Benue Speaker urges prayers against death of officials
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi

TO forestall future occurrences, the Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terseer Tsumba, has called for prayers to stop the death of top government functionaries in the state in recent times.

Speaking while receiving the Acting Governor of the state, Stephen Lawani, who paid him a condolence visit over the death of the Clerk of the House of Assembly, Mr. Emmanuel Okaba, Tsumba said there was need for divine intervention following the death of prominent officials both in the legislative and executive arms of government.

Tsumba described the late Clerk of the House as a quintessential bureaucrat who devoted his entire working career to the development of the state House of Assembly.

"Immediately he graduated from the university, he was employed as a worker in the Benue State House of Assembly. Even during the military era, he remained an employee of the state Assembly and continued to hold fort pending the return to democracy", he said.

The Speaker added that he was saddened at the death of Okaba, who was his senior in the secondary school days and when he (Tsumba) emerged Speaker, Okaba worked hard to ensure his success.

In his remarks, Lawani regretted the passage of the late Clerk, describing the death as a loss to the entire state.

He said that he led the entire State Executive Council (SEC) to commiserate with members of the state Assembly because the members had done that when the SEC lost its members in the past.

Lawani assured the House of the state government's support in ensuring that the late Clerk was given a befitting burial.

Earlier, the House had adjourned its sitting in honour of the late Clerk.

According to Tsumba, the House would re-convene next week Thursday when it would hold a valedictory session to honour Okaba.
