Italy take on current European Championship holders Spain will face off in the Round of 16 on Monday evening at the Stade de France. The match is a repeat of the 2012 final which Spain won 4-0.

Italy head into the match on the back of a 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland. Robbie Brady’s 85th minute header secured a deserved win over the Azzurri. Monday’s opponents won’t read too much into the result, however.

With top spot already assured, Italy boss Antonio Conte made nine changes for the Ireland match. The likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Eder are all expected to return to the line-up to face Spain. Antonio Candreva is a doubt for the match with a hamstring strain.

Italy confirmed themselves as group winners with an emphatic 2-0 win over Belgium and a 1-0 victory over Sweden in their opening two matches.

Spain enter the Round of 16 as runners-up of Group D. Like Italy, Spain won their opening two matches before losing the third 2-1 to Croatia. Alvaro Morata opened the scoring but Nikola Kalinic equalised against the run of play on the stroke of half time.

Sergio Ramos had a penalty saved in the second half before Ivan Perisic scored an 87th-minute winner. For the third game in a row, Cesc Fabregas started in a midfield trio alongside Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta. Atletico Madrid’s Koke is rumoured to get the nod ahead of Fabregas against Italy.

Unsurprisingly, Vicente Del Bosque’s men have the highest pass completion rate at the tournament, completing 1876 of their 2023 attempted passes (93%). They also rank third for possession (61%).

While Alvaro Morata tops the scoring charts, tied on 3 goals with Gareth Bale, it’s the performances of Andres Iniesta that are getting the most praise. The 32-year-old midfield maestro has created 9 chances and completed 264 passes in three appearances.

It may not be an immediate concern but ten Italian players are one booking away from a suspension. The winner of the match will face one of Germany or Slovakia in the quarter-finals.
