About the Uhodari project:
Uhodari (Swahili for excellence), is an advocacy project developed by Fahamu and partners that seeks to solve some of the challenges faced by youth through providing tertiary-level students with opportunities and platforms for idea generation, peer learning, sharing and growing both continentally and globally.

Uhodari proposes to use proposal development competitions as a tool for students to deepen their understanding on various issues and be able to articulate their views, opinions and solutions to a multitude of challenges that are facing Africa. Through these competitions, students will be able to develop proposals and solutions to issues that directly affect them, but also the wider society in general.

What is the Uhodari Proposal Writing Competition about?
The competition seeks to engage students from Universities in Nigeria who will submit a project proposal that would seek to address a social issue that affects their communities and propose pragmatic solutions that would influence policies sub-nationally, nationally, regionally, or continentally.

Ten themes have been pre-selected that represent issues that Africa urgently needs to resolve. Students should develop their proposals based on these themes;

Leadership and governance
Religious fundamentalism and culture
.
Agriculture and food sovereignty and security.
Access to capital and starting small businesses
Environmental conservation and climate change.
Education and professional training
Citizenship and right to nationality
Role of Peace and security on development.
Migration and Africans in the Diaspora.
Use of technology as a tool for innovation and employment creation.

Eligibility criteria:
Though set to hold across 6 countries in Africa, the Nigerian leg of the competition –managed by Voice of Reason, Nigeria– is ONLY open to students in Nigerian Universities.

Deadline:
The competition shall allow the submission of proposals from 10th of June to 20th of July.

Submitting your proposal:
Kindly submit your proposal to vofr@outlook.com

Selection criteria:
The selection committee will review the proposal based on:
Word count: Each proposal should not be less than 3,000 words.
Line spacing: 1.5
Font size: 12

Structure of the proposal: problem statement, past and current interventions, the gaps in those interventions and proposed solutions.
Creativity and innovation

Selection of shortlisted students:
There will be a shortlist process where the best 15 project proposals will be selected to advance to the proposal presentation week, which will be held at the University of Calabar, Calabar. The successful candidates will be contacted for further information.

Presentation of Project Proposal:
Each proposal will be judged by a distinguished panel of experts that would range from university faculty, policy advisors and civil society representatives amongst others.

Prizes:
Prizes will include certificates and trophies, reading resources, opportunities to interact with policymakers or potential investors in order to actualize their proposals into projects, take part in intergenerational dialogues and fora for idea generation, sharing and learning and opportunities to interact with leading institutions in innovation in Africa.
In addition to the above, 5 winners selected by the panel of jurors will each win $2,000 worth of prizes, educational and travel opportunities.
