What A Father Told His Son Who Is About To Start A University by Scholar1234: 11:20am On Jan 08, 2016
My son, tomorrow you will start a new life . You will
continue in your quest for knowledge in the University.I
know I have only standard 6, don't be ashame of me
because my education qualifications is no longer
valued. I have fulfilled my own part in your life, it is
now your time to fight and become a man .
From your childhood, I raise you with care and love.
Before you jump into the four walls of the university,
there are few things I need to tell you about life in the
university.
It is obvious you have finished your secondary school
education before your agemate. You were very young
when I enroll you in nursery school, at that time, people
advised I shouldn't have send you to school because all
you do was to always cry.... I remember I used to
prepare extra food in a feeding pack for you to go with
to school even uptil when you were in Primary 5, the
year you took your first school leaving certificate
examination was the year you were 7 yrs old.
Do you remember how your mates older than you in
school used to beat and bully you..? I was there to
protect and encourage you even when you regret
getting admission into secondary school , you always
say school was not for young people like you.. I am
glad you aspired for university education and by the
grace of God you have gotten admission into the
University.
Sometimes things may get tough, I may not provide for
you as they do for other kids in schools, you will have
to endure, I remember I was in standard 5 when my
father said he could not longer sponsor my education
as his firewood business has crashed. I took it upon
myself to pay my fees, I will join the fishermen in
searching for fish in the night, I will sell the fish in the
morning market before going to school....it wasn't an
easy task for me.
My son , the government don't have jobs, try and be an
entrepreneur , study and at the same time be
productive...you will see when you the good part when
you graduate, you will not beg for job.
Do you remember when you wrote your WAEC and
JAMB exams last year? You came to me and I gave
you 25,000 naira for the registration?
Well, even though I gave it to you, the money was not
mine. I know you always thought I paid the fees. The
truth is, I was broke…. I borrowed the money. Mr.
Akpan , your uncle gave it to me, he would have
decided to invest the money in his palm wine tapping
business but he decided to give it out for your
education .
Support your family. Some times they will want to feel
your presence, don't snub on them.… you family will
want to be seeing you at all time, they will want to
come near. Don't say they are not your class.
Before I forget, hope you know Christiana who lives in
the other street, she graduated from university years
back, she was always proud and look down on both
boys and girls , she dreamt of marrying a senator's son,
I was drinking palm wine with her when she harassed
and insulted a young man who just wanted to say
"hello to her" without knowing she was harassing her
dream man, the next month the young man father was
made a senator, I was still drinking palm wine with her
father when I notice her trying to get the attention of
that same young man, so my son what am trying to say
is that you shouldn't be proud, you see Chigozie your
friend, don't ever look down on him because he didn't
pass JAMB or for any other reason. Strive to be
humble.
My son, you will see different kind of people in the
university, accept them all but don't accept all their
characters, don't take all advise from them, chose few
to your friend. You are old enough to know good from
bad, you will see things but you should endeavor to
select the good from bad, you will hear announcement
of parties and clubs , don't attend them all, remember
we are expecting you to come out with a good result.
Distractions comes in this form and will never help you
to succeed.
There is no doubt that there are secret group in the
university, my son avoid their ways , they may come as
friends, beware of how you chose friends, avoid parties
because most forceful initiation into secret cult group
are done in closed door parties invited by friends. It's
true that "if you carry your face like rat, you must be
pursued by cat" , avoid behaving like a bad boy or don't
be surprise if you see them persuading you to join their
group and become the real bad boy, don't dress as if
you are member of a cult group or don't be surprise if
you see the real cult group chasing you... My son am
not wishing you any bad. We are praying for your
success but it's up to you to accomplish this task of
becoming a man.
It is obvious that ladies will come round and your eyes
will behold beautiful girls....remember no girl will love
an unsuccessful man, before I married your mother ,
fathers brought their daughters to me, they wanted me
to take them as my second wife..it was a result of
being able to finish and passed my standard 6
examination, it was then that I discover that success
does it all....if I had used my pocket money to chase
women while I was in school, I wouldn't have gotten my
standard 6 certificate.. Avoid ladies, the girls you will
see tomorrow will be more beautiful than the ones you
see today..
My son , we are sending you to school , we know that
you must come back with a certificate, the paper is
worth nothing if you cannot offer anything good to the
society, as you coming back try to have something
good to offer to the society , a man is nothing if he
cannot change the live of another man....You see that
railway that you are going to make use of to travel to
the city tomorrow , I wrote the British officers about
the inability of our to people to travel because of lack
of good roads, that letter made them provide us with
that railway, I wrote that letter after writing my
standard 6 examination , it was a way of offering
something to the society, apart from that I didn't wait
to be employed in the office , I started writing letters
for those who want to communicate with their friends
and family far away and made some little cash to
sustain a living, am emphasizing on this because I have
seen graduates hovering the streets looking for jobs,
your case should be a different case.... you shouldn't
wait for the government to always feed you. As a result
of the letter I wrote , I was employed by the white men
to serve as an Information relation officer whenever
they want to communicate to our people.....even the
best student in our set who always aspire to work with
the white men didn't have the opportunity, that is why
they see as a popular man in this community and
beyond, this is to tell that there is something good in
rendering services to the society you find yourself....
Finally, we are humans, we don't know what will
happen tomorrow, I wish you God's protection and
blessing alongside with success .....
