Enyimba, Akwa United battle for Charity Shield in Abuja

Nigerian champions Enyimba FC are in battle again, few days after they drew the short end against Ugandan champions Vipers FC in a first round, first leg CAF Champions League encounter in Kampala. This time, the People’s Elephant are up against Federation Cup winners Akwa United of Uyo in the annual Charity Cup match, in what is billed to be a titanic session at the National Stadium, Abuja on Wednesday.

The Charity Cup traditionally opens the football season. Akwa United are brimming with immense confidence following a run of marvelous results, including beating better –fancied Lobi Stars to win the Federation Cup and conquering fellow continental campaigners (Enyimba FC, Warri Wolves and Nasarawa in two rounds of the Super Four organized by the League Management Company. On Saturday, the boys from the Land of Promise boldly promised more, by beating more experienced Vita Club Mokanda of Congo 1-0 in Pointe Noir in a CAF Confederation Cup first round, first leg match.

In Abuja on Wednesday, Ubong Moses Ekpai, whose goal in Pointe Noir has made the return leg against Vita Club Mokanda an easier session, will seek more goals, with goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode, former junior international Samuel Okon, Namso Edo, Ubong Friday, Kufre Ebong and U-23 star Godspower Igudia also set to impress.

Enyimba FC have returned from Uganda feeling a sting, and it is the right time to let off steam and regain confidence ahead of the return leg against Vipers FC. Enyimba boast three of the best goalkeepers in the land, namely Olufemi Thomas, Moses Ocheje and Theophilus Afelokhai. Afelokhai was in action in Kampala, but any of the three can do a great job any day. They also have on their books Super Eagles’ aces Chima Akas, Kalu Orji and Ezekiel Bassey, as well as other decent names like Chinedu Udoji, Ugwu Uwadiegwu, Christian Pyagbara, Bartholomew Ibenegbu, Daniel Etor, Mfon Udoh, Andrew Abalogu, Oladapo Olufemi and Nzube Anaezemba. The match is also the perfect tune –up for both teams as the new Nigeria Professional Football League kicks off this weekend.

Enyimba the local champions: said it not long ago that they will, as usual, lose out at the CAF champions league.

Won't be surprised if Akwa Utd pulls this one off.

I beg why it's called charity or community shield world wide except for change language but the same meaning is because the proceeds from that match is give as to the needy. So there is no copy copy here

And when did copying become such a bad thing? Is it not wise to copy good things from your neighbour? Hoping you are aware that there were no league cups in Europe until everyone started copying the English. Even the Community Shield in England today is a copy of the European Super Cup. And as for the shield, the Germans were the first in Europe to issue shields in place of cups before the English took after them for their community shield.

I think Enyimba and Akwa Utd are in the same level and this should make the game interesting for neutrals. However, for some of us who are not neutrals, it will be Enyimba all the way even if I ain't watching as I'm at work.

The Enyimba striker is confident they will emerge winners of the 2016 Nigerian Charity Shield after seeing his move to his home town club turned down

Enyimba striker Mfon Udoh is confident his side will beat Akwa United when both sides clash in the 2016 Charity Shield match at the Abuja National Stadium on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old and his Enyimba teammates will come up against his hometown club in the season curtain-raiser in Nigeria’s capital and he is confident they will start the domestic season with a win.

“I believe we will beat Akwa United in the Charity Shield,” Udoh said in a radio interview. “We didn’t start the season well because we lost our Champions League game but we are determined not to make it two losses in a row,” he stated.

Udoh was missing due to injury as the People’s Elephants lost 1-0 to Vipers of Uganda in their preliminary round, first leg CAF Champions League tie last weekend, but he is however expected to be available for the game with Akwa.

The game pitches the league winners against the Federation’s Cup champions and is the first official game of the season before the start league hostilities.

Enyimba are up against Dolphins in Port Harcourt in their first league game of the season, while Akwa will be in Akure to face Sunshine Stars.

The game comes up at 4pm local time, while the league starts on the 21st
