Following the challenge of high estimated billing, the acting Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr Anthony Akah, has asked it's consumers to use energy saving bulbs and standard appliances to complement its energy efficiency programmes.

According to Akah, who spoke at a seminar on energy efficiency in Abuja said the programme became necessary due to the serious challenge of high estimated billing and poor metering by the Distribution Companies (Discos) as well as low power generation.


We have put measures in place to accelerate metering through close monitoring of the Discos’ metering roll out plan.

Adding that NERC had initiated a programme designed to ensure energy efficiency and conservation, that the efficient utilisation of available energy was paramount.

He also said the programme include the use of standard electrical appliances, equipment and machinery in the nation’s electricity value chain.

Akah said the programme is meant to reduce the total electricity demand and to prevent Nigeria from becoming a dumping place for inefficient electrical appliances.

He added that the programme was also designed to provide consumers with useful information on how to ensure energy efficiency of household appliances.
