Do We Need Another International Airport In Lagos ? by ehie007(m): 5:50pm On Oct 09, 2009
I dont see the use of another  international airport in Lagos that fashola wants to build for the lekki free trade zone,

Why have two international airport, the best idea would be for him to link the current international airport to the free trade zone by a very high class automated sophisticated  rail way transport system and water transport system,

that will be beeter and more meaningful than a new airport,

MM International Airport is old and somewhat outdated. Many international flights circle the air for minutes before landing because of the airport's limited capacity.  A modern international airport on the peninsular is a welcomed development.

we need another airport in Lagos to cater for domestic & international flights,

It should be situated in the Lekki FTZ as planned
I propose the airport is built & operated by the private sector

Benefits off the top of my head are

1. It would ease the burden on existing infrastructure (MMA and transport network from the Island), traffic on d way to the airport

2. It would be closer to the Central Business District, a proposed commercial centre thereby time wasted from non-profit associated activities can be reduced

3. By proposing for the Private sector to Build Own Operate & Transfer, Government purses are not affected and we can be sure of World Class facilities

4. It would create thousands of jobs for all Labour skills set i.e (skilled, semi-skilled and non-skilled i.e agbero, lol)

5. It might benefit the economy if more airlines fly into Lagos or existing airlines increase their flight frquency

6. It might even give Government the opportunity to actuallu put MMA through a moajor refurbisment scheme and at least,   have stable power supply with adequate temperature

This are the benefits i can list off the off top of me Ol; head, if it was given the job to sell this project , then i would get you about 12 reasons why gidi needs  this ASAP,

It is a good project but pls we just need TRAIN. Train is good.

Train help to reduce accident in the community.
Train help to make your journey faster.
Train help to reduce hold up popularly known as go slow
infact think of so many advantage

Also the FG should help link TRAIN accross the states, i just hate that car accident happening pls

I do support a new international airport, but not at lekki, MMA is too small, they could build a new terminal next it the old one or a new run way but lekki naa!!!

The reason is because of the FG's undue political influence,nd now that the FG and its cohort has decided to sell of every airport in lagos to bi-courtney, it would be unnecessary to use that airport.

Of course, as big as Nigeria is there should be international Airport in most states. Obviously, there should be one each in Imo, Abia and Ibadan at least.  However, there should not be another one in Lagos, period.  Lagos, has benefited alot over more than a Century still looks WOWO and undeveloped, it's time for other AREAS as everything in Nigeria is not centred in LAGOS only.

Who says you can't build another international airport in Lagos while also building an airport in Imo? Imo state governor can use his state allocation or raise revenue for the project instead of embezzling all the money.
Re: Do We Need Another International Airport In Lagos ? by OvieE: 12:04am On Oct 12, 2009
There is no need to build another airport. People hardly visit Nigeria except Nigerians that live in abroad. Nigeria has close to 170 million and Lagos airport, it hardly have 4 million a year. What is it the point of new airport when foreign plane hardly come to Nigeria or they come and they do not stay more than 3 or 4 hours and just one plane from other country is pathetic. Use that money to develop a better living for those that live the country. New airport will not give food to common man, children and woman on the street food.

From the way you sound you haven't been to Nigeria in a while. I don't know what you are talking about when you say people hardly visit Nigerians except Nigerians. Among other people, a lot of Chinese, Lebanese, Americans, foreign expatriates visit Nigeria. And even if it is only Nigerians who visit Nigeria, isn't whole essence of development is to attract non-traditional visitors to your country. You have to try to make a change. Murtala Muhammed Airport is way below international standard and is archaic. If they don't develop the country, you will complain; now that they want to build a new airport you are still complaining. Airport, like they say, is the gateway to your country.

The same applies to Lagos state governor too.  With his own Revenue Allocation he can modernise the one that is there right now or, create a new International Airport alongside Murtala Muhammed, instead of syphoning some of these revenues in his several back pockets whilst waiting for the same Fed Govt to do it, when other states had none. That way, Fed Govt Resources would be equally and rightly distributed among states and thus, we can appropriately answer 'One Nigeria' for real.

Sorry theblessed, not sure you follow the thread from the begginning. The new airport is to be built by Lagos state goverment. Lagos state cannot do anything about MMA because MMA belong to the federal govt. And Lagos state is not asking the federal govt to contribute to the new airport, as someone said eairlier, it is Lagos state public-private innitiative project.

If the same applies to Lagos, why are you concerned about Lagos's airport project? Why don't you focus on Imo? What is all these jealousy with Lagos? And who says he intends on using Fed. Govt. resources? You and I know that you cannot depend on the federal government to realize the completion of any project. Fashola brokered a concession agreement to fund the project, which parallels the agreement that was used to construct the new local airport. Also if Gov. Fashola was siphoning all the money as you proclaim, he won't have had sufficient resources to effectuate all the projects he has done thus far. Imo state is its own sovereign and can embark on its own prerogatives if it chooses to.
Re: Do We Need Another International Airport In Lagos ? by OAM4J: 1:29am On Oct 12, 2009
The new airport is not just to support the current one; it is to support the lekki free trade zone. If the vision of the free trade zone is realized, a new airport is a MUST for the free trade zone. The vision is to create a “Small Dubai” in Lagos

Two airports for Lagos are not too much. London has two world major airports. I know Lagos is not in the level of London yet; hopefully Lagos will get there, but now is the time to plan for the future. Thank God for the thinking/working Governor of Lagos.

HA HA HA! "As big as Nigeria is??" , Do you know that Nigeria is about the size of the State of Texas and you think there should be an International airport in each state (hehn). They cant even maintain one International airport
Re: Do We Need Another International Airport In Lagos ? by Ikengawo: 2:18am On Oct 12, 2009
I think the new airport will be a brilliant idea if that doesn't mean neglecting the other one.

with the free trade zone, traffic into lagos is going to explode into a scale seldom seen and mut. muhammed is already overcrowded, expecially in december.

two airports will increase trade for lagos while at the same time decreasing congestion and cost of travel.
Re: Do We Need Another International Airport In Lagos ? by proproman(m): 2:24am On Oct 12, 2009
@theblessed, you are wide off the mark. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the FG. The FG will not sponsor it. If the Governor of Imo thinks his state needs an international airport, it's up to him to seek funding and not to wait for the federal government.

@OviE, Why must everything government does be viewed in terms of common man and food? Do you know the merits of a new int. airport, how many jobs it would create, how it could boost economic activity (esp. in relation to the planned Lekki free trade zone)? How long will the money feed these so called hungry people? If the government starts feeding them, they will become lazy and complacent. The money will eventually run out and what happens then? This is a good thing and it shows that Governor Fashola has a good head on his shoulders.

In size, yes Texas is slightly smaller than Nigeria but with 30m people while Lagos alone has 17m. The rate of air traffic to Lagos justifies having another airport like similar world cities who have at least two,one each at opposite axis. It could even assist both security and traffic issues since those living closer to those ends would have choice of taken flight to and from airport closer to their abode.
