos. Tons of those Hausas speak and understand Igbo fluently, many times with an Hausa accent. Just walking past that area you would find several smart well-dressed Hausa businessmen by the roadside speaking fluent Igbo to you trying to attract you to their line of business. These men trade in several lines of business from currency exchange, tailoring, suya businesses etc.

The fact is that Hausas are just not predisposed like the Igbos or Yorubas to actively use social media and it explains why you don't find much of them on this forum. Thus you have a very small sample size for your statistics.

I have seen several Yorubas who can speak Igbo as well, but they were mostly in the East. Heck while I was in UNN, this yoruba man, ayo, could speak not just Igbo but very core Nsukka dialect, as natively as the lead actress in the Igbo movie, Nwa Nsukka, could speak it. Yorubas are not predisposed to traveling to the east that much so you have a smaller number of those who speak Igbo.

Just as the multi-lingual Igbos you see are those living outside Igboland, you would have to travel to Igboland to find Igbo-speaking non natives.

From my observation, Yorubas are not as inclined to learn Igbo language as Igbos are to learn Yoruba or Hausa. The Hausas seem to be more inclined to learn Igbo than Yorubas. I know this Yoruba real estate agent in Owerri who speaks Igbo very well and it really helps his business. This is the very same ideology that the Igbos realize that makes those living outside Igboland willing to learn the language of their hosts to promote their business.

In Nigeria, those from the south-south especially the Ibibio/Efik, parts of Ijawland etc. and the Idomas, Hausas etc. show the most willingness to learn Igbo language.

I've written about this before. There are lots of Igbo-speaking non Igbos especially in the south east but you don't often see them. Nollywood should begin producing movies acted entirely by Igbo-speaking non Igbos and watch how these movies would sell. There are many of them out there. It would definitely be a pleasant sight to tune to an Igbo language movie with cast names all of non-Igbo origin but acted entirely in Igbo language.
