The fact is innocent lives were lost which is wrong on de part of the army but at the same time the protest cannot all be classified as innocent since the lives of 2 policemen were lost which clearly proves that some supporters were actually armed and dangerous which permits de brutal use of force by security forces... In summary, in any battle there is always collateral damage... Sad though for the families of those affected but it could have been easily avoided if they hadn't gone out. Yes peaceful protest is a fundamental right but be warned not every protester is prepared to be as peaceful as you. So be careful else you die for what somebody else has committed.

The attention of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army has been drawn to a planned release of report by Amnesty International on the recent violent activities by IPOB and MASSOB on 31st May 2016 in which they were alleging that the Nigerian Army planned the killing of the protesters. This is not true but the usual calculated attempt to rubbish the Security forces in particular and the Nigerian Army just to remain relevant.

It should be noted that the Non-governmental organization has always been of the habit of being the judge and jury in matters of our national security without recourse to fairness, objectivity, all aimed at rubbishing the Nigerian Army for reasons best known to them. This could not be far from trying albeit unsuccessfully to be relevant and justify funding.

For the avoidance of doubt, what transpired that fateful day was that some elements of MASSOB/IPOB engaged in violent protests which led to outright breakdown of law and order. The pro-Biafra protesters who had chosen the day to mark the 50th Anniversary of Biafra perpetrated a number of unimaginable atrocities to unhinge the reign of peace, security and stability in several parts of Anambra State. A number of persons were selected for attack, killed and burnt. Two personnel of the Nigeria Police were killed, several soldiers were wounded, a Nigeria Police vehicle was completely burnt down while another of the Nigerian Army was vandalized. The strategic Niger Bridge at Onitsha was at the verge of being captured particularly with the coordinated reinforcement of the violent protesters from the Asaba end of the Bridge. In addition, wanton destruction of lives and properties were brazenly carried out by the protesters who employed firearms, crude weapons as well as other volatile cocktails such as acid and dynamites. In consequence, law, order and security were grossly threatened across the State and beyond.

The Nigerian Army in synergy with other security agencies under its constitutional mandates for Military Aid to Civil Authority (MACA) and Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP) acted responsively in order to de-escalate the deteriorating security situation. Instructively, the military and other security agencies exercised maximum restraints against the odds of provocative and inexplicable violence that were employed against them by the pro-Biafra protesters. The military and of course the other security agencies acted professionally within the extant Rules of Engagement to successfully de-escalate the budding anarchy. It is rather inconceivable for any individual or group to have decided to inundate the general public with an anecdote of unverified narratives in order to discredit the Nigerian Army in the course of carrying out its constitutional duties despite the premeditated and unprovoked attacks in the hands of the violent pro-Biafra mob as Amnesty International is determined to do.

Thank you for your usual cooperation.

this is trash no matter what why shoot unarmed civilians nothing writing here justify the killing of unarmed protesters because if the protesters were armed like bokoharam then we can see a reason for the sporadic shooting but why shoot people with sticks and banner...

I read from different media that no one was killed in a church. Also the press release from the state government said the same. It's only on nairaland and fb I keep hearing church. I'm sure if it's true some sympathizers would have evidence to back up their claims. Please can i see a picture of those that you claimed were killed in the church or a link to an article about it. With the pictures of those killed inside the church. I mean the picture of their corpse.

Please no pun intended. I just wanna verify the claim.

1. Amnesty first said they could not substantiate any claims of death made by ipob members. This was after ipob members saturated amnesty website telling them dt d Nigerian army was killing innocent people.

2. Now amnesty is saying the military killed people, months after d protest.

It is clear some arm twisting has gone on behind the scenes. Just so the Igbos can justify victimization claims so they can secceed.

If some of u don't believe this. Then u have not been paying attention. Ipob has bn waging a propaganda war since they decided to secede. Not only is dis propaganda preached on all their websites, they go as far as writing comments on foreign govt websites, CNN, BBC websites and twitter pages. You should even see d comments on Americas council of foreign relations blogs.
Just to turn a tide against d government.

Where were Amnesty International when Thief Obasanjo was butchering thousands of innocent peaceful villages who not even making any protests in Niger Delta and Benue State?

Where were Amnesty International when the current Egyptian regime massacre hundreds of opposition Muslim Brotherhood members and imprisoned thousands of others for simply being an opposition?

Where are the videos of the incident that proves that 17 peaceful IPOB protestors where killed in cold blood? Sure these days they must have been hundreds of camera phones recording the shooting incidents, youtube should be flooded by these videos. Where are the videos?

Do not get me wrong I am a proud son of South East and the loss of any these lives is saddening especially if it could have been avoided. Nigeria should do its own internal investigation of these deaths and find out whether things could have been handled better or whether any of the security forces acted unlawfully.

However let us realise that Amnesty International like the ICC is a tool of imperialist and neo-colonialist countries to persecute African countries and leaders that refuse to blindly bow to their domination and dictates.

Because Thief Obasanjo was doing a destruction job on our economy, wealth and assets and was transferring trillions of dollars worth of our wealth over to the west, his genocides in Zaki Biam and Odi were not noticed by the West or their Amnesty International

Wake black man, wake up!!

I tried to make sense out of this public statement, but it seems empty and irrational.

I cant remember the last time I posted anything sympathetic over the death of any soldier, Most times I feel they deserve even more.

Its laughable how our leaders have always struggled to preserve the unity of this country with Gun and blood of the innocent.

Anyone with common sense will ask how sustainable this blood preserved unity will last.

I think unity should come out of willful submission and not coercion. That's the only way all stakeholders would enjoy it.
