Back in the “dark ages” before the mobile ‘phone, even further back from the all singing, all dancing smartphone, if a man wanted to contact “a lady of the night” he had the option of visiting well known areas where prostitutes may hang around waiting for trade, or look in the classified advertisements’ for “escorts”, as they were known.

In the same way that we shop for most things today, searching for a prostitute has changed since the birth of the World Wide Web, now most consumers can purchase anything they want with a few clicks of a mouse. The sale of sex has moved with the times and now pimps are no longer using methods that may have worked years ago, but are now using underground websites, social media and mobile apps to promote their business.

The police in this country have never considered prostitution as a major crime, even though it has been illegal, but now with the shift to the anonymity that new technology and websites, they are having to monitor these sites, as it has been well known that prostitution and drug addiction can and often do go hand in hand. Also managing and advertising and taking a “cut” from the services of sex workers, is an offence, but the possible income can be huge, with many pimps in receipt of tens of thousands a pounds a year.

Michigan State University and Loyola University Chicago have been conducting a study and from interviews with 71 pimps that were involved, all used the same method to recruit their clientele, through ads placed on Backpage. This is s a classified advertising website launched in 2004. It offers classified listings including automotive, jobs listings, real estate and services.

Backpage has a section for adult postings, although it prohibits illegal services including prostitution, these are there for all to see.
Moving with the time and keeping up with smartphone technology, the pimps even have mobile apps now, so when you’re in a city, and require services of a prostitute, simply type in the address where you are and the app will tell you where to find one or more of them.

The hard pressed police service has limited resources and law enforcement can only focus so much on attacking prostitution, but they do target the most egregious cases of exploitation first, such as those involving sex trafficking and minors.

We can see that the technology they are using to market the sale of sex is pretty phenomenal, the “oldest profession” in the world has certainly moved with the times.
