can 1 with a Nigerian degree in chemistry hons study radiography/industrial radiography..... and pls what d difference btw radiography and radiology. + requirements and how long....? duo am well grounded in nuclear science... ur answers wud be highly appreciated

From you comment radiography would be most probable for you. To do radiology you would first require a medical degree but to do radiography you may just be able to get into a programme directly using you previous degree in nuear sciences as a springboard.

I won't be explaining anything about radiography cos I am not a radiographer. I have said that explicitly. I am very experienced in this area of medicine cos its my everyday doing. If you had asked me to explain about radiation medicine and radiology then its a different issue cos thats what I know but the technicalities of the equipement eludes me cos I didnt learn that in school and I repeat I am not a radiographer.
What the young ones should go home with is this. When in doubt ask a more experienced hand. Also pls let no one deceive you to tell you that radiologists dont oversee the works radiographers. It is a lie, radiologist oversee radiographers. What the radiographer should find out is what kind of doctor is that because the law only allows radiologists that right and not any kind of doctor.
Imagine a cardiologist overseeing a radiographer?
The.next thing they should remember is that no one person knows it all. Doctors are human being and make mistakes too.
Lastly because both professions are related they should.learn to leave together and try not to step on eachothers feet.
Dr. Noel, this an enlightening post. As I've said in my earlier posts, Doctors will generally lead a procedure or a medical team. In addition a doctor must recommend what views are needed. The radiographer is not to state what views or procedures are necessary. There is nothing wrong in a Doctor or a specialist doctor LEADING a radiographer

sir I practice in Luth and I tell you those examinations you mentioned are examinations that are carried out once in a blue moon with the exception of angiography and you sounded like the examinations were meant to be done by you .do away with your pride and realize that patient diagnosis doesn't rely solely on you again..nowadays doctors only make assumptions and send request forms that makes you wonder how lazy they have become!!

There you misunderstand me again. I told you what radiologist in europe and Ameria do. And yes those examinations I meantioned, I do them myself. Not cos the rsdiographers can do better or similar after all I learnt from one of them when I was still green around the ears. But cos some cases are so unclear that one.may have to do it oneself to have a clearer picture.

This thread is being derailed by some over sabi doctors. I don't think the op opened this thread to prove who is more superior between radiologists and radiographers, feel free to open another thread for that contest.
For now let's stick to enlightening the millions out there especially our jambites who can still benefit from the untapped potentials in Medical Radiography.

am sure you meant me. no vex. I will try and add information where I can after all we are all here to learn.

Nowadays in Nigeria, where the course is now been offered only at the universities, I guess you're right. But, you'll have to consult the JAMB requirements.

One question, there is a radiology course that leads to a diploma in medical radiology and imaging, offered in colleges of health technologies. Would this qualify one to be a radiographer? ?

Of course if there is any error in my posts that can be pointed out on Nairaland, please do not hesitate to throw light. But when you thought that you can confuse us with special procedures, you are seeing how your claims are being debunked and corrected.
I noticed the usual arrogance in your posts before your declaring you're a radiologist. I can't ascertain to your qualifications but am glad you are in agreement that a radiologist is not a radiographer, and one could face criminal and negligent charges in a law court. Medical Associations and Registration Councils have exerted ultimate penalties on medical officers even here in Nigeria. You may know of some examples during the time of Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti as Nigeria's longest serving health minister.

Yes I heard about such cases. Ofcos I am in agreement afterall both radiography and radiology are similar and its all for the benefit of the patient. I have once ordered an examination before and given explicit order how it should be done only for my radiographer on call to come to my office and disrupt my work saying what I ordered wont work. I almost grew a horn, I was mad and didn't hesitate to tell him that. I even threatened to report him to their chief radiographer. The youngman refused to do that investigation so I didn't it myself and ran into so difficulties. I had to swallow my pride and called him. He came and we solved it together. After that exmaination I learnt humility, it was then he explained to me that it was not that he didnt want to do the examinations but that he had had similar difficulty for the same examination and had found out that the hospital protocol for that investigation was wrong that if only I have relaxed and listened to him....
After that day, I listened to all the radiographers esp when they came to.me for something.

No. School of Health Tech trains darkroom technicians, the truth is that they are gradually being phased out with the advent of digital radiography.
I learnt some instuitions in the north because of the shortage of hands are awarding some "diplomas" but this is quackery and won't get u registered.
The recognized Universities offering radiography today are Unilag, UNN, UNICAL and Unimaid. To the best of my knowledge

I am not a radiographer or a paramedic. But as you can see in this post, the USA has courses given different nomenclature in different years of study.
The core radiography course is three years. What differs is the point where you are deemed qualified to engage in the program. So the course you mentioned above may be radiography or leading to radiography.
I'm not sure. So one would have to asked pointedly from the school if one can qualify to take the licencing exams after the course.
There is presently only one straight forward way in Nigeria to enter the profession, and that's by getting a degree. I'm not familiar with how the Radiographers Registration Council is facilitating the training of radiographers, but one can find out.
See here, I just googled it:
RADIOGRAPHERS REGISTRATION BOARD OF NIGERIA, FEDERAL SECRETARIAT, PHASE II, YABA, LAGOS STATE

i conclude your knowledge of RADIOGRAPHY is very shallow. Radiographers are not and will never be supervised by Radiologist. Radiographers concern themselves with producing the best representation of the patient (image) and radiologist concern themselves with interpretation of the image.. Nobody bosses nobody.
full private diagnostic centres have Chief Radiographers as the overall head.
Next time don't speak out of ignorance or the reflex to speak nonsense.

