An outbreak of a mysterious disease accompanied with severe fever and non-stop diarrhoea suspected to have been allegedly caused by poisoned food has killed 4 students of Government Unity Secondary School Gummi (GUSSG) of Zamfara state while another 19 were reported badly infected. A competent source close to the school told Peoples Daily that initially, two students woke up early hours of last Saturday in severe fever then followed by stomach ache that eventually led to the persistent diarrhoea, the development has generated more threat as the number of infected students increased to 19 on the following Sunday. “We have witnessed 4 infected students die at early hours of Sunday even before they were taken to hospital, the situation which threw the entire school into panic and the rate of suspicion on the health of other students has grown fast”, the source informed. A source close to the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Gusau who did not want his name in print confirmed the incidence, saying that 5 badly infected students who were conveyed in by the state ministry of health were admitted at an isolated ward, while medical experts embarked upon investigations to identify the disease. Responding in a press conference, the state Commissioner of Information, Umar Jibo Bukkuyum, dismissed the allegation, saying the badly infected students were only five and were already admitted in the FMC in effort to arrest the situation. Bukkuyum further disagreed with the
allegation that the mysterious disease
was emanated from taking foods
suspected to be poisoned under
preservation methods, adding that, “It
was just a disaster and the state government has since embarked upon
steps to ensure that the disease is not
spread, to cap it all, the school has
been closed”.
