Way forward is to give engineering technologists a chance at civil service and local government services commissions, that is when we would have our respect

The government started it they must also end it. Once they know our value we will be scarce, so they will have to pay higher fee to employ us. In as much as we say no Job and Engineering Technologist start to look for Job in the Bank then they can give him rubbish or outright REJECTION

What you said might not be correct because it is not all polytechnic students/graduates that are good academically and pratically. Some university graduates (not all) are better than some polytechnic graduates (not all) academically and practically; and some polytechnic graduates (not all) are better than some university graduates (not all) academically and pratically. so don't conclude that all polytechnic gradutes are better than university graduates practically or academically. It depends on the individual.

You are right o bros. Polytechnic education in Nigeria is obsolete; University education is in vogue now with enough advantages. So even if you are dull and you go to a university you stand ahead of a brilliant polytechnic graduate in the society, na wa oo!!

You can do a PGD and MSc; that will give you an edge over people with only Bsc. With your MSc you can even become a Lecturer in the university and be doing your PhD.

Yes PGD did the magic for me. The professional masters after HND are just waste of money, PGD is a repairer of HND.

Polytechnics should be allowed to run MTech in Engineering Technology thats all. so that after your HND or BTech you can proceed to do your MTech.

Thank you. The system was change by FEC but tampered with by a Director Just a director changed what was done. So it is all in the hand of the New minister. Please HND is not good for anybody. The seminar should be how to spend money. What do you think?

HND certificate is not a problem. It is the society that has made it look like a problem. after all a lot of us passed through the polytechnic and are holders of the HND certificate; and we are doing well atleast.

Grant Polytechnics Degree Awarding Status – ASUP
From Wole Ayodele in Lokoja, 05.04.2007

www.thisdayonline.com
Kogi

The Federal Polytechnic, Idah Chapter, has appealed to the Federal Government to grant degree awarding status to Polytechnics with the required infrastructures and manpower, as it is being practiced in Europe and some African countries, following scrapping of the award of Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate by Polytechnics and the subsequent merger of some with universities for the award of Bachelor of Technology Degree, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), said.
In a press release signed by Chairman of the Union, Engineer Danjuma Ocheja Attah, the Union decried the total abolition of polytechnics, and its merger with Universities, stressing that “some of the universities are not better than some polytechnics in the area of facilities.”
According to ASUP, abolition of polytechnics will have adverse effects on the technological development of the country, noting that it is unwise for a developing country like Nigeria to do away with an institution established to play pivotal roles in its technological advancement.
Citing the example of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, which has been merged with the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, the Union emphasised that the polytechnic has more facilities and manpower that could transform it into a full-fledged University of Technology instead.
“The Federal Polytechnic, Idah, has the required infrastructure and manpower to facilitate its transformation to a full-fledged University of Technology, and one has to commend the Rector, Professor Joseph Ndanusa Egila, for his foresight and attention to the development of both academic and infrastructure, as this has placed the institution ahead of other Polytechnics in the country.” Expressing ASUP’s displeasure, Attah said “ASUP is totally against the decision and will do its best to ensure polytechnics retain its status.”
On the running of humanity based courses by Polytechnics, the Union stated that running humanity based courses by Polytechnics has not in any way affected the main objectives for which they were established, adding that polytechnics have lived up to expectation in their core areas of mandate.

Give the Polytechnics a Chance

The nation's economy can only be developed through the creation of entrepreneurs through the evolution of a sound technical education policy. This was the view of Professor Salawu, a professor of Electrical-Electronic Engineering at the University of Lagos. He also canvassed the elimination of all known social stigmas that have been making the choice of careers in technical education unattractive to Nigerian youths.

He maintained that technical education remains the only panacea to the resuscitation of the nation's ailing economy. He called on the Federal Government to step up measures reviewing the tertiary educational system to correct the imbalance between graduates of Polytechnics and Universities.

As a way of encouraging youths who are artisans in the informal sector, he suggested an intervention process to provide a form of skills' improvement strategy and retraining for them.

Nigerian Institute Of Technologists in Engineering want the government to undertake a total review of the tertiary educational system to correct the imbalance in production and expenditure between middle-level technical manpower and university professional graduates.

The salaries of Polytechnics and Universities should be harmonised so that there will be movement from one to the other. This will make it easy for Polytechnics to attract good quality workers.

Annual competition on innovation and inventions leading to awards for inventions.

A policy to take care of the informal sector such that artisans are periodically retrained to continually improve their skills, and additional allowance for technical subject teachers in secondary schools to attract more qualified teachers into the field. If all these are done, entrepreneurs would not only be created, unemployment would also be greatly reduced.
