Your car has spoken already "check hybrid system" no other language than this. First thing you need to do is run a comprehensive scan on your powertrain, vsc, and all other control units installed on this car. If you need a solution to the problem and you are in lagos call 08156087872 or 08165520837. Bbpin is 7BE1C522

In Nigeria for now, hybrid is a NO-NO. When our car dealerships start selling hybrids, that's the time to buy them!!!

As much as I respect you on this forum OGA me, hybrid in Nigeria is a yes yes for me. Infact we need hybrid in lagos due to traffic.

I have an estate neighbour using his camry 07-12 hybrid now for more than 4years without hiccup.

My land lady in the university has been using her hybrid highlander an illetrate for that matter for 2 years + without hiccup

A new neighbour in my estate just moved in and uses two hybrid cars not other engine variant, a 2nd gen prius and an hybrid ford escape 1st gen very clean, drives the prius more as an everyday car.

My brother inlaw almost bought a 2008 camry hybrid LE with solid leather interior and out of this world dash with thumb start for 1.8M, I just advised him to continue using his well maintained accord DC and only look for for small car for his wife.

would I buy an hybrid, yes and also look for a competent engineer to help with maintenance and repair.

Don't get me wrong, I love hybrid vehicles and have owned 2 hybrid vehicles (but would only drive them on warranty periods).

hybrid batt packs and inverters are expensive and must be shipped independently. If you are lucky to get a good hybrid car without issues lucky you. If it has issues, no one will make a decent offer for the car. Most people rather give it out as a gift to a relation instead of fixing or selling.

i know this thread has been a while but i have a few comments/question for you @matharaz,

What issue did you have with the car that led to replacement of cylinder gasket?

Did you scan the vehicle for any DTC codes at the time when the issue occurred?

Can you describe what the behavior of the car at the time was?

After the replacement of the top cylinder gasket, did the vehicle start at all, before starting to display “Check hybrid system”

If you continue to try and start the car, then you will run down the 12V battery as well as the HV battery.

As a way to troubleshoot, use a simple multimeter and read the voltage of the 12v battery, if its above 12.3 volts, then it still has some good juice in it. Should that be the case, your best play will be to put the car in ACC mode and use a scan tool (you can get a bluetooth scanner at the least) to scan the vehicle for any DTC codes. With such codes, then you will have a better idea of what hybrid system component may have failed.

Note that when you try to pull these codes with the car in ACC mode using a scanner, a lot of other communication error codes will be displayed, but what you want to look for are "hybrid system" related codes like failed hybrid battery or lost communication with hybrid component or wiring harness issues, you may disregard all other error codes displayed in the scanner at this point until the car can start. The hybrid system error is what is stopping the car from starting.

That said, based on the information you provided, it is possible that your initial trouble with the car may have been a
‘hybrid system” issue which could have been caused by a faulty sensor, HV battery or related component or short in wiring harness. I don’t know the level of troubleshooting that you did prior to going ahead to changing the cylinder gasket but the lesson here is to get a scanner so that you can have details of whats going on.

Thanks @inkefor. Still on the troubleshooting process I discovered some of the battery cells (HV) were not working and producing less than 5vs. Am looking to get new once for replacement. But I don't have a clue on how to get them. Any useful information will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Truth be told; most of the technicians claiming to understand & fix hybrid cars in Nigeria do that by trial & error. Owners of such hybrid cars spend more money than they anticipated searching for solution.

Majority of spare parts dealers don't stock hybrid spare parts. To source for their parts in Nigeria, you have to expend an enormous amount of energy to get them. Not everyone has the capacity to import spare parts. To import the parts implies that you must have other cars to use while waiting for the parts to arrive. When the parts eventually arrive, the machanic who will fix the parts will charge a leg & an arm because it's a specialised vehicle.

In the event that the inverter systems requires an overhaul, the gains in fuel will be eroded completely.

Are hybrid cars good? Yes but currently, the system in Nigeria does not support their use. I could own one as part of a fleet but not as a lone car. A few owners may have been lucky to use theirs for a few years with no hitch but once the system starts to fail, they will tell a horrifying stories of hybrid ownership.

Again, nobody has discouraged anybody from the ownership of a hybrid but you need to weigh your options against the realities of ownership of regular cars in terms of spare parts availability, technical know-how etc. Fuel consumption is not the only yardstick when purchasing a car.
