“May peace and blessings of God be upon you.

First of all, the news has reached us that a young man called Yunusa who hails from Kura local government had gone to Bayelsa and met a young girl called Ese Oruru, who voluntarily reverted to Islam and showed interest in marrying him, but her parents had objected to it and had threatened to kill her. She opted to follow Yunusa to his village and marry him.

Because of the sensitivity of the issue, which involves minors, we decided to hand the case to the authorities. The authorities did a good job. They investigated the matter and established facts about the girl that she was 15 years old and concluded that she needed protection.

At the tender age of 15 years, this girl was too young to get married. We therefore decided that she must be returned back to her parents. If the young man truly loves her, he could wait until she reaches the age of 18 and then marry her. Meanwhile, there is no provision in Islam that severs her relationship with her parents simply because she has reverted into Islam.

To cut long story short, we contacted our AIG with the matter, who then contacted the AIG in Bayelsa and a decision was unanimously made to return her back to her parents. Adequate measures were also taken to guarantee her safety and security. After six months passed we did a situation check and found that all was well with Ese Oruru and nobody could therefore accuse us of abdicating from our parental and leadership responsibilities.

Then suddenly from nowhere, we received this disturbing news that has gone viral on Internet and social media platforms accusing us of unlawfully detaining this girl. Even Senators are getting involved into the foray for cheap propaganda. This is clearly a mischievous attempt to tarnish the image of our people and religion.

A recent situation check showed that the girl at her own volition had decided to leave her parents home once more and come to stay with the young man Yunusa, without our knowledge and the knowledge of the authorities.”

CUPS remarks: The CUPS organisation was inundated with messages and calls asking us to write a report on this matter, which we did. We took our time to investigate the matter as far as we could possibly go. This caused a bit of delay in publishing our report. Nonetheless, some people felt that our delay in publishing is because we were protecting Northern/Muslim interest in the matter, which is totally untrue! Meanwhile some people on the opposite side of the argument felt that we should never have published the report at all.

This is one of those unfortunate contentious and divisive national issues that nobody comes out a winner. If you report on it you are damned and if you fail to report you are still damned.

The fact remains true that there are hundreds of thousands or even millions of Ese Orurus up and down the country who are abandoned by their parents and are either forced into child labour or prostitution. Our research shows that shows that 43% of our girls are married off before they reach the age of 18. Meanwhile 17% of them are married before they turn 15 years old. The hypocritical Nigerian media are less perturbed by their plight. They are more interested in publishing politically sponsored news and propaganda on behalf of the manifestly corrupt politicians who are determined to subjugate us to perpetual destitution.

Meanwhile, because of political expediency, the Ese Oruru's story was hijacked, twisted over its head and made viral with the sole intent of causing harm to his Royal Highness the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi and his constituency.

What a shame!

May God save Nigeria and Nigerians. Amen.

Nonsense. Who wants to tarnish the image of ur religion or tribe? Something you started tarnishing a long time ago and you are still tarnishing as I speak.
Thank God for social media.
