Let me start by asking for prior forgiveness for any mistake you might come across in this story. This is my first story and I must confess that I'm still a novice in this area of writing.

I shall welcome every constructive criticism and correction.

CHAPTER ONE

It was a very cool and atmospheric morning on December 4th, 2010. Adekunle (popularly called 'Igi Iwe' by his friends) was graduating alongside his course mates from the department of Purchasing and Supply Management, in the Polytechnic of Illinois, illinois state, Nigeria.

The conference hall of Illinois Polytechnic had totally been filled before 8am and there were no chairs for those who came late to sit. Illinois Polytechnic multipurpose hall is one of the most magnificent structures that the school has to boast off. The hall was built during the military era and the contract of the building project was given to a german construction company who was said to have done a very excellent job on the building. Stories had it that it took the contractor ten good years to finish the project because of the complexity, the high-tech design, as well as series of changes and alterations occasioned by change in taste of the clients (the school management) and some government policies.

It was a great feet for Adekunle as he was graduating as the second best student in his department. He had narrowly escaped a carry-over in one of his last semester courses - PASS 911. He had gotten just 40/100 in the course. It was told that almost 50 percent of the students in his department failed the course. his CPGA that had stood at 4.80 before the last semester examination but plummeted to 4.51 - a status quo occasioned by the ridiculous score he had in the said course.

"I'm graduating with distinction anyway," Adekunle comforted himself. He was however saddened about the fact that he was graduating as the second best. He had wanted to be the best graduating student in his department and even in the whole campus if possible. The twist of event at the very end of his program had shattered his dream.

"I will never forgive Dr. Ajekale," Adekunle uttered. "How could a human be so inhumane? Little wonder no organization is ready to give him a research grant for many of his research proposals. Who knows? It could have been the head of one of those students whom he failed that is hunting and standing against him. that serves him right and would continue to" Adekunle asserted.

The convocation started proper at exactly 10am. The best graduands were called to podium and gifts were presented to them. As a normal ritual, the overall best graduating student, Olajumoke, who happened to be from Adekunle's department, bagged ten awards and had a hand-shake with the governor.

Thereafter, the graduands were charged by the Rector of the institution to be good ambassadors of the institution and they were urged to continue to exhibit the excellent and exemplary trait; even as they have done on campus. The official program was declared ended at exactly 4pm; and each graduand went to his/her family members who he/she had invited to the event; and they took pictures and celebrate the feet with food, goodies and some other things they had brought.

And there was a twist of event! Just right there - in the midst of friends and family shouting and celebrating the success of their sons and daughters; Adekunle remembered something! Something that had given him a lot of sleepless nights. And errm...............

CHAPTER TWO

ADEKUNLE THOUGHT ABOUT LIFE AFTER SCHOOL

"To every new height in life, they say; there is always a new responsibility." Adekunle realized that he had gotten to a stage of life where he had to cater for his own needs himself. While other graduands were having nice time celebrating their graduation out of the four walls; Adekunle was thinking of how and were to begin his journey into the labour market and subsequently the corporate world.

"There are no white collar jobs anymore!" He had heard people say. Just some days before the convocation, he had watched a news aired on one of the local channels where the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC) was said to have published the latest unemployment rate figure and it was said to have sky rocketed by fifty percent. He knew things were getting worst and the competition in the labour market would be so much fierce.

Well, the sudden change in Adekule's countenance is very understandable; he had a lot of burdens to shoulder. Being the first born in the family of six, he had old parents and siblings to look after.

It was just by providence that Adekunle graduated from school because his parents had nothing. His finance through school had been through number of loans that his parents obtained from different banks.

His siblings had also put their own education to temporary halt so their parents could have enough for Adekunle's needs. Adekunle had vowed to make up for all his family's effort; but the reality starring at him made everything a mere mirage.

"Adekunle!" A voice called out from the celebrating croud. Adekunle got tensed up due to the present state of his mind. He turn quickly to the direction of the voice as though he were a thief that had just been caught in the very act of stealing.

He move towards the direction and he saw a feminine hand waiving at his direction. It was olajumoke, the lady that got his dreamed position- overall best graduating student. Olajumoke saw his coutenance and asked him what was wrong. He narrated his ordeal to her and tears were almost running through his eyes. Olajumoke pacified him and assured him that there is a bright future ahead.

Adekunle and Olajunmoke walked to where their friends were gathered after their discussion. They all rocked the rest of the day together and everyone left when they day became dark.
