•Husband beaten(was left to die), abused by his family and the community alike.

In a bid to escape painful and senseless female genital mutilation prevalent in certain communities in Nigeria , Mr .Olalowo Hammed Olalekan and his wife, Modinat have fled the shores of Nigeria for the safety of their children.
It was learnt that Modinat Olalowo, who got married to Olalowo Hammed Olalekan, ran away from her matrimonial home, with her children, when she was asked to bring her daughter for the painful and needless circumcision.

Owing to the terrible and painful experience their daughter would pass through, if subjected to such mutilation, Modinat and her husband jointly objected to such traditional requirements of their offspring and insisted that their child would not be circumcised.

According to Hammed, enormous physical, sexual and emotional abuses prevalent in the country at the moment, force many women out of their homes at mentioning of genital mutilation or circumcisions as the case may be.

Hammed, who was said to have been attacked by his kinsmen for not subjecting his daughter for the exercise said he didn ’t expect to survive the attack due to thorough beating he got when he tried to escape, saying he was abused by his family and the community alike and was left to die. He said: “I thought I had died.

I was bleeding all over my body with swollen face and cuts on my body. What I experienced from them is not what I wish anybody . If it were my wife or children, they may not have survived it. ”

Speaking further, he said: “I was on my way home, when some men began taunting me for not allowing my daughter to be circumcised, rather aided their disappearance.”

However, human rights activists have described the act as barbaric and blame it on Nigerian government for not providing adequate security to its citizens against such practices.

Interesting.

Did not know it was practiced in the West of the Country too,I taught the Yoruba's were too enlightened for this Rubbish.

I am surprised.

In the part of the Niger Delta I come from,it is expected females do this circumcision,as a prerequisite for getting married, but I think it is voluntary, and it does not apply to the women married from other cultures.

So one day I asked my mom as a young guy,why do women from our culture get circumsized?and she replied that it is done so the woman don't become promiscuous,by removing the very thing inside a woman that makes them sexually active.

This is Barbaric, but hey it is the culture of the land.

Then as regards this man?the one that claimed he was attacked. I will leave his discussion for another day, because most times, those seeking Asylum in most Western Countries bring up stories like this,so as to get papers.

And as for the picture?could be a picture of anybody that got beaten to a pulp, which just happened to be in the Newspapers, and which the man can claim to be him.

An unrecognizable face like this here,is even hard for Nigerians to decipher if it is the man,let alone White people,so this man stands a chance of getting his papers.

Never knew this crazy practice is still so rampant enough to beat a man that refused it up for.

Also heard about a particular community any woman that marries a man from there will be circumcised while in labor for her first child. Don't know if it's still practised till now. Then men wonder why some of their wives are frigid

Anything for green card.

What a cöck and büll story. I bet that man was caught and beaten for petty thieving. Nothing else.

He even looks like a thief.

And people should stop making this out to be a tribal issue. I'm not Yoruba and neither is illiteacy prevalent to any particular tribe.

Female genital mutilation is barbaric and should condemned in all quarters. That action is condemnable and should resisted by all that has the opportunity as Africa is a society where we pay little or no attention to human right.

Our forefathers practiced this in the era of ''one man many wives''so that the woman would stray own to promiscuity. They have to pass this selfish belief from generation to generation where some are ready to die for the belief as seen in the story.

How about the new era of one man one wife?........Is it really necessary? undecided

I so much love the way Nairalanders jump into conclusion without an afterthought or even sef a 'beforethought'.

The man represents the whole of what Yoruba people are all about, isnt it?

This piece of news you read with scanty details (no state of origin, location) just the name alone is enough information to generalize the whole of Yoruba land as savages, isnt it?

I can see the symptoms of inferiority complex all over you.

State of Emergency should be declared in SW Nigeria to rid it of genital mutilation experts and pedophiles.
Female genital mutilation is so common in SW Nigeria. There is need for reeducation of people on danger associated with FGM.

Na wa ooo, see how the man was beating to stupor just because he refused to circumcise his daughter. this is totally uncalled for.

It's so unfortunate that people still indulge in this barbaric practice despite several enlightenment campaigns from the government.
The disadvantages of this practice outweighs it's advantages

The main reason why they do it is to kill/suppress the female sexual urge so that she won't be wayward thus keep her Virginity for her husband. And another reason which i don't totally agree with is because of the fear that the clitoris (clit) may grow out of proportion.

The disadvantages includes; obstructed Labour, VVF, pain during sexual intercourse and inability to achieve orgasm, and a host of other emotional/physcological disorders.

Infact i can say it is, if not the major reason why most married women deny their husbands of sex because they don't enjoy it and it's always painful. And we know the number of broken homes the issue of sex has caused.

I listened to a radio program in osun state some time last year on the issue of female circumcision and how the government is trying to abolish it.
An Alfa with two wives called on the program one of his wives was circumcised and the other was not.

He was asked by the anchor of the radio program which of the wives he enjoys most. And he said it was the un-circumcised one. He said the circumcised one usually turns him down each time he wants it.

I have a friend who was circumcised after she had her first baby she said the husbands family said its a tradition in their place. Also when she had a baby girl about 6months ago the girl was also circumcised sad sad when she told me I screamed in horror. Educated individuals for that matter. From EDo state. Felt like reporting to the authorities but I'm scared myself. Never believed this was still in vogue.
