A CRITIQUE OF THE PROSECUTION OF FINANCIAL CRIMES IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT

It is quite usual, though unfortunate, that the average Nigerian who consumes any form of the services provided by our media- newspapers, news channels etc.-has gotten used to the embezzlement of sums of money that are too monumental to imagine. Money is randomly looted by the high and mighty, and contract sums are constantly inflated and misappropriated. Unfortunately, the negative manifestations of financial crimes stare the average Nigerian in the face every day- poverty, negligible infrastructural development, crumbling educational systems, incessant industrial strikes…the list is lengthy.

One wonders whether the news one hears and reads about on the prosecution of financial crimes is plausible by any standards. In the light of incessant monetary crimes, this research piece analyses the challenges and repercussions of the investigation of financial crimes in Nigeria; while investigating the efficacy of the legal and institutional structure constituted for the purpose of combating financial crimes.

The research methodology deployed in this work is the use of judicial authorities, text books, newspapers and magazines and the internet.
