So you have not seen cases where a brilliant chap who passed the cut off mark of post utme is not given admission or given a very stupid course and a rich man's child is taken through the back door.. It is still the same thing, Though I'm not taking sides here. I am only opposing that your opinion
I have. But most times,it doesn't happen! In my school, the cut-off marks for all departments are made public so if you scored up to or above the cut-off and wasn't admitted, you then lay your complaint and it is attended to.

What The Ministry of Education is to do if they want to help students is to try and coerce universities to make their cut-offs public thereby making admission processes more transparent.

Scrapping post-UTME isn't right!

MaQuin:
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Wednesday, kicked against the Federal Government’s directive for tertiary institutions to scrap the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, for admission of candidates for the 2016/2017 academic session, saying the quality of tertiary education in the country could improve if the institutions are allowed to regulate their students admission process.

ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, said such freedom would enhance the quality of education.

Recall that at a recent joint policy meeting to decide the cut off mark for students seeking admission into the universities, the government announced the scrapping of post-unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

The Post UTME is the second stage of screening usually conducted by universities for the final selection of candidates qualified for admission for an academic session.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu had threatened to sanction any university or tertiary institution found conducting examinations under any guise to admit students.

He further directed tertiary institutions that had collected money from candidates for such purposes to immediately refund it or face appropriate sanctions.

The ASUU boss told NAN that such directive encroached on the autonomy of the institutions.

“I think government should give these institutions the chance to regulate themselves,” he said.

“They should decide for themselves, the process they dim fit to admit their students. The Senate of universities for example, should decide on the process they want to use in selecting candidates.

“We do not think it’s right for government to decide the method of screening of the candidates, indeed, we want to attain some level of sanity and quality in the system.”- QUESTION:You think its not right for government to decide the method of screening, but its right for them(Government) to pay and fund the affairs of the Institution?

The unionist added that government could only come into the process by putting in place the necessary guidelines as part of their oversight functions.

According to him, it may not also be easy for institutions that had already collected money for the conduct of the post-UTME or screening in whatever guise to refund such money.

He added that this was because such money could have been diverted to other purposes.

Ogunyemi noted that most universities were under-funded and therefore, might have used some of the money to attend to urgent needs of the institution.

“Some of the arguments raised in this entire episode is that universities or tertiary institutions were using the conduct of such examination to make money,” he said.

“But the truth is, these institutions are poorly funded. If universities for example are properly funded, will the vice-chancellors be looking for other means of making money?- QUESTION: Is he trying to justify the act of corruptions of these VCs?

“In the last seven months, university workers have been receiving incomplete salaries, that is, the disbursement of funds for payment of salaries has always been inadequate.

“When situations like this arise, the managements will not be left with any choice than to look inwards and seek means of meeting such needs.

“And one of such strategies is by conducting such examination.”
- QUESTION: So, receiving Incomplete salaries is now an avenue for EXTORTING Nigerians that are looking for admission?

Ogunyemi noted that the state universities were worst hit for many of them had yet to receive subvention in the last one year.

“Actually we in ASUU frown at extortion of any type from students or candidates but the government too should be alive to its responsibilities by providing the enabling environment that will aid teaching, leaning and research.”

well, if the ASUU feel dey want to screen students in order to know who to admit....dey shud do dat for free or get logistics from d govt buh not frm d poor students.....Did u knw postjamb started 2005, and as at den unilag did dier first postjamb exams and dey realised #92million....i wonder how much other schools made den, and how much dey are making now...
Universities have seen dz postjamb as a medium of extorting students and parents!.,....it is high time we got it ryt in dz country....why wud govt av two bodies conducting exams in d country...JAMB and TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS......
One of dem shud be scrapped....eida jamb or postjamb....in the UK, individual university
conducts it own entrance exams.....So in oda countries abroad....i wonder y ours is different in Nigeria.....if i want to go to UI, i shud walk straight to d school and obtain d form to sit for d entrance exam and not going thru a meander journey of one yeye Jamb,......
Let me even ask....wat is unified in UTME wen univs in nigeria dont av unified or uniform academic calender....

