I bought a toyota camri from a friend of mine. Honestly, the car serves me wonderfully well. I was able to drive 300km in an empty tank.

i own a toyota carina ii I call melinda. she is more like 'kick and go' in terms of reliability. bought her toks in March 2004. she is cool. great fuel economy (710km on 65 liters), just routine service (oil and filter change) every 3000 km. ditched the A/C cos i got decieved by mechanics one too many times. changed the radiator soon after purchase. I have travelled to many parts of naija with her clocking over 150,000 on the odometer. the only major problem i had was in late 2007. made a silly mistake of filling up the radiator overflow plastic bottle. barely 100km into a journey the engine overheated. burnt the gasket and broke a piston. mechanics in a roadside village were able to fix her with less than 7k. no problems since then. have occasional shocks and shaft problems. i think its cos i get sold fakes. other than that, its the usual; brake pads, hand brake cable cuts, changed the injector nozzles, fuel pump (did majic to my accelaration) and regular maintenance. she will have to go later this year cos i need to upgrade my status. i will miss her. i can only hope her replacement, a toyota camry 2004 i plan to call 'Hugo', will be as kind to me.

I noticed that most people that are not complaining about their cars either don't drive it everyday or don't live in Lagos. My Honda ivtec V6 is a yr plus and I literally drive it every other day(go from Festac to Apapa). Ordinarily the car is marvelous in every way but the suspension can't take it any more. No mechanic has been able to fix it even after spending close to 200k. Honda place in Apapa won't admit
American spec cars(imagine!) though some1 told me today that they've started taking American specs.
Apart from carelessness, any car can last till when ever but if you feel you have a super strong 'Hancock' car, test it on Federal roads. Na body go tell you!

guys, lets not deceive one another, there is nothing like a brand new car.
just pray to God to prosper u then u will know the feeling.
Re: How's Your Tokunbo Behaving? by pannyman(m): 2:48pm On Oct 12, 2009
@anshi, of course no reasonable person who can conveniently afford a brand new car would opt for a used one. anybody who buys a used car is taking a risk, but what is life without risks anyway?
Re: How's Your Tokunbo Behaving? by VIPICO(m): 4:25pm On Oct 12, 2009
Guys, my budget is 500k. Pls who can help me here get a clean toks, preferably a Toyota? Drop number, I will call u
Re: How's Your Tokunbo Behaving? by knotty(m): 4:55pm On Oct 12, 2009
but it all depends on what you want in car that will make you choose betwen a brand new car and a used one and how much you have.
for me with 2.5m budget, i would rather buy a toks of that amount than buy a brand new car of the same amount.

Well, i bought my Hyundai lantra 93 model last year July, ever since then, till last month it has been in a perfect condition, until i the timing belt cut on motion which affected the engine. The car was fixed back and the engine was ringed, but am having problem with the smoke. early moring starting, you would see the water dropping from the exhaust pipe but later after driving the smokes comes up.Was tired of this and had to go buy new engine, since then it been ok.
Re: How's Your Tokunbo Behaving? by debosona(m): 7:33pm On Aug 11, 2010
Anyday, anytime, u cant compare a brand new car with a toks. There's dis assurance dat ur car just cant break down or develop a fault. Honestly, u cant trade dat peace of mind with anything else. I used a Mazda 626 toks for like 2 years before buying a Brand New Nissan Sunny 2009 Model and d difference is so clear. I just bade farewell 2 dem mechanics, dey really fed fat on me then. But now I have 2 sell d ride cos Im relocating. I have used it for 8 months and d mileage is 12000km, it's still far better than any Toks u can get. In case any1 will like 2 hav it. U can reach me on 08056459046(text) or send a mail 2 me at debosona22000@yahoo.com. Check this link for the pics of d car https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-492658.0.html. Asking price is 1.7 m. Its a rare offer for everyone.
Re: How's Your Tokunbo Behaving? by kuntash: 11:32am On Aug 12, 2010
@ Obeledu, I am sure you meant 37k km or miles , cos by ur calculation its like the car has been doing 260km daily since 2006.

This is a nice thread, different from the usual buy! -buy! - buy!,

Lots of people who need car for necessity have been rescued by tokunbo cars- , which are very reliable when you select a good one. reliable in the sense that, 95% of naija users disregard what the advanced countries see as risk or an offense in using a car- e.g, a faulty airbag, ABS, or leaking radiator etc might make an oyinbo sell off his 2009 car, , but we see these things as normal, for example, my car just recently started displaying air bag warning sign, and the ABS light is on after I changed my shock, but I still use the car with no hope of selling now, or alternatively disabling the ABS- in fact the car performs better than how it was as toks 2yrs ago.

New cars are good, but have u wondered why a naija used 2004 KIA Rio or cerato would sell for less than 500k where as, 1997-99 Camry same naija used would be nothing less than 600k or 700k,

buyers aren't foolish, , a tokunbo Benz with 250,000km can still run more than that distance in its lifetime here in naija,
