Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, may be the next top profile government official to lose his job, Ripples can authoritatively confirm.

Top presidential aides confided on Monday that the dragnet is drawing closer to Emefiele, who was appointed as head of the nation’s apex bank by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 3, 2014.

Emefiele replaced Mallam Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano, who was controversially suspended and fired by Jonathan for alleged insubordination.

But the CBN chief has been in the eye of the storm lately following revelations that the nation’s treasury was practically emptied to fund the failed re-election bid of Jonathan in 2015.

Emefiele, investigators alleged, granted government officials unfettered access to the treasury during the electioneering period and even printed new currencies when the vault was drained.

Many people expected President Muhammadu Buhari to have fired the bank’s chief following his alleged involvement in the infamous Dansukigate scandal, but a top presidential aide said Buhari decided otherwise, to strike at the best time.

The president can remove the CBN governor by an address to the senate stating the governor has been found guilty of gross misconduct and of course, with the approval of two third of members of the senate.

If this news is true, PMB should please appoint an Economist as the new CBN governor. We don't need another deposit money bank MD as CBN governor at this point in time. We need a governor that can think through monetary policies before deciding on them.

Buhari cannot just sack the CBN governor like that.. There are constitutional approach to doing that which will require the cooperation of other arms of government..
I still wonder what Emefiele is doing as CBN giv under the senseless ruler who understands nada about the economy? If not now maybe later before Buhari disgraces him..

Buhari can't sack him because buhari and his economic team have no clue or solution to our economic problems. By default emefiele will try to suspend the economy in the air for a while while buhari and his economic team provide a cushion under it, then he let's it down.

Unfortunately, emefiele has been holding the economy up for so long waiting for buhari them to put the cushion under it, but they are running helter-skelter. Emefiele's hands have become swollen, tired and weak. He is playing the role of a goal keeper in the post without his team mates, the opponents are firing shots at him left right and center scoring anyhow.

Soon he will drop the economy(devalue naira without diversification ) and Nigerians will cry.

Let him do it and receive the hammer of the IMF. The office of the Governor of the apex bank of any nation is an autonomous position acting as a representative of the IMF and World Bank in all the respective nation members of the IMF. Just like the NFF, the president has no legal backing to sack and hire the individuals heading this institutions. Emefiele has a tenure of four or five years, the president can only swallow the bitter pill and work with him, or do the impossible and risk turning this nation into an island. But of course, the president is a Nepa certificate holder surrounded by phools