My understanding of radiography is shallow but your understanding of radio-medicine and the radiography you promote is non existent. Ask me about radiology ok? Of course you do not know me, so be it. Find out from Dr. Mgboh and all those who worked under late Prof. Onwurah, both of them eminent world standard and pioneering radio diagnosticians in Nigeria. At the moment I employ 3 ppl like u who are happier than u.

I am self employed and i'm loving it. Even when i'm sleeping my cash is running errands for me yet your so called radiographer will wake up and go to work else he won't get paid.

How many radiographers are employers? from what you posted here, they are all employees

You're a lucky man. Stay on your enterprising entrepreneur. Many are wishing to be what you are and many have crashed out of their entrepreneurial endeavours.
But about 30 percent of new radiographers will work on their own, while 45 of the experienced ones are on their own. Personal Observations.

Part 3
Radiographers are not all fat salary earners. However, the opportunities to achieve your short term and long term goals abound.
The opportunities begin with recognition given to them. Notice how radiographers Youth Corpers are treated during the service year. They are most likely to be give accommodation by the authorities whether in the city or in a remote village! Even Doctor Corpers may end up having to fend for himself. Am not sure of nurses.
Other opportunities are from the fact that their services are perpetually in demand whereas the personnel are always few. Even where a lab technician or an expert radiologist is present, and they know how to carry out every diagnostic procedure, they MUST NOT carry out any radiographic diagnostic procedure unless by that qualified radiographer.

The cost of an education in radiography is the same as medical lab tech or science. The practice is guarded and regulated by an association of radiographers with a radiographers registration council. This means every radiographer is documented and licenced to practice radiography in Nigeria. This of course has resulted in a well protected profession in Nigeria and all over the world. Not all radiographers have to practice in an hospital environment. There are consultants, administrators, educators and other assignments to be taken up. All of this people MUST be licenced radiographers.
Radiography practice is also gender friendly and gender neutral. There is no bias often associated with engineering, aircraft pilots or nursing.

So while many are busy crying about job hunting, job insecurity waisted number of years searching for employment, admissions or traveling abroad just consider radiography, a profession often overlooked because it remains relatively unknown.

Radiography does not enjoy an exclusivity on this. No qualified actuarial science person is jobless. Professionally qualified and certified actuaries are less 5 or so in the country.
It's easier for a Carmel to pass through an eye of a needle than for Nigerian youths to be an actuary To be just an associate you must pass 5 toughest of the toughest exams viz probability finance etc plus some classes Nigerian youths generally greedy for money have no time for such tough exams check it out soa.org

-At your age you should sit down on this forum and learn from the OP. It's called open education. It's free. When you have an opportunity to learn you don't bother yourself with what others are doing on that platform, neither is there a need to question their motives, because that will be like taking PANADOL for someone's else's headache. If you keep this your mindset as expressed in your post above you'll become bereft forever!

-I believe presently you have not achieved any serious academic success. From a record of your activities of your posts on Nairaland, you've not been contributing to serious minded professional discussions which means that your general knowledge is still in the development stage. So this thread is not a place for you to pass judgements and waste your MB. This is a place for you to ask questions and thank the contributors for the insight they freely and openly give to you.

You don't even know what allegories are! Hear your ARMHARETIC statement that I have copied out from your post:
"Drs still rock anyways. Be a Dr, or say, marry a Dr bro, its healthy" If this is what you have for Nigerian youths and Nairalanders, then may you be confined to the Dustin of History with ignominy!
BTW, Please don't talk about doctors, because they will cringe at the assertions you have just made about them.

Radiographers and other radiation workers are working with radiation from a position of knowledge. They will hardly ever be exposed to harmful doses because they take precaution. Note also that the amount of radiation that a patient will be exposed to, for diagnostic purposes is negligible. Even for therapeutic purposes, the doses are controlled to the particular are in the body.
So you never will hear of a radiologist or radiographer having cancer, or other types of radiation sickness. However, the rest if us don't even want to bother about such radiation issues, because in our minds, the harmful effects of radiation doesn't exist!

However, if your profession is working for you why jump from pilar-to-post! Remember that many have been frustrated out of this course for many reasons: some include the fact that they do not love that type of work because it doesn't appeal to them.
Continue in your field if you can not stand the rigor of training in theory and clinical practice
