Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Austin Tam-George, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to allow oil-producing states have full control of their oil resources.

Tam-George said the 1969 Petroleum Act, which vested the ownership of revenues from petroleum resources in the Federal Government, should be repealed.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the commissioner said the control of oil resources by the Federal Government was at variance with the spirit of true federalism.

While commending the anti-corruption war, Tam-George urged the Federal Government to also tackle ‘structural corruption’ in the country, alleging that the Federal Government was indirectly stealing from the Niger Delta.
He said, “We align with the Federal Government’s anti-corruption war but we are worried that structural corruption, which manifests in the inability of the Niger Delta states to control their oil resources, should be addressed. Seventy-four per cent of the national revenue disbursed to states comes from the Niger Delta, 20 per cent comes from the South-West, the remaining eight per cent is contributed by the South-East.

“The 1969 Petroleum Act has to be repealed. The control of oil resources by the Federal Government is a case of the state stealing from itself. This is structural corruption that must be checked. We are advocating that states should control their resources.”

Tam-George warned the All Progressives Congress against fomenting violence ahead of the legislative election reruns in Rivers State.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission says that it will be unbiased in the conduct of the March 19 election reruns coming up in the state.

INEC promised that it would conduct fair and credible poll reruns in the state.

The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, said this on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the commission in Port Harcourt.

Ikoiwak, who said he had supervised several elections in over 10 states, called on political parties and candidates to adhere to the electoral guidelines.

The REC promised that the commission would provide a level playing field for all the contestants in the elections.

He also urged the electorate not to vote if electoral materials were not available at the polling units on the day of the polls.

Menh the dwindling oil price is hitting hard on Wike & Co.
This is not the best of time to be an extravagant governor of an oil state as the 13% derivation accrued to the states is no longer well enough to be looted spuriously nor settle political patrons.

This is why I'd feel for those gullible supporters of the sensational Elitist. When the elites have much to eat, they are united in purpose and focus, when the equation does not favour them they will come to the street to shout marginalization and exploitation.

This table should tell you who/what regions are benefiting from ND oil money. SE will easily support this as they believe in freedom and autonomy but North and SW will never...this table explains who the real scavengers are. Tomorrow they will tell you Igbos want you for your oil...Lol! Sometimes I question the IQ of Niger Deltan people. Wake up ND!

Restructuring the system will engender solid foundation for real development.

Fiscal federalism or regional government is welcome but adopting 2014 national conference recommendations will go a long way to ensure fairness and justice.

It's a question of time till all these unworkable structural corruption be stopped and everybody will have to manage their own resources themselves. Nature has blessed every people with their own means of livelihood and survival; there's absolutely no nation or state without what it takes to live and thrive.

The Unitary Republic of Nigeria must be restructured to allow every state have total control over their own resources.

The worst form of corruption is when barren/lazy local government areas are created in one state using the resources from another state. That demonic structure us the greatest threat to the oneness and development of Nigeria.

Very soon, an entirely new , informed and aggressive movement will emerge from the SS that will either force this weak system to be restructured or seek outright secession from Nigeria as an entity.

The agitation from the SE and other simmering grievances will most likely snowball into something more daring in the coming years.

We need more leaders to speak to the corrupt people at the Northern Oligarchy that time is coming when everybody will answer their Papa name.

I am not against that but it will be difficult to achieve presently cos the establishment benefitting from 'one nigeria' will ensure it fails.

2014 National conference recommendations will be the best way to start then gradually work it up to regional government or resource control.

Wake-up man!
I support the man's stance 100%.
Honestly, anyone against states controlling their resources is just scared of working hard. Hard work pays more than anything. I'm a Yoruba man and I've always support states being self-dependent. Osun would definitely come out better, same to Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun. Even the Hausa states that seems the most scared will definitely see the benefit.
They should just ensure that 20% is remedied to the Federal Govt which the govt at the centre can use to maintain the military and integrity of the nation. But, you know definitely that the elites won't see easy money to steal again. And in all reality, Tam-George spoke well but its mainly because of the time and not because of his principal's love for his people.
I pray the dollar falls to $1=N1,000 so that we can disband the present demonic and corrupt structure we operate in Nigeria. May the LORD give us the will to do the right thing in JESUS NAME.

Nigeria will never work under this feeding bottle system.

my brother its easy to destroy than to build, when we had fiscal federalism working wonders in the 1960s, some wicked fellows because of their over ambition wrecked havoc by going on a killing spree, that was when our problem started, its so amazing now that the region where those over ambitious fellows came from are the ones yearning for the true federalism now. This is one of the major reason why that fiscal federalism looks so impossible now.

Maybe when the generation of all those who caused the havoc then including the ones from other regions finally pass away, just may be, we may try the fiscal federalism again but for now fiscal federalism is almost impossible due to hurts of the past.

you don't get my point, when they were the all in all in aso rock, why did they not enforce full resource control? This is what makes them bad politicians with no sense of diplomacy, its all about playing the victim and crying foul even when all is in their care and authority and finally it is the decisions that you are talking about that has landed them where they are now grin

You're very right that we are evil, myopic and selfish. The best we can do anyway is to move forward. Let's stop trading blames on ourselves. Let's clamor for true federalism. I know some weaklings will think some states will be worse off without federal allocation. But, let such weaklings be strong. Nature has blessed us big time and we must know that when we are left on our own, we always come out smarting.
Let's support fiscal federalism and stop the blame game.

True Federalism is the only thing that will lift us out of this rot we find our selves today. Governor will look inwards and do a comparative analysis of that which they are better off and invest into it. It will also bring more regional integration because states will like to compete favourably with those in their regions And also states will pursue investments where they are better in and support the other states on that which they don't have comparative advantage.

Lagos provides about 15 of that 20% and Igbos have more than half of that Lagos input.

Add that to the stuff coming from Igbo areas of the Niger delta and you will come to the realisation that Igbos and Igboids contribute more than 50% of what accrues to the centre
