Your Mothers, Sisters, Daughters Will Benefit From Gender Equality Bill- NAWOJ by neolboy(m): 1:20pm On Mar 20, 2016 |
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ) has expressed with displeasure the recent rejection of the Gender Equality Bill by the Senate. It would be recalled that senators who rejectedthe bill cited constitutional and religious violations. Ifeyinwa Omowole, NAWOJ National President, said it is further disheartening that this is the third time that the National Assembly would be rejecting similar bills seeking equity for women. ”In view of the many advantages of this bill, It is the position of NAWOJ that the relevant sections of the constitution be amended to allow for the bill to be passed,” she said in a statement at the weekend. ”If the constitution could be amended to accommodate political issues, then the 8th National Assembly can amend the constitution to accommodate women who are their mothers, their sisters and their daughters. NAWOJ hailed the sponsor of the Bill, Sen. Biodun Olujimi for being a worthy representative of the women in Nigeria. It also commended all other women and the few men who supported the bill,.NAWOJ particularly thanked the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for his “visible support” of the bill, urging him to use his good office to lobby his colleagues on its importance. The group called on all women groups to be actively involved in sensitizing Nigerians especially lawmakers. In conclusion, the statement noted: ”The Gender Equality Bill is not a battle of the sexes;it is not a bill that removes the submissiveness of women to their husbands neither is it a bill that seeks to erode the responsibility of the woman in her home. “It only seeks to give the woman more opportunity to assist herself and the man in the home. It is a bill that benefits the man even more than the woman.” source:http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/20/gender-equality-bill-your-mothers-sisters-daughters-will-benefit-nawoj-tells-opposing-senators/ |