Re: ASUU kicks against FG’s scrapping of Post-UTME by sammhi(m): 8:09am On Jun 30, 2016
Actualy, it is JAMB that is supposed to be scrapped. Let each university determines how it will admit students . this is the practice world wide . wonder why Nigeria own is different .Jamb should just be a supervising institution if NUC alone cant do the job.
BUT THERE SHOULD NOT BE TWO exams for admission into the university. that is chaos

Seriously, in as much as people are rejoicing over the scrapping of post-UTME, I personally do not think it's a good omen. This is because JAMB as a body isn't a reliable one.

I've seen cases where very bright students end up scoring abysmal marks as JAMB scores and it tend to make me wonder what really happened!(It once happened to me).

So,finally, my point is,if you are able to achieve a very high JAMB score, why not prove it in post-UTME? IF ANYTHING SHOULD BE SCRAPPED,IT'S JAMB AND NOT POST-UTME.
Trash! if Universities must conduct another exam other than UTME, then there should be no fees/charges for the exams. It is so glaring to everyone that Post UTME is an avenue for schools/lecturers to extort money from poor students.

Imagine how much these this corrupt people raising with part time programmes running future of people , graduating them as part time student without NYSC letters, well, anyone success do not depend on NYSC certificate but it a document wish is relevant in Nigeria today to secure a better job in most firms, why deny student who pay more such opportunity? same lecturers, professors are the one taught these students in there various department in same University, by same lecturers, same class room, same certificate issued by same registers, the lecturer then share this fund generated from these students .

that is serious corruption going on in the university system.

Your argument is flawed...

If a bright student scores poorly in JAMB then he would not be invited to write post-UTME in the first instance.

Post-UTME is extortion pure and simple!

I wonder how scrapping off post utme will increase quality of education in Nigeria. For the past years that the so called post utme has been in existence have the institution quality of learning improved. So na jambite dey reduce our quality of education. Moreover has post utme fees stopped the institution from embarking on strike since they claimed that the money realise are been used to catered for the school need. They never talk the truth. Post utme has not met it's objectives. I drop my pen

So in effect Post-UME is conducted to generate revenue for universities while it could improve the quality of tertiary education as a side benefit ( it's funny that a university can't provide statistical facts to support that Post-UME actually has improved quality). And if Government wants to scrap the exams the should provide better funding? These Schools must improve on their resourcefulness; it's unfair to exploit students like this.

Universities can generate significant revenue by developing their R& D for profit, selling intellectual property, specialist consultation, parking & rental partnerships, etc. They need to employ a financial consultant to advise how to make the institution more viable instead of robbing students blind.

A break-down of their revenue generation should be critically assessed.

Thank you Vincent. You actually made my day..I know everyone is making a good point-those against and those in support just as there are always demerits and merits in almost every circumstance. It actually boils than on FG motive of setting up this policy- If it was set up to curb admission frauds then all universities should conduct pume and make their cut off points known publicly: I believe this reduce frauds to some extent. But if it was to mitigate burden on parents or admission seekers, then little or no money should paid for pume.Like I said in another thread in no sooner time, there will be protest:a replica of last years':many will not accept their fates. When one fails,he feels self guilt. If there's anything to scrap,Its the fluke exam called jamb not the other way round.

In the UK we have the A-Levels and in the US SAT, maybe they should scrap both and use aggregates of the O-Levels results to gain admission like it is done in Ghana.
We dont have to do copy Uk or Us. Have u ever heard of fourth admission list or Vc list in Uk or Us?

Jamb way back was useless which is why they introduced post utme. If you wrote jamb some years back u will agree with me that it was really useless cos I remember u could shade any paper type u find in the exam hall and u will still pass.

Now with the new examination system (which really didn't work out well this year) from jamb, I must say is better than what we use to have. Though there are needs for improvement. Let not forget that most universities have not upgraded to the new computer based system of examination which Jamb has done and I believe with this, examination malpractice has decline seriously.
