In talking about Islam's lame-duck hobble between faith and reason, the word is succinct on what has happened to it since the golden era of the historical cameo faces of Islam touted by apologists like Tariq Ramadan. These also, in his words, made 'decisive contributions [to Western civilization]' as 'rationalist … thinkers.' The figures he cites include the beloved indefatigable medical pioneer, Ibn Sina (Latinized as Avicenna) and the robust, graceful-as-a-gazelle scholar, al-Ghazali (died 1111). But Islam simply hasn't kept faith with its 'universal' men in the mould of the German, Goethe, touted to be 'the last universal man.' The reason for this, it must said, is that Islam's all-powerful scholars – its engine-room – became aggressively reactionary and bereft of response-ability upon discovering patently irreconcilable differences with the existing faiths of Judaism and, especially, Christianity. For their darling religion to be tenable and to hold sway, Christianity must be shown to be false, or corrupted, and kept at bay! America's first president George Washington said, 'Knowledge in every country is the surest basis of public happiness.' Islam's founder must have had this sentiment in mind as he's quoted to have said: 'Seek knowledge – even if it takes you [to the ends of the earth].' Knowledge, however, is neither Muslim nor whatnot. The medieval Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun may as well have been outright irreligious – what with modern Islam's annoyingly obtuse disregard for any historical antecedents except its concocted own: Muslim sheikhs continue to shriek: 'Jesus was not crucified!' and Iran's ranting President, Ahmedinejad jabs shamelessly at History with his 'the Holocaust never (or is it hasn't?) happened' taunt. No wonder a Muslim colleague – a History major – could 'seek to know' from me 'what European country' Jesus came from! But we are used to all the above: anti-Pope demonstrators in predominantly Muslim Turkey held up placards holding up a medieval book – "the gospel of Barnabas" – one inane as it is a spiteful forgery, as containing the sole gospel truth! babyosisi: Babyosisi, Habibi grew up in Kano and is a scholar from Ahmadu Bello University. We know that Muslims need to be freed from all the lies of Satan. Babyosisi, I have been working and God is in control. You will be invited and the celebration will be public. Just take good care 24/7. |
