The Federal Government on Thursday assessed the nation’s economy and returned a verdict that 2016 has so far been a difficult year for Nigeria.

It said things are expected to start picking up for the nation by next year.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma, said these while answering questions from State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the National Economic Council presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Udoma was joined at the briefing by the Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku; and his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello.

The minister said Nigeria could only be said to be in recession if it records two quarters of negative growth.

He said since the country had experienced negative growth in the first quarter, the country will be said to be in technical recession if the second quarter which is still being expected is also negative.

He said, “Recession is basically when you have two quarters of negative growth. We had a first quarter of negative growth and we are still waiting to get all the figures for the second quarter which has just ended in June.

“The National Bureau of Statistics will be giving us all the figures but if as we suspect, the second quarter is also negative, then of course technically you could say that we are in recession if those figures turned out to be so.

“But even if we are not, the situation in the economy right now is one that of course we are addressing.”

Udoma said while the Federal Government expected some of the factors that have been impacting negatively on the economy, some others were unexpected.

You see their lives? So, we, the 'ordinary' citizens should continue to starve and wait till 2017 while them and their families continue to grow and blossom and their children continue to graduate from the Universities of Harvard, Manchester and the likes?

According to kemi adeosun, Nigeria economy is technically in recession already.

50% of 2016 budget is un implementable, did I say 50%?

We also know too well that the whole of 2015 was a total waste in terms of executing capital projects, same is about to happen in 2016.

And someone is sitting down somewhere telling me the economy will turn for good in 2017?

One minister is telling farmers to pay some money so as to protect them from kidnappers (what is the Nigerian police force doing? Are they protecting a different group of nigerians only?)

FG is saying that it might not be able to pay salaries, maybe 2-3months from now.

Can these people bridge the gaps/rots incurred for a period of 2yrs in just 1yr? (it is easier to destroy than to build)

Yes bro, I blame goodluck for all these.

I blame him for conceding defeat to this trial and error president, to this senseless president.

I. Blame him for not rigging his way up to remain as presido.

I blame him for not declaring the 2015 elections inconclussive.

But what do I know? GEJ is just smarter. GEJ and his team knew naija was going into hard times, I guess that was why he willingly left.

But GEJ would have stayed back with his team, the economy is shaky all over the world.

But GEJ's team would have given us something to hold on to until things are sorted out.

They would have found ways to alleviate this suffering @least to its barest minimal.

I still blame GEJ for being selfish ( becoming the hero of democracy by conceding defeat peacefully and then leaving the helm of affairs as the best president naija ever had since democracy) and leaving us to the mercy of these blood sucking APC members.

It is not based on any solid planning or strategies.

Just sheer wishful thinking.

Does the economy pick up without any policy direction?
