Bro, you don't know Kaduna Nzeogwu. He was also a northerner technically. Thats why he was buried in the north despite killing 'Sardauna'. He was in total control of the north and Ojukwu was in Kano, they would have fought Ironsi to standstill.
I don't agree with you. Yes, Nzeogwu's links with the north is a notorious fact. But if it came down to it, he killed the Sardauna. He was knaive to think he could get away with that and the Army would line up behind him and his coup.

Yes. It is true that Ironsi negotiated to halt Nzeogwu's march to Lagos. That's why he could not execute them. But you underestimate Nzeogwu. He had total control of the North. That guy is super, do your research.
No, you overestimate him. Ironsi simply didn't want further bloodshed. That was his mistake - he thought he could stop bloodshed by letting people get away with murder. But Nzeogwu would not have won even if he had succeeded in raising an army in the north - which he could NOT have done.

Fajuyi was not going to be killed but his insistence that he wont allow his c-in-c to be taken away in his presence made Danjuma took both of them away and killed them. That was undivided loyalty and heroism on the part of Francis Adekunle Fajuyi.
You are correct

They dragged them to the present day Lalupon on the outskirts of Ibadan.Sadly enough the 504 and Landrover defender jeep used to convey them is rotting away at the 2division of the Nigerian army Odogbo in Ibadan instead of the national museum!
It might also interest you that most soldiers do not even know the story of these vehicles in front of the soldiers block there.

It was the action of Ironsi and other reactionists like Ojukwu who benefitted from the coup of the revolutionists (Ademoyega, Nzeogwu, Ifeanjuna, Onwuategu, Okafor and co) that made Nigerians term the First coup a tribal coup. Those guys planned everything, in fact they ensured there were no civilian casualties, Most of the politicians and officers killed were those who resisted arrest and later when they had to flee, they had to kill others as most of those Officers arrested are highly skilled and could take advantage of the situation.
The coup was largely celebrated as at then cos the country especially the western region was in tension. It was the tribalism exhibited by Ironsi that made people start reading tribalism in the coup.

To show they had a different outlook to Ojukwu, despite serving under the biafran army which granted them pardon, Nzeogwu was not given a command, Ifeanjuna was killed by Ojukwu, Ademoyega was released but wasn't supported in his bid to capture the mid western region and proceed to the western region, Ojukwu was only interested in the Eastern region, He was subsequently returned to prison after less than 2 months by Ojukwu.

Please you all should correct the wrong impression.
prime minister and all the regional premiers as well as other top government people including chief of defense Ironsi, were to be arrested. Those killed(Sardauna and Akintola resisted arrest by fighting back, Others like okoti eboh, Tafawa were killed after Ironsi had regained the command of troops by ).

wow! You read much about the coup. I learnt that Akintola even engaged them with rifle and Sardauna's guards did same. Sardauna's fence was brought down by Nseogwu himself with a Carl Gustav gun and he sustained injuries in the process.

He has more chances of winning than Ojukwu did, yet Ojukwu engaged. Ure grossly underestimating Nzeogwu.

somehow i thank God Nigeria is suffering under this jihadist government so that their brains can be reformatted. Nigerians are so so myopic. exaggerating ironsi's mistakes won't conceal the hate and envy you lots have had for sincere and honest men like ironsi and fajuyi.

ironsi's only crime was not executing the couppplotters immediately and also, that he was IGBO.

anybody saying otherwise is just a zombie.
but why didd he spare the coupplotters?i wnt to knw pls i never mean any harm

Ojukwu could raise an army because Easterners were filled with anger over the pogroms and felt the way to sort that was to establish their homeland as an independent country - they had a cause. Let's say you people are right that Nzeogwu was the Jack Bauer of the desert. Explain how he could have raised an army in the north.

I like the fact u used the word claimed.
Nzeogwu died on one of his raids on the Federal troops when Ojukwu didn't give such a man a troop to lead.
It was Ifeanjuwa and Brigadier Banjo that were killed by Ojukwu on allegations of those claims.

Even if the allegations were true, was it not better Ojukwu was killed and they hand over to the federal troops rather than the thousands of lives wasted before Ojukwu fled and hand over.

It only shows who amongst them was tribal and who was a more tactical soldier.

My bad, Nzeogwu wasn't accused of treason by ojukwu. It was just ifeajuna and banjo.

You think ojukwu would have let those folks walk scotfree after they were accused of making contracts with the enemy and, also planning a coup? Remember, Biafra was a young state and at that moment was fighting a war.

The war wasn't going to end at its early stage cos there were no reason for that. In 1970, civilian leaders and military leaders from the east called ojukwu and gave reasons why the war end should, ojukwu went by that, and the war ended.

Banjo and ifeajuna would have gone through due processes if they really wanted the war to end, not making contacts with the enemy and planing a coup - that's treason.

How can you call a man who commanded the entire UN peacekeeping force in Congo a coward. What do you call ogundipe then?

Yes, he was the only military officer who went to Congo and other peace keeping missions
He was the only officer who sat in a big office in Congo and ordered men to battles and operations for which he won medals
He was the only officer who claimed victories for things foot soldiers did while he wore a big rank with siren blowing everywhere he went.

When it came to actually showing blatant bravery what did he do?
No other person in that era was directly more responsible than the head of state Ironsi who by his culpability, ineffectiveness and cowardice led to the events which caused the Nigerian civil war that claimed millions of lives among his own people and other Nigerians.

Some of the military officers who died and their families are well known to me till this day, so please for their sake do not insult our intelligence with your rubbish defense of Ironsi.

Ironsi knew it himself, he was a desk-clerk head of state, a spineless minion and useless military officer!

He commanded the entire UN peacekeeping forces in Congo. As a commadant, he bore the brunt when his forces failed, so it's logical that he's praised when his forces succeed.

Gowon outrightly caused the civil war not Ironsi. Gowon didn't stay by the aburi accord.

he didn't spare the coup plotters, he jailed them while they awaited trial proceedings. some sections of the country like the press media and formidable student unions at the time actually hailed them as revolutionists, so it was a tricky situation.

what the northerners wanted was a speedy execution. Ironsi disagreed. he promoted northern military officers to envying heights and even had some as his confidant.

They walked in, picked Ironsi, drove him away and flogged him to death. Is that how a head of state should be overthrown, it shows how weak the structure was under him, he was just having a swell time as head of state, he doesn't even know what to do. If he wasn't listening to Ojukwu, then who was he listening to? Ojukwu was his right hand man.
That was the same way Ojukwu didn't prepare for the civil war before starting and was using civilians as a wall, till he eventually ran away cowardly.

"Ojukwu ran away cowardly". After fighting for 3years, you call him a coward. A coward doesn't fight and you are a bastard.

maybe you were there in Congo where he was "desk clerking". he was also "desk clerking" when he was appointed queen Elizabeth's equerry. he was a "desk clerk" when he fought bravely in world war 2. he was a "desk clerk" went he was appointed sir MacPherson ADC... he was a "desk clerk" when he aborted the coup in Lagos.

That's the issue with our history, we are too emotionally invested that we relegate our rational minds to the background. Nzeogwu if he succeeded would have to rule for a while, hat if he decided to become a despot, what if his other guys planned against him, or if other elements in the military also went up against them. How would he have installed awolowo as Prime Minister without an election. They would be committing the same mistakes they accused the politicians if they installed Awolowo without a fair electoral process
