Oga, it's not your course of study, it's you. Course of study may help some people, but it doesn't stop anyone from achieving what he sets to achieve.

Dele Momodu studied Yoruba. He's now a successful journalist.

If you want to stay in your path, there are hundreds of successful microbiologists. The minimum is to continue studying to PhD and professorship and that's an achievement on its own. Lecturing, local and international researching.

And if you decide to try other fields, there are many bank and company EDs that studied microbiology, for example.

I actually cant believe dele study Yoruba. He is better than most of our so-called journalist that study mass comm

OP, it may interest you there are different types of Microbiology(ist) out there in our society by virtue of course of study which most people don't know either due to omission or just plain ignorance.
1. Medical microbiologist (Doctors)
2. Medical microbiologist (Medical laboratory scientist)
3. Microbiologist (SLT)
4. Microbiologist i.e both applied and industrial (Natural science holders)

In school they won't tell you this but in reality this is how it works:
The first 2 are the set you see in the hospital laboratories (Medical Microbiology lab) due to specialisation. They are allowed to carry out duties on human subjects and since life is involved they are duly licensed for what they do. Yeah you may want to add SLT to this group but in reality they are Technologist you find in Microbiology (school) laboratory not hospital. Those with SLT in hospital laboratories will be weeded out in due time. But basically you will find medical laboratory scientist with medical Microbiology major predominantly in hospital (Microbiology) laboratories than doctors.

SLT with option in Microbiology basically work in school (university) laboratory hence they are saddled with conducting practicals for students in Microbiology. All those practical you guys do in school are aided by Technologist. Mind you they are well grounded in Microbiology so they are employed to man university laboratory for students in Microbiology. Hence the name Microbiology Technologist.

The microbiologist in natural science have vast area to delve into; pharmaceutical, environmental, food, petrochemical etc etc. But most times they believe since they did medical Microbiology dey should also work in hospital laboratories well that's not how it works you guys studied General Microbiology and did medical Microbiology for 2 semesters but the 2nd studied (3-4 years) and are still studying everything medical (pathological) about Microbiology.

A holder of B.MLS or a Dr fellow (Postgraduate diploma) with specialty in medical Microbiology studied everything medical in bacteriology, mycology, immunology, parasitology, mycology, virology, molecular diagnostics etc and there are other specialty in there too that are left for others with their interest. In some certificates of B.MLS holders you see Major (Medical Microbiology / parasitology) and doctors have their fellow in Medical Microbiology / parasitology too.

Studying Microbiology isn't bad just that most narrow their minds to hospitals forgetting there are other areas yet to be explored but so many thinks it's hospital or nothing so frustration sets in.

Boss show me the way. I'm almost done with my MSc in Environmental and Public Health Microbiology and I would appreciate pointers on NGOs I can apply to.
Sent you a pm.
DatsAll1mSayin:
I have read alot of responses which are quite ridiculous and shows that people don't really know about this course.
Yes there's hope for a microbiologist in this country.

I am a graduate of Microbiology (2. 2) and I am presently in the public health sector. I have worked for international NGOs. The pay is good and the opportunities are boundless. Take Monitoring and Evaluation specialists, Public health Admin, or programme officers for instance.

I know Colleagues who work in pharmaceuticals, Hospitals, Breweries, Food Coys, Laboratories, and even research institutes to name a few.

I think the problem OP has is being stereotyped. Please open your eyes, read more, get the right contacts and enjoy your degree.

Like someone said Dele Momodu is now a journalist. There's peops with Botany and History in banks.

Get off your lazy ass OP, believe, and redefine yourself.
Re: Is There Any Hope For Microbiologist In Nigeria by Theflint1(m): 4:48pm On Jul 04, 2016
Bro go do the exam, it aint hard. Half of the questions are from English Language and the other half are introductory microbiology questions, a brush up of chapter 1-8 of Prescott or study of 200 level introductory microbiology materials would have you covered. Biochemists even ace the exam.

Good day fellow microbiogists , pls I intend doing MSc in Microbiology but I'm confused as to the University to choose. I want a university that WOULD GIVE ME ADMISSION EASILY WITHOUT WRITING ANY ENTRANCE EXAM, FAST ACADEMIC CALENDAR . I intend going for environmental and public health microbiology. Apart from UNIBEN WHICH OTHER UNIVERSITIES OFFER THIS COURSE (environmental and public health microbiology). Pls I really need your suggestions. Thanks
