Authorities of the University of Ado Ekiti have responded to the allegation that the Part Time Programmes Unit of the University in collaboration with students donated six Toyota Camry sedans to Deans of some selected faculties.

In a rejoinder signed by Bisi Falade, the Principal Assistant Registrar/Secretary, Part Time Programme of the university, the institution said that “there was no donation of any kind made by students of the university to any lecturer and that no lecturer received any gift of cars either from students or any unit of the institution.”

The true position according to Falade is that the Part Time Programme Unit of the university through its “Internally Generated Revenue (sic) decided to “assist the university by providing used cars for the department and faculties that are cognate to the part time programme”

The university spokesman added that prior to the time the “part time programme donated these vehicles, none of the departments had any official vehicle. Also the Deans of the two affected faculties did not have official vehicles. The university which ordinarily should provide vehicles for the departments and faculties had been unable to do so as a result of inadequate resources. This explains why the donation of the vehicles to the affected academic units was lauded by all and sundry”

Is the above a rejoinder or a confirmation of the initial story reproduced below? You be the judge.

It can only happen in Nigeria! According to a story published in a national newspaper on Thursday August 20, 2009, with the headline; UNAD Part time Programmes Donate Six Cars, the Part Time Programmes Unit of the University of Ado Ekiti in collaboration with students, donated six Toyota Camry sedans for Deans of some selected faculties. The Vice Chancellor attended the handover ceremony where, according to the report, he commended the gesture and vowed to “encourage” other units to emulate the Part time Unit. The report added that the students pledged to extend the bonanza to other units of the university. Where else but Nigeria?
