This looks like 1800's sef and they are still not naked. You think our Aso Oke is a recent invention and other textiles we use? Yoruba women have been weaving their own cloth for centuries.

No I said 1500s!

Lie lie it's not the Hausas who traded trinkets and Arabian clothes with you but still called you savages....you were a million times more advanced than the Roman Empire at its peak.

We are still in the same habitat.I double dare you to go out in the street dressed like that

Times change. Our sense of decency and what is appropriate changes too.
That still doesn't make our sense of dressing any more superior than that of those who dressed to suit their environment.

The ancient Egyptians wore much less clothing than the Vikings of Europe. Yet the Vikings were barbarians and the ancient Egyptians were civilised. The Egyptians simply wore less because their environment demanded it.

Many Africans on the hinterland were naked. So when I see African's shout about nudity I laugh my yansh off. Being more modern than the people that told you to cover up from head to toe, and it's now an African culture to be looking like a well padded and dressed masquerade. Smh.

That's a lie. Yoruba wealth came from glass beads and trinkets we traded. They have been found and dated to as early as the 9th century. Don't just pluck facts from the sky and pretend they are real. What is wrong with you. Stop killing yourself, Yoruba were never savages, instead they called us thugs cause we fought back. Not docile and agreeable. Even that was documented. That is why the Oyinbo did not give us power. But to the agreeable Hausa.

To avoid taking this to a childish display, it very important i bring to your notice the ignorant character of yours. Let me remind you that the africans has a peculiar civilization which is always shaped by their environment. You thinking that the igbos in 1920's have on civilization shows how myopic you are. The picture below is the aba women riot done by mostly igbo women and other neighbouring tribe to protest against the warrant chiefs in 1929.

I am not trying to be ethnocentric here as a yoruba man but i have never seen a primitive photo of Yorubas without full clothings. Even Fulanis do wear clothes before the colonial era. There are thousands of pictures showing igbos in half nudity in a primitive way. Go to African Magic you can still watch some igbo films where they potray their livestyle before pre-colonial era and you will see the primitive half-nudity.

Igbos nothing to be ashamed of we simply better civilized than you in those days before the white me came.

Remeber yorubas and Binis were trading with the portugese at the coast of lagos before the british landed on our shores.

Their make up suggests that this picture was taken in the 50's or 60's. That was the trendiest fashion then- note that black women didn't have specialised make up until this period. Do you have confirmation that this was taken in the 30's?

my thought exactly, that photo aint 1928.

Yoruba photography was even far more advanced than those of Oyibos then? Sophistication....

Nah real wah!
bros, yorubas have been civilized for over 6000 years. we are the ancient egyptians who built the pyramids and sphinx before the white invasion kicked us into the interiors of africa during the ptolemy era. we were once more advanced than white people. when we were in ancient egypt white people were our slaves. it is documented on the walls of egypt. so dont act surprised that our photography in 1928 was more advanced than oyinbo photography in 1930. we were superior to oyinbo but we lost our divine power . next time when you hear oduduwa you have to bow down to a superior force. you have no choice bro. even in our current fallen state we are still swagged out lolzzz

What has this got to do with me asking you to provide proof of date for the picture you posted? I gave you an example of how one can prove the date of a picture and you're going off on a tangent.

As for your comment about the Igbos being exposed to civilisation, I have two points to make:

1) Suggesting that covering up= civilisation is a very eurocentric way of thinking. Wearing clothes that suit your environment is perfectly rational- ask the ancient Egyptians.
2) If the Igbos became civilised "very late", as you put it, but they managed to 'catch up' and even supersede other Nigerians just 30 years after this picture was taken, what does that say about these Nigerians who were supposedly 'civilised' at an early age?

Yes Yorubas were always sophisticated builders of civilization! Look at all the amazing legacies they have left behind in the great architectures littered all over Africa, Yoruba mathematical theorems from centuries ago that even modern academics refer to till today. Look at the tapestry of written ancient poetry and script that are continuously studied even in the far seas of Asia. Just look!

The barrage of stories we hear of ritual human parts sacrifice in the seat of oyo empire and Abeokuta, the stories of oba cannibalism, oro "festival," the burial of human heads with dead chiefs, and all of that is just Igbos killing themselves that Yorubas have always been sophisticated and civilized. We are very jealous of how FAAAAAAR advanced you are of most races in the world.

Much more needs to be investigated about African history by Africans, and not waiting for what the west tell us. When the west was still living in caves we were using iron, laying mud bricks and forming glass. Also using terracotta to make very beautiful sculptures. I think especially in Nigeria we are sitting on a treasure of history, just too lazy to deal with it.

Actually the houses the Yoruba built back then were quite impressive. They were not mud huts but very big architecturally distinct dwellings. I will look for a picture and post here. This is not a good picture. But notice it's not a small round hut for sleeping. Not being bias because I am Yoruba but we had a better standard of living that was purely Yoruba. Before the influence of any religion. We made our own clothes, dyed the clothes into beautiful designs, smelted iron and made use of it and made glass beads. We also had the exposure to create terracotta statues that are well advanced and cannot be replicated today. Also farmed and fished.
