I see that this answer has already been comprehensively answered by many, but I'll try to add my own standpoints.I'm a resident of Federal University Of Agriculture, Abeokuta Umar Kabir Hall

The biggest advantage-the cosmopolitan nature of the environment. It's literally a melting pot for people of all stratas of society. Now being raised at home for the previous 16 years of my life, hostel was uncharted territory for me. As aptly pointed out, hostels have a way of becoming your second home,I won't be exaggerating if I say that it has gone on to become the first home for many of my seniors. You see,you forge certain bonds with your mates-strong enough that you become connected forever.

Now the advantages:

1.Boredom isn't a problem.

Trust me on this one.You will NEVER EVER get bored. There is always something or the other going on-be it someone (un)fortunate enough to get "birthday bombs" or something as normal as a mundane conversation escalating into a free-for-all debate into CR7 v LM10.

2.You get to know people.

Chances are, like me you've never been away from home. So it's a refreshing change from the monotony when you meet and befriend new kinds of people with different lifestyles, habits and cultures. It is only then do you realise the true ethnic and cultural expanse of Indian society.

3.You hone your social skills.

Though personally I wasn't socially awkward,I've witnessed many of my fellow mates overcome their initial pangs of self doubt and shyness after being thrust into this wild hotch potch kaleidoscopic amalgamation of humanity.

4.Healthy competition.

Since engineering(of any kind) is no cakewalk, and you'll need to put in lots of efforts to shine, healthy competition goes a long way into ensuring that you are upto your daily tasks.

5.Group study.

Whether you're accustomed to it not, this will save your skin on many occasions. The human brain is hard-wired to better retain facts when studying in a cognitive and interactive environment.I can personally vouch for this.I was convinced that I would flunk Mechanics. However just 2 days before the exam,we have this guy-he's somewhat of a legend in our circle as far as grasp on Mechanics goes.He tutored us for 2 days and I kid you not-I attempted 98 marks in the Mechanics paper.

6.Resource sharing.

No,I'm not talking about about distributed network terminals,I'm talking about the times whenever you feel hungry there will be at least 2-3 guys with something or the other to eat. :p Same goes for other stuff, you'll never run out of anything(except maybe privacy.lol.)

7.Management skills.

No longer are you that pampered kid. You'll live on a monthly budget. You'll learn to manage your money, learn not to buy anything that catches your eye and also take proper care of your own health.

Hostel life has it's fair share of cons too, though personally, those are relatively few.

1. As I mentioned earlier if you're more of a hush hush person with your clandestine quotient giving the CIA a run for his money, you'll have a hard time adjusting to hostel life.

2.There will be countless times when you'll be rudely interrupted in the midst of your study sessions. You're all "zoned in" belching out code furiously when your friend comes bursting in-"Bhai mera pornhub nahi khul raha".(Bro I can't seem to access PornHub).Go figure.

3.Mess food.If you're a foodie-RIP tastebuds! Do you know that every engineering college hostels have their fair share of "ghost stories".The scariest-you said it-mess food!Except on those rare occasion it actually feels like food, you'll have a hard time downing them.

PS-I would've mentioned bad habits like taking drugs, but that has nothing to do with hostels. If you think you won't smoke-and put your heart to it-you won't. Period. No one will force you.If you think you will, there's no stopping you-even at home. That's the bare truth.

Hostel life is arguably the best 4 years of your life.Grow out of your shell, rediscover yourself and chill!
