– The Nigerian army on Monday, May 30, said it prevented an attack on an AGIP pipleine by some militants

– One personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps was shot during the attack

– The army said it has organized a mop up team to find some of the escapee militant

The Nigerian army on Monday, May 30, said it averted a pipeline attack with Gulobokri and Eweleso, around Brass area of Bayelsa state.

A statement by the director of army public relation, Sani Usman said some troops of 343 artillery regiment of 2 brigade, 82 division of the Nigerian army during a patrol in the area prevented the attack.

Usman said, the troops during the patrol had an encounter with some armed militants in two different speed boats.

He said the militants had the intention of blowing up Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) pipeline at Gulobokri when they were accosted by troops of the Nigerian army.

“The suspected vandals opened fire on the patrol team, the troops responded with overwhelming superior firepower and as a result, the suspected criminals sped off from the area with many of them sustaining gunshot wounds. No casualty on the patrol team,” Usman said.

“Unfortunately, a personnel of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to the team sustained gunshot wound. He has since been evacuated and he is in a stable condition,” he said.

Usman also said another patrol team from the same 82 division encountered three speed boats suspected to be carrying militants along Perigbene House Boat (HB) to attack a facility.

“The troops opened fire on them, killing most of them and injuring others. However, the casualty on militants cannot be ascertained as it was raining heavily and the raging storm could not allow troops to go on pursuit of the escaping criminals,” he said.

He said a mop up operation has been organized by the army to search for the escapee militants and those with gunshot wounds.

Since the advent of the Niger Delta Avengers, several pipeline have been attacked.

However, renowned militant, Government Ekpempuolo, alias Tompolo has called all the Niger Delta Avengers to desist from destroying pipeline in the South south region.
