Ibadan: Masquerade in court for theft


A popular Ibadan masquerade, Alapansanpa, yesterday appeared before an Ibadan Chief Magistrate’s Court on a three count-charge of assault, stealing and willful damage to property.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Ade Adebusuyi, alleged that the masquerade and others now at large, committed the crime on June 16 at Kosodo-Eleta area of Ibadan during the ongoing masquerade festival.

Adebusuyi told Chief Magistrate Olubunmi Ajadi that the masquerade assaulted one Mrs. Opeyemi Olosun by hitting her with an iron bar and caused her bodily harm.

The prosecutor also alleged that the masquerade stole from her a stethoscope valued at N12,000, her handset, valued at N4,500 and N8,650 cash.

He added that the masquerade also damaged three vehicles - a Mitsubishi Lancer car, a Nissan Sunny car and a Mitsubishi Gallant car -- by breaking their windscreens.

Adebusuyi also alleged that the masquerade and his accomplices stole one Nokia handset valued at N10, 000, property of one Mr. Oladipupo Awokoya.

The masquerade later pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mrs. Ajadi granted him bail for N100,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till July 24 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), however, reports that the masquerade was later sent to the Agodi Prisons, as it could not perfect its bail condition.

All those hiding under the cloak of culture to perpetrate evil in naija , your days are numbered. in fact it is time to ban all these stupid masquerade festivals that is not doing us any good , very shameful and backward things, i remember when they killed a Catholic Priest in Ezeagu all in the name of masquerade festival, God punish all of them properly!

The mask should be given a separate judgement for conspiracy to stealing/robbery,

While the thief him/herself, is charged for robbery. This means that peace will reign for the years in-which the mask is imprisoned.

It's not the masquerade stole or vandalized what they said; but his followers and other street urchins who used the opportunity to perpetrate their devilish deeds or hone their kleptomaniac skills.

Was it not men of the same Ibadan police that were alleged to have arrested a goat for stealing.Any more wonders why all manner of crime was committed in Ibadan,stands a very good chance of not being unravelled,what with their police regularly cahsing and arresting goats,pigs,masquerades,lizards,mosquitos and spirits for thefts,armed robberies and murders

Abomination! They send masqurade to court? Wetin be masqurade self? A masqurade is some one who claims what he or she is not. A human beign who claims to be a spirit. A thief who claims to be a pastor. A criminal who claims to be a leader and so on. Many of them are in the government houses, aso rock, ministeries, churches, internet etc. They all need to be arrested. Masqurade my foot.

You dont want to be down town lagos when those so called masquerades are on the loose.
Those urchins will steal, whip and terrorize people trying to go about their business. Last I checked it was human beings wearing those awful rags and calling themselves spirits.

I am sure they are trying to prosecute the person behind the masquerade. They don't know him yet unless they take out his mask . Legally, the masquerade is guilty but the person behind it is not guilty.

Spirit no de thief. They take what belongs to them. If the masquerade robbed you, it means you didn't pay tithes to the spirit.
